I'm pretty sure we had to include Bradshaw's salary in our cap after he retired, it seems to be a grey area. But I understand the reasoning for the AFL wanting to make us include all of Buddy's contract.

Exactly. I always thought we had to pay him for 9 years. Just keep him on the playing list but as a coach

That's what I thought to. As RW said, we had to pay out Bradshaw so why are there different rules for some but not for others?

In Buddy's case he was a restricted free agent which meant the Hawks had the right to match any deal we offered. If we didn't have to include the entire contract in our cap, it would have been far too easy for us to offer him a contract that the Hawks couldn't match.

But yes, the rules certainly haven't been applied consistently.
