You guys need to get away from the commercial brews as they are a slight improvement on cats piss, and try some craft brews.

McLaren Vale make a good wine, but also make a great beer.

Matilda Bay, Little Creatures etc.

I do like my Ales though, so personal choice, but there are far better beers available that are not from CUB or Lion Nathan.

That's a fairly controversial view.

Could you give some examples to illustrate?

Coonawara are known more for their cabernet.
Clare make great Riesling.
Adelaide hills sav blanc with cooler climate.

It's not to say that other wine regions can't also make good wines of this variety, but there is absolutely no doubt some regions are more suited to particular varieties due to their conditions.

8 French
6 Australian - 2 south Australian
5 South African
4 Spanish

California is not a leading wine region anymore.

I work in a beverage industry (non alcoholic), I love blind tasting days because it finds out who is full of it [emoji106].

I worked at a winery for around 5 years and was lucky enough to have drinks every Friday in the underground cellar, expensive wine is just as hit and miss as the cheaper reds (according to my palate anyway)

Over the festive season I have been drinking Three Pillars The Gourmet Cab Sav, for no reason other than the 3 cartons of pale they chucked in when I bought a dozen.
It's a good drop and not one visitor has complained or left sober.

It's important not to judge something solely because it attracts attention seekers. I think we all fall into the trap of making those sorts of judgements though, to a degree.

Being affluent with nice taste and high expectations on things you buy isn't a bad quality in a person.

What makes them the awards, and what relationship or conclusions are you trying to draw in comparison against a private tasting of the finest wines in the world, held by the most eminent experts of the day? something that has been repeated many times since with consistent results.

Also as far as I was aware the very best wines don't enter things like the decanter awards.

i guess I'm just wondering what experience you're drawing on to make these sweeping comments? Given how expensive Californian is, and how little is available in Adelaide, I wouldn't have imagined someone who prides himself on finding bargains in the $15 range, and never above $40, would have much experience in this field where the prices of the best stuff is many multiples of that.

Could be wrong, but wouldn't mind hearing of your first hand experiences

Cheers, I've had Rockfords Alacante way back, if you're looking for a cheaper version, try Bella Estate, $12 and it's pretty good

Used to love Alicante way back when. Had it again a few years ago after a fair gap and found it akin to cordial. I guess tastes develop and we look for the deeper chilled reds. Of course, how I use deep is probably incorrect in wine terminology.
