Melbourne were already rock bottom, if the AFL punished them they would have folded. The AFL did try to fine them $500k but they couldn't afford to pay it so the AFL gave them money.

Melbourne should have folded and gone to Tasmania. More Vlad-F-L centricity.

The correct version is that Melbourne were fined. They then defaulted on the payments, so the AFL loaned them money which they don't have to pay back.

Western Bulldogs is the team for me that could be extinct within 20 years, their demographic appeals to the suburb of Footscray in Melbourne and as their supporter base gets older if it fails to ensure the next young generation of children follow the Club that could be the end.

Children are fickle, in Adelaide, Port is the cool team to follow at the moment.

I agree but the VFL centric AFL will never let a founding club leave Melbourne.

Correct. I think the Saints or Dogs are vulnerable same with the Roos.

The sooner they move to NT or TAS the better.

Any chance in our lifetime of a third Club in Adelaide???? 50 years ?? Or is it impossible given the headstart of the Crows and Power.

I don't think SA needs a third team, the population of SA has mostly plateaued while other parts of Aus are booming so I don't see it happening in the next 100 years. I think QLD(northern) or WA will get a third team before SA. There are only 500k people in Tas and they are already split North/South, a lot of people from the south won't support the team if it is based in the north and vice versa so a full time Tas team is probably unlikely. I think if GWS and Gold Coast become financially viable without AFL assistance, the AFL will look to create an NZ team, knowing they will probably need to fully fund it for 20 years.

Maybe not in our lifetime but a third team from SA may happen. Its not beyond the realms of possibility where a strong SANFL club may seek a third license.

Australia's population is predicted to grow to 42 million, so we will have the population to sustain an extra team in WA, SA and QLD, however I suspect that this would need to be at the expense of the folding or relocation of the poorer Melbourne clubs.

Whether this becomes a reality remains to be seen. A lot depends also if the Victorian Clubs relocate which will assist in the development of the game in the NT, ACT and TAS. I do appreciate that TAS are split, but I am confident a team from there will be well supported. The TAS govt only about 5 years ago or so, placed an audacious bid to get an AFL license.

If the Saints, WB and NM had to relocate it would be for the betterment of a truly national competition.

NZ is interesting. I would love for us to have a team from there. I agree that support would need to be sustained for a long time otherwise they would literally just perish. The AFL would have to amend the rules of the draft, because I cannot imagine a player wanting to leave the country albeit to NZ to play AFL. That is just too harsh and unfair. I presume, a huge salary cap, an academy and local talent to all be established. This is just a pipe dream I find it hard to see NZ ever being a part of the AFL, but who knows.

Im sure when the VFL tried to establish a national competition that that too was laughed and ridiculed....initially.

If they are willing to give clubs in NSW a 10% bonus on the salary cap I don't see why they wouldn't do something similar for a NZ based club.

From the AFL's perspective, the fact that it would be supported isn't their issue, the people in Tas are already AFL fans, they are already watching it on TV so a Tas team wouldn't increase the AFL's audience, it would just take supporters from other clubs away to the new side. Which is why they went to GWS and GC, nearly every fan they generate is a new fan to the AFL, increasing their TV ratings and the value of their next TV rights deal. The same is true for SA and WA, any new teams won't increase their ratings and bring new supporters to the AFL.

Absolutely a disgraceful decision, it was the MFC that should have been punished either that or both, but not just Bailey. He was taking orders from above and was honest about what had happened.
It's one of those things that's so sad that it's almost funny, the AFL wanted to punish Melbourne but just couldn't find any way to do it without destroying the club. They couldn't take draft picks away from them because God knows how long it would to take them to recover and they couldn't fine them because they were already broke. They couldn't even say why they needed to punish them because Demetriou had gone and opened his big mouth earlier stating that 'tanking' didn't exist in the AFL.

Pretty sure that the contrived Melbourne not-punishment was done because anything more or specific would have affected the Melbourne pokie licence as well. Which really would have killed the little bit of profit they do actually make.

He's on 1.2 mil for 3 years
Not massive dough, but for his output? Good I reckon seeing he won't be playing for another club after this expires.

The standing down of Vlad handing over to Gill has been interesting.

I bet Vlad thought that the penalties handed to Essendon, in missing Finals and a fine were enough to sweep this saga under the rug.

Agree with all you say here. Plenty of clubs tanked and yet only one coach has been penalised for it. I wonder if Bailey's link to us and Vlad's hatred of our club (We didnt co-operate in Tipetgate, yet Essendon have according to Vlad) meant penalising Bailey was also penalising us, and Vlad enjoyed that. Bear in mind that Melbourne were found not have tanked, just Dean Bailey.
RE the melbourne not tanking debacle, I think what happened there is that the AFL knew there was no point penalising melbourne as theyd have to bail them out any way and it may even have lead to the club folding. We however would easily survive half a year without a coach, so they could be seen to be doing something, without hurting a team that was pretty much ****ed anyway.

If they can't hit one way, they hit another. Face saved.

That may have cost Sando his job, though!

well obviously, but how little ****ing integrity could this competition have?

I guess we'll find out in the wash-up of this Essendon fiasco

Didnt the AFL hire him to be the coach of the AFL NAB Academy? Maybe feeling guilty?
The AFL feeling guilty for imposing their rules? Doubt it.
