This would finally relegate the SANFL to the minnow competition they've been running away from being for 20 years.
Would it?

I'm not sure an increased interest in how their better players are performing is a bad thing for them.

Realistically it would only ever be 0-2 players taken across the whole competition anyway.

I think teams would use it strategically to look at players to see how they work at AFL level for ~6 months as a temporary mature age rookie. If a player burns up the SANFL for the first half of the season, they might get a look in with one of the 16 AFL clubs which they wouldn't get through the draft. It would open up avenues previously closed for players who missed out due to being 18 and still mentally young and horrible decision makers.

What a farce this Essendon bullshit is. Is this putting out a team of non-Essendon players in the NAB still about hiding the identities of Essendon's dopers?

Or has the AFL come to its senses and decreed that non-dopers must play and tough t***ies to the dopers among them?

Dustin Martin signed on for another 2 years at Richmond
Speaking of horrible decision makers...

Nobody else wants him at the price he thinks he is worth. Richmond is pretty much his only chance.

That may have been the case after 2013.

Not after 2014. Make no mistake - Martin got some serious coin on his extension and rightly so. He was contracted through the end of 2015. Scary to think that at just 23 he has played 108 games out of a possible 112. The guy is an absolute gun and the way people have been hamming up his 'issues' is just ludicrous.

I think it will be will be interesting, and slightly amusing, watching one spud after another running around wearing the infracted sash !!

Probably on a par with Luke Breust at being able to shake his hip and evade a tackle. Solid lad like wines and stays on the park. Gone up to around 600k by reports.

Yes, the Essendon song this year will be the Benny Hill theme... delicious.

Good old Essendon making some more great decisions drafting McKernan in draft now picking up Petrenko .
Hey Hird we have a few more ex players might be interested in --- Angwin -- Meeson - Kite -- Jacky -- Fergus Watt etc.etc.
Although this has dragged on forever I just wonder if they had done sensible thing and cut free Hird if this would be still dragging on.

Must be a weird position for Petrenko to be in. He's been cut, not re-hired, and is in the process of moving on with his life, then ends up being asked to suit up for Essendon for a couple of nothing matches with no contract at the end of it.

Wonder if he's hoping to catch the eye of a few recruiters with what is probably his final chance at the top level?

No question about that I'd say.

Any luck he may even eek out half or a whole season.

It's a lifeline for any of these guys

Yeah we'll swap them for draft picks

My concern is that all these guys have been ripped out of their comfort zones by being delisted and stared into the face of their football mortality. They will know this is an extraordinary last chance. Motivation will be through the roof.

I'd be very surprised if they ended up being the worse team in the comp if these guys end up playing all year.

That is true, but not having played and trained together, along with trying to adapt with Hird's game plan, makes things a lot harder. See ball, get ball, kick ball doesn't quite cut it at AFL level !!

More like Harvey's game plan I think. Hird has been taking breaks from pre-season to travel OS for his 'business interests' at various times.

And See Ball, Get Ball and Kick Ball seems to have worked for Patty pretty well so far ;)

No harm in having an average footballer in a group alongside Maric, Cotch, Lids, and Martin. Once again its funny how shit Richmond are and how strong our list is - yet they have beaten us 4 out of the last 5 times and made the finals the last two years. You just cannot make up the one eyed crap that is on this board.

Go back through the thread and have a look at Vickery and Jenkins ACTUAL production over the past two years before you claim how much better our forward line is to Richmonds. I think Tex is a better forward than Riewoldt, but Vickery and Jenkins are pretty similar.

The one area we have a massive advantage in our forwardline is with Eddie Betts being a premier small forward in the competition.

Richmond though have a big advantage in that their premier midfielders kick goals. Their top 4 mids including the average Edwards (who kicked 22 goals last year) combined for 87 goals. Our top 4 midfielders - Danger, Sloane, Thompson, Douglas kicked a massive 44 goals. Huge advantage to the tigs there.

Yeah that's true to an extent. But when you're listing off Richmonds elite midfielders and players that win games, I would have shane edwards nowhere near that group. Very surprised to see that he's ranked elite by CD, that's a huge shock tbh. I've seen him play a lot over the years and don't think he's anything special. There are still a few ahead of him.

Fair enough RE Vickery, Id much rather by having Jenkins though. A late comer to AFL and someone that is yet to really get a full pre season in. If I were an opposition coach, I would be 10x more worried about trying to contain Jenkins than Tyrone. He just kicked 40 this season and I think that speaks for itself regarding these two.

Richmonds midfielders kick a lot of goals because apart from Riewoldt, they have no one else that will. Shut him down and Richmonds goal source relies so heavily on their premier midfielders. Why do you think deledio and Martin has now been moved forward, even edwards too, also that cotchin goes to FF for large portions of games. They HAVE to kick goals or else no one else will.

No doubt that's a credit to both their coach and players for being able to execute a gameplan tailored to their list. I don't personally think that that makes their midfield any better than ours. We have so much firepower up froward that our main role is to provide ample opportunities for them. I don't believe that makes their midfield better than ours. I'd take our midfield over theirs tbh.

Yeah they've also made the 8 twice in the past 2 years where we haven't, but I think that is more so due to better teams below them not performing. Thats a big call when they did finish 5th, but again I think there were many better teams below them. I don't see them making the 8 this year. Their list as a whole just doesn't seem good enough to me and I think there are 2-3 teams lining up to take their spot, including us.
