Mitchell to West Coast is possibly one of the most unusual trade transactions that I can remember happening. Leaving his native state of Victoria, a Box Hill recruit, Hawthorn royalty, all on the curtains close of his career. It would be like us having traded Tredrea to another state at the end of 2009 for a fourth round draft pick, just inconceivable really.

It speaks volumes of where our club's at compared to Hawthorn at the moment. Clarkson is prepared to be ruthless with his playing list, but he'd no doubt command utmost respect amongst everybody at the club, with everyone fully aware that success comes at a cost. You dig in deep, sacrifice pleasure, uphold the standards of the club, and eventually you have the rest of your post-career life to relish in the success of what you accomplished. A joint, unspoken sacrifice must almost exist between him and the playing group, Clarko seems to view his players as co-workers first and foremost, with friendship as an added bonus. It would almost be a case of if you fail to uphold the standards of the club, then you'll be getting the arse very, very quickly, and not rewarding it like we've done.

It's like Hawthorn counteract mediocrity as soon as it even starts to show up and set in. Post-2014 we have embraced complacency, wrote it down on a piece of paper, and nailed it to the front entrance at Alberton Oval and put it in every locker for every player to see.

It's sad, because hearing stories from our ex-greats like Fiacchi, Ginivear and Ebert, our club used to be a pillar of sustained success, everybody had high expectations of each other, demanded success from each other, and the reward was unparalled success and premierships. I get goosebumps thinking about the 1994 GF or Gav's goal in the 2004 PF, but it seems these on-field moments will become rarer and rarer in my lifetime.

We are in a George Costanza like rut at the moment, we look at the Sydney/Geelong/Hawthorn's and do the exact opposite to them year-in, year-out.

What was so unusual about Mitchell to West Coast? He is 34, probably approaching his final year and has aspirations to Coach and Hawthorn needed some room in their salary cap. Seems like a non brainer to me.

It isn't all roses at Hawthorn, they tried to trade Breust but like Hamish he was not interested. They have also upset Jordan Lewis and the latest article i read described the Hawks as 'being in crisis' over Lewis' negotiations with Melbourne. Matthew Lloyd is urging Lewis to walk.

The true genius will be on display if Hawthorn get O'Meara to go with Mitchell because they are going to have to part with a bit and then fit Jaeger under the cap.

Oh boy here we go. Another highly uninteresting personal matter played out on social media.

A lot of the trades these days are not the old fashioned "her's player A - give me pick B in return".

The planning is done months, even seasons prior. And they are incredibly complicated and convoluted, involving multiple draft pick swaps and other clubs.

The Port brains trust(sic) need to forget about the stoic CD types doing the wheeling and dealing. We need more entrepenurial, push-the-envelope types and start forward planning. We should be in blokes ears now for 2017 and 2018 trade deals.

Those days are long gone. Gotta keep up with the Jones's ;)

Does this mean Lobbe is gone?

13 players on the trade table and the PAFC is not really linked to any trades... The Zimbabwean dollar has more value obviously.

Can we match the 2007 trade period when the only player traded was Brad Symes?

....Chris Davies walks into the trade room with the other 17 clubs

CD - Hey boys i have a list of 13 players we are putting up for trade!
(hands out the list to the 17 clubs)
CD - Any takers?
(silence)
CD - Anyone???
(silence)
CD - Ok then thanks guys.. see ya later
(pulls out phone and plays bejewelled for the next 10 days)

His tackle stats don't even rank that well to other small forwards who don't rotate through the midfield let alone somehow equating to 8 tackles a match.

By comparison Paul Puolpolo had 4.6 tackles per match (34 goals). Ben McGlynn 4.4 (24 goals). Even Jamie Cripps had 4.1 tackles (28 goals).

Jake Neade 3.7 tackles per match (15 goals).

I don't mind Jake Neade but to me he's the 30th player on our list and needs to do far more than arm waving pressure acts to be best 22.

Never said he was best 22. I said he was a good depth player for when Young, Impey or our pick 9 are injured.

Plus, the guys you mention are part of functioning forward lines that have players that all defend. Dixon wasn't up to speed this year, Young was still learning, Schulz was cooked and Wingard was recovering from bad concussion.

The fact that he did as well as he did is pretty good all things considered.

He plays a specialist role and was given a contract to reflect that. Don't know why people can't understand that.

I guess if our 13 players are generally non best 22 for us, and we aren't a top 8 side, it probably isn't surprising that there is next to no interest

You'd have to say if we only partake in a minor way re trades after the last two years the whole club is on notice next year. The noose around so many will tighten very quickly if we are middle of the rd. Personally what the Hawks have done is progressive and always looking at ways to improve, keeping all on notice all of the time - kinda like how we used to be here in the other league. The mental pressure will be on from game 1.

Two years added on is too long a contract for a player outside your best 22 who ideally wouldn't be in it.

13 players on the trade table ....
I'll bite. Where do you get that figure?
If you're just talking about out of contract players (9) that doesn't count. Hartlett or the club stepped back, for whatever reason. Ah Chee is the only one I've heard of that's 'live' in this.

We should get plenty of picks to spend in the draft then. A nice big rebuild.
