hey hey hey...we just got back our pick from the gold coast that we should never have given them in the dixon deal.

that deal should have had port getting pick 22. anything above that is a stupid trade.

We have to realise that we are in the position of having to use our first round picks, not trade them. The northern clubs can use later picks and points for academy picks but we cannot, we can only take the best available at the time. If we are at the same position next year we would be looking at coming into the draft at 28, in a draft widely tipped to be better than this years that is not a good start. And I think it is likely we will be a few places further down the draft order as we will probably finish in finals next year.
The draftvalue calculator works out for us on this, even assuming next year our first will be 14 we would have made out by about 300 points. see below

And if it was lower then even more. But what would we want to use the draft value calculator for? It doesn't mean anything in our selections. At least this year we have 3 selections inside the top 30 and the #19 is considered a first round selection for the future trading rule of 2 in 4 years.

The deal sees Port Adelaide with two first-round selections after receiving the Lions' priority selection.

You know what actually I was thinking this is a good deal because we're going to win the flag so it's actually all heaps sweet guys you can relax now

Yep. This is the "we're a top-4 side" narrative writ large.

I mean, if we are we've just knocked this one out of the park. If we're not we've gone for short-term pressure alleviation and job security which will see another 2010-12 period looming fairly quickly.

People keep saying oh well we'll trade back into the first round next year.

You have to give up quality to get quality!

We can't afford to give up our quality. We need to keep the quality and trade out the surplus stuff. Unfortunately the surplus stuff has no value. So talk of us getting back into the 1st round next year wouldn't be beneficial anyway.

Yeah I don't get how that makes it any better................... umm ok so let's just have 2 high draft picks next year?

Not a very clever troll mate, Hawthorn's deal is just as bad as ours especially if they use multiple first rounders on O'Meara & his knees don't come good.
Let's see what we do with our picks then and compare who the Hawks get with theirs!

I'm ok with it now that I know that 19 is counted as a first round pick.

9 + 19 means that from 2018 to 2019 we can trade our first round picks for players from GWS.

With decent kids putting pressure on your second and third year players to perform, they in turn will put pressure on our best 22 to perform.

Seriously we have a massive hole in our list at the moment. Olli Wines isn't a young player anymore, and who's younger than him that you would call an elite talent? Or someone who might become a star? Logan Austin?

First rounders are extremely valuable to us because we keep throwing them away for quick fixes. So what do we do? We throw it away for speculative picks.

If we don't at least play finals next year, everyone who agreed to this trade, everyone who knew about this trade and didn't stop it from happening, needs to be fired. Plain and simple. Your balls are on the line now fellas.

i'm melting I'm melting

It may seem hard to swallow now, but you won't know for sure who won this trade until at least the conclusion of the 2017 season.

The trade suggests to me that there are a couple of players you are really keen on this year and are banking on them being available at 19 and 30.

Additionally, if it clicks next year (which it could) it could easily just be a pick 12-16 type pick (before being downgraded further for academy picks) for 19 and 30 who in a deep draft who could be jets, which would be seen as a win.

I agree it seems a strange move now, but at least wait until the conclusion of 2017 to judge the club too harshly.
