every team only ever carries about 4 pure inside mid types on their list.
If we did get a top 5 pick then it will likely pick itself with us just having to go after the best available...we cant stuff around with top 10 picks
Outside class is still the #1 need for me. What I would do for us to draft a Milera type

There also had been a concerted effort this pre-season in this area in creating forward turnovers/locking the ball in our offensive end.Im not sure the contested ball situation is as much a midfield problem. I think our lack of experiance and size around the ground is contributing to the lopsided contensted possesion count.
I could be wrong but its just the impression that i get. In particular when the ball is in our forwardline we more often than not cant get near it as the opositon defenders out position, outmark and outscrap us to clear the footy.
I think its something that will improve as the age/experiance of the side improves, not nessesarily due to poor recruiting etc....
Contested footy isn't just about your inside midfielders either. You've got to be competitive all over the ground. Last year, we had a few guys who lost more contests than they won IMO - McStay, Taylor, Mayes among them. Getting Keays and Mathieson was excellent recruiting because they are both competitive types. I would love some more outside class on the team but they still need to be able to meet basic competitive requirements of winning and neutralising contests and sticking tackles.
If for whatever reason we have to draft a none QLD product with an early pick, we need to be picking Sam Petrevski-Seton from WA. Massively talented and a huge Lions fan that idolised Simon Black.
Very true. The round table on Fox talked a bit about it and in context with the Lions. Contested ball is both the inside and outside loose ball. They made the point that it is the outside contested ball that the lions are real bad on and that it comes to us being very originally on the spread.
hence why I have said we really need some outside class to win those contested loose balls
great post completely agree. if you look at the really good sides over the years they have self confidence but they also have a great deal of confidence in their team mates to win the contest. so they anticipate that win and move that half a second faster than their opponent and in turn they have confidence that if it back fires team mates will cover for them.A part of that spread is having the confidence that your guy is going to win the ball, and moving to an offensive position to recieve. We are still too reactionary, waiting on the outside to see what happens. As our players improve that confidence will grow and suddenly contested ball and clearances will jump.
Has been said a few times, especially in the middle, we get first hands to the ball fairly often, we just cant move the ball away.
agree. to put it another way- i don't like quotas. although from my understanding the club has said the preferential drafting of a queenslander will only be applied when they see 2 potential recruits as having very similar skill sets that fall in the same draft range.I would like feeback from fans ,regards brisbane lions desire to have 50per cent of its list to be queenslanders. My concern. Is that when we set targets , ( i believe every recruiting decision should be based upon talent) due to the go home factor we may become prone to and develope tunnel vision and miss better opportunities that will help improve the clubs on filed performances.
I have always stated we need elite foot skills and speed. I am willing to trade agressively to achieve that. I make no bones about the fact i really want us to target some indigenous talent, excite ignite the fans.brandon parfitt, sam petrevski-seton (if it is true he is a lions fan wow),jamie hampton. I have seen limited footage and cannot form an opinion but have heard rave reviews for EZekiel Frank, does anyone on the lions board know more details about him.i know he players forward going by the limited footage. Could he be used as athird tall to add some bite in the forward line?
.It's more of an ideal than an objective, isn't it? I can't imagine it would have any sway on drafting other then if there's two players rated more or less the same, they're likely to plump for the local.I would like feeback from fans ,regards brisbane lions desire to have 50per cent of its list to be queenslanders. Be worth keeping an eye on Lachlan Waite - I think he is eligible this year. 191cm mobile forward. Step brother to Josh Schache. Comes from Seymour Football Club which is coincidentally also the Lions and now follows us. Bit of a late developer (only added to Bushrangers list after this years' practice matches based on his good form) but I liked the look of him as a top up player last year. Not Josh mark 2 by any means but takes a grab and likes a goal.

When you analyse the situation it would be comforting in the knowledge that 50% of your list is homegrown and not going to pull up stumps and leave. However the numbers of Qlders being drafted in the last 20yrs let alone stars or top players of the competition are more or less rare as hens teeth and I suppose that is when the club will be subjective with 'like for like' players and leaning towards the academy player. Hopefully with the introduction of the academy and elite programs we will see a greater influx of better players from qld coming into the competition.Desire means wish, objective means what you are trying to achieve .I feel it is pure seamtics on words. And everything is subjective. Having stated that ,to quote CEO Greg Swan exactly"its our plan to have 50 per cent of the list being Queenslanders.if we can".what goes on in the mind of a recruiter, when your CEO states that ? Who knows? I feel the human tendancy may then lead to focus of finding players to fit those prerequisites, objectives, wishes. i agree with you if we compare apples vs apples sure ,it makes things really easy, but every player is different in terms of strenghts and weaknesses, which therefore makes it harder to compare like for like.the one thing i really like this year is the under 18 Allies will be competing against the best teams i.e vic country rather than inferior opposition, lets see how well our best players compare against the best of the best from the tradtional footy states.i am personally really excited by this development and should have happened along time ago.Quite a few years ago i wanted a queensland team in the tac cup to test the ability of our players against the best.

Looking at the first round I thought it was great to see the return of the 'ruckman' and with the increase in free flowing footy contested ball will become even more important and also taps to advantage. Looking at our crop of ruckman it really is quite bare and would like to think that we will pick one up in this years draft or even two (rookie possibly). There are a couple supposedly, Goddard being one from WA and Ladhams from SA however I came across the name of Tony Olango, NT to keep an eye on for this years champs.
Yep totally agreed, can see the club's efforts in regards to this also. The club when when it comes to drafting should never be ruled by fear. With recent appoints in the club ,the club should start believing the go home five is a thing of the past.this belief may be infectious throughout the club and most importantly the playing list. Totally agree ,queensland is starting from ground zero in terms of young player development compared to traditional states. I hope the only way from here, is up.
Would love a Wines/Parker type mid with our first pick in the draft.
Yes. Players who win the hard ball and are able to break away from the pack are worth their weight in gold.
It's an interesting one isn't it in regards to what we need and partly the problem is that our list is so young and untried at the top level. This season is really important IMO in seeing those who will be long term players for us and where they play. In regards to the contested beast I can see where the majority are coming from but also have to take into account that our midfield is pretty well settled, 26 and under age wise and we also drafted Mathieson and Keays last year.Would love a Wines/Parker type mid with our first pick in the draft.
The more I think of it I would rather see Hanley go back to HBF as an older head and also to again give us that run and carry out off the backline with Cutler. Dawson showed some promise with his footskills last year but from reports there are other areas that he needs to improve. I would also like to see Reuben developed back there as a small defender with leg spread like an Impey/Johannisen type but form reports he's been training as a small forward which I think is a big mistake. Rolls (academy prospect) has nice footskills coming out of the backline and he could be one we take.We definitely need a distributor of the footy coming out of the backline, this is a priority for us in the next draft/trade period
Did you get this information first hand WA Lion or did you hear it from someone else? Would love to draft Petrevski-Seton. Is very quick, has elite foot skills on both his left and right foot and tackles hard.If for whatever reason we have to draft a none QLD product with an early pick, we need to be picking Sam Petrevski-Seton from WA. I was talking to an American reporter who had written a piece on him, and while it didn't make it to print, the reporter (gil griffin ) stated sam was a massive lions fan that loved simon black and is also (not surprisingly) a fan of cyril rioliDid you get this information first hand WA Lion or did you hear it from someone else?
