FWIW Cal Twomey (AFL.com.au) said next year's draft crop is much stronger.

I feel like the media always pumps up the following year's draft but this is pleasing to hear in light of today's deal with Port/GC.
Draft 'wisdom' 101- next year's draft is always stronger or weaker, but don't ask anyone to explain why.

I don't really think it'll matter...pick 1 will be ours to choose best available player with the Port pick being used for Ballenden. But either way, 2 x Top 10 picks are a great bargaining tool

Every pharking year they say this years draft is shallow and next years is stronger. Either the talent gets better every single year or they're full of shit. I'm going the latter. Probably more likely that defence isn't very strong in the juniors so they look like stars

Are we still telling gcs were going to bid on bowes or was that just because of the hanley deal

Question for some of the more informed parties (Quigley, Cotter et al); there's been a lot of talk and conjecture as to who and when will make a bid on Bowes/Setterfield. Depending on where in the draft that pick happens, it could certainly influence how a lot of the other picks fall and can shape the draft (to a point).

My question is this; are either Bowes or Setterfield legitimately worthy picks for our #3 to make a bid on and actually hope to get? Forget about academies working together and all that jazz, I am genuinely interested as to the quality of these players and if the club would be happy to accept them without a moment's second thought if we made a bid on one of them at #3, and GC/GWS don't match?

Would either of them be a good pick up and on par (or better) than Ainsworth/SPS/Brodie/Taranto etc who will likely be in the mix at #3?

Personally, there are others I'd take ahead of both at Pick 3. With that said, I wouldn't be against bidding on either at pick 3, I just prefer some of the others options available. I feel someone like Ainsworth, Taranto or SPS has a higher ceiling whereas Bowes and Setterfield are probably safer type choices.

If you follow the various media draft analysts, Bowes is rated at 3rd or 4th.

Setterfield usually around 7th or 8th.

Pretty sure Quigley posted in the last week that he doesn't rate Bowes as high.

Ballenden won't be a top 10 pick based on his performances as a underage player this year in the Championships for Queensland. He should definitely attract a bid somewhere late in the 1st round though. The Academy prospect get talked up in high regards around this time of the year.

Thanks Cotter. If drafted, where would you hazard to guess where Bowes/Setterfield would likely slot into our current lineup positions-wise?

Uhhh pretty sure there's a whole other year of development and games to go before Ballendan is bid on... I'm predicting it's somewhere between pick 1 and not drafted.

Quite a few people on here thinking we'll need to use a first round pick to get Ballenden. I will eat my hat if he is bid on before pick 18.
Weren't we saying Allison was Top 5 last year? Indeed a year is a long time.

Draft 'wisdom' 101- next year's draft is always stronger or weaker, but don't ask anyone to explain why.

Cal actually did explain why he feels next years draft is stronger. He said next year there's a more even spread of players, where as this year there's not a lot of top end KPP talent, mostly just classy mids/half forwards.

Ultimately, they both become midfielders. They'd have to be doing something pretty special to be consistently getting games in what is hopefully a fully fit Lions midfield.

I'd say they'd both start off in the reserves to adjust and probably be mostly depth players in their first seasons of one of them was drafted to us.

Did you watch Allison much last year? He was a top 10 talent last year hands down. His form then didn't convert to this year.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, we had Eric Hipwood and Ben Keays who were drafted around what most expected a year out. Andrews was underrated and went very late in the Draft. I honestly think this whole 'academy players are overrated' schtick is is over-exaggerated

Remember when everyone was going nuts over Conway and Tickner too?

Agreed on these two. Back then we overrated players. I'd argue since then it hasn't been near as bad.

Plenty of players look like top draft selections as 17 year olds. That last year of junior development is by far the most important one. It's very, very hard to predict what's going to happen in the space of a year.

Andrews was underrated, by everyone it would seem.

Ballenden has a lot to work on and as it stands, I'd be reluctant to call him a top selection. But with young talls, you look for glimpses and he's shown them.

I remember Keays as slipping significantly too.

Can you imagine if Barrett got his hands on a quote like this from a Lions official... I can:p

"I'm hearing that Brisbane rate Ballendan as a real chance at being taken with the number 1 draft pick next year"

Ballenden certainly has enough talent to be one of the top picks next year. He needs to work a hell of a lot harder though. He can kick goals and teams pay for that. At the Champs he had one hugely impressive piece of work I thought and very surprisingly it was a defensive effort. He ran down a back with a really hard chase of about 40m across goal. He showed me some pretty decent pace and he can move when he wants to. He can lead up and is a good mark. Agility might need a bit of work but I would not say he is bad in this regard. I watched him ruck against NSW and he held his own against some pretty well regarded opponents. The kid could be a very nice player for us, he has the tools.

No doubt we rated him, but terms of media who rated him, didn't Page Cardonia?

Your point still stands regarding Andrews and I'd pop Dawson in with him as I think he's got a lot of upside. Not many besides us and maube one other club really rated them.
