Don't recall there being any misguided commentary or shock, I was merely just trying to understand how our recruiters rated our academy players in the mix of the broader draft. But I'm glad I now have an informed view from an expert like yourself.

I actually think we've got to readjust our attitudes towards these Academy players. They aren't our players until we take them in the draft.

Just to quote a small portion of what you said, this is a great point and is how I look at it.

I know we don't do it but speaking hypothetically you would never (as a club) make any promises to a player.

Fair enough about him using his size I'm only going by a well placed source as I haven't really seen enough of him but a few games and it looked like he towered over everyone else. Said his skin folds are a huge concern and said he will be one of those blokes that will struggle to stay 'AFL fit'. Biggest concerns are his repeat efforts and conditioning and he has been put on some exercise plans to help combat these apparently.

Yeah I liked what I saw in terms of potential future as a KPF/Ruck, but definitely some work to be done on overall conditioning!

One of my best mates interviewed the coach of north ballarat after the draft. Said he rates the Lions system and welfare processes, and expects Jarrod Berry to be in the leadership group very early on in his career. Said Hugh and Jarrod are ecstatic to be going up together.

Sounds like Port's pick will be live for us and not used to pay for Ballenden.

The more I read up on our draft crop the more excited I get. Young players with good character and work ethic will add plenty to our list. We've really got a good bunch of young players at the club now. We just need to be patient with them and continue to add top tier talent. I'm really excited to see who ends up in our leadership group and who becomes our skipper.

Having Jarrod might help him though, however the rumour (just a rumour, I wont say it is fact) around the office of the paper is that he wants to stay in Victoria still. I hope the club can turn that around, and I want to say I will back them in. I'm just more worried about this one than any of the other draftees since 2013.

I hope we land Liam Ryan as small forward and take Jack Rolls.

I think our shortage of tall defenders is overrated and whilst we have Walker we have decent ruck depth. I expect Hipwood to rotate in the ruck as he develops in the future.

If Warrnambool get an AFL team I'll be worried. Vic country kids tend to love Brisbane, don't think he'll be going anywhere with his mates at the club.

The club well and truly believe different.

To be fair though, I wasn't aware that all those Victorian clubs were based on Dairy Farms.

My view is best available talent.* if we don't rate Ballenden where another club bids on him, then we pass.


*My completely uneducated opinion may vary considerably with yours, or the general consensus, so my best talent available might go by a different name. For example, Ben Ainsworth.

I can't believe that's a rule TBH. I'm sure first round picks that GC and GWS have had would have been used to match bids on academy players

I'm wondering if Fagan sees Hipwood as a defender with us having Bellenden in our Academy next year and Hipwood being an All-Australian defender they figured we could take the risk of not accepting North's bid in Watson
