Everyone talking about key forwards, this team is top of the ladder with this current forward structure.

HF: Rioli Gunston Puopolo
F: Bruest McEvoy Sicily

HF: , Curnow,
F: SOS, McKay

If anything we're a little short on high pressure small forwards than talls.
Yep. But we're also short on highly skilled and footy smart ball users who can get the ball to our forwards. Hard to apply forward pressure when its rarely there.

Ainsworth is an attack weapon.. he is small but plays much bigger..nice mover.. excellent reader.. one touch.. fast hands.. clever.
Not exactly what I would have had in mind but you can't go past the talent .

Rated highly, yes, worth pick #5 by himself with the other 3 worth the second rd pick ??? .......

Yes debatable

But I can't give much opinion as I don't know the players well

There is an argument though I suppose with young players that cast a wide net if you know what I mean- it's a numbers game !

Could trade pick 4 or 5 for two later first rounders. Use one on Prestia and one on Venables/McGrath/Galluci etc.
That way we bring a very good "ready to go" player into our midfield as well as keeping an eye on the future.

Venables and McGrath won't slip to late first round. Venables will go at #10 the latest imo.

Probably about same size as The Dominator.

Has abit of confidence and mongrel like him too.

Highly skilled.

2015 Vic Country boys...Weits, Harry, Charlie and Ainsworth.

I wouldn't be unhappy if we snagged Ainsworth.

This is about the 4th time this year Trigg has had to spell this out publicly, yet for some reason people are still running with the GWS4 or Prestia or Mitchell urban myths....hell even Boyd still gets a sporadic run now and then lol
GWS4 are youth and wont cost us our first round

This appraisal ticks a lot of boxes .
Is there any video of this lad available ?
Venables also ?

I just pictured a gorilla at a typewriter.

I posted a video of each a week or so ago in this thread.

i saw ainsworth last year at the championships and looked very good as a small forward. has he spent any time in the midfield?

reading the phantom drafts etc gallucci & venables seem to be two that would suit us at pick 5?

Cheers TODN ,
The message from Trigg is clear and consistent .
We will be taking our 1st pick to the draft and I'm very happy with this .
Ainsworth and Venables both sound like likely lads and both would appear to be around our mark in the draft order . :thumbsu:

Chucked a sickie today and as such, I've been doing a big crunch on the kids this year, their expected field positions, an analysis of our list and our weaknesses and strengths. Here's how I see our biggest needs:

1. Inside mids who are extractors. We need to get our hands on the ball more, simple as that. At the moment it only really Cripps and Gibbs, but Gibbs also plays outside a lot and is best suited to using his great distribution by foot as opposed to getting in and under. We are extremely thin here. Graham goes okay, but the jury is still out and he is just so slow by foot.

2016 Draft prospects - Will Brodie, Andrew McGrath, Daniel Venables, Jonty Scharenberg, Willem Drew, Dylan Clarke, Joseph Atley, Jack Graham, Jack Bowes (GC SUNS Academy), Kobe Mutch (GWS Academy), Harry Perryman (GWS Academy), Will Setterfield (GWS Academy), Brad Scheer (GC SUNS Academy)

2. Great skills and decision makers. It's abundantly clear that we lack skills and polish. Ed Curnow, Kerridge, Armfield, White, Buckley all can get a bit of the ball, but they struggle making the correct decisions, and they also struggle executing said decisions. We need footy brains and silk. Cripps is damaging by hand and can extract, but by foot he's only average.

2016 Draft prospects - Hugh McLuggage, Daniel Venables, Sam Petrevski-Seton, Jordan Gallucci, Willem Drew, Jonty Scharenberg, Jack Scrimshaw, Harrison Macreadie (GWS Academy), Harry Perryman (GWS Academy), Jack Bowes (GC SUNS Academy), Will Setterfield (GWS Academy)

3. Left footers. It's been stated that Bolton has asked SOS for lefties and it's clear why. Simmo is about our only one! When we play down the left side of the field, our skill execution is lacking because everyone is kicking on their non-preferred. We are extremely unbalanced. This definitely needs correcting.

2016 Draft prospects - Don't know, lack of data.

4. Key position Defenders. We really only have Sam Rowe as a gorilla KPD and we all know he gives 110%, but his is limited and also getting on in years. Glass-McKasker is a rookie and not showing a huge amount at the moment. Weitering is KPD size, but is better suited to playing off his man and setting up play as opposed to wresting beast forwards. We need to shore this up as they do take a few years to develop. Perhaps Marchbank and Tomlinson are our answers here if the mooted GWS4 v2.0 happens???

2016 Draft prospects - Declan Watson (Lions Academy), Harrison Macreadie (GWS Academy)

5. Outside mids. Think Brad Hill, Stephen Hill, Isaac Smith, Jack McCrae, Tom Scully etc. Pace, endurance and great skills and decision making. Doc and Simmo play this role mostly for us, but they are coming out of the backline to do so. Jury still out on Boekhorst and Cuningham is yet to debut. Definitely lack depth and quality here.

2016 Draft prospects -
Hugh McLuggage, Andrew McGrath, Daniel Venables, Jy Simkin, Jordan Gallucci, Sam Petrevski-Seton

If the draft order goes as predicted, we should end up with pick 5. Here's how I see the top 5 picks panning out:

1. Essendon - Will Brodie - Inside mid, fills need, will replace Jobe Watson
2. Brisbane - Hugh McLuggage - Next best, fills need for outside run and polish
3. Fremantle - Sam Petrevski-Seton - Local lad, quality utility. Although this pick could also be used to get Cam McCarthy from GWS or they might reach for Todd Marshall to fill that elusive KPF spot they desperately need filled. If so, then I think SOS would look very closely at calling SPS's name at pick 5.
4. Gold Coast - Jack Bowes (Academy Selection)
5. Carlton - ???

The first four pick themselves and from what I can see they are emerging as the clear(ish) standouts thus far. Either McLuggage or Brodie will go number one, depending on which one * see as the best/best fit for them. Lions (like last year) will take the one left and be happy as a pig in shit. Win-win for the Lions. Fremantle will take local boy and Shaun Burgoyne-like SPS. Suns will have to take Bowes here because there will be bids on him for sure, kid's a jet by all regards.

That leaves us. As we all know we need mids.

Andrew McGrath - 179cm / 75kg - (Small Def / Utlity)
is shaping up as the next best pick, but he's a 179cm / 75kg back flanker who can go through the middle. Do we really need another HBF? Doc, Tuohy, Simmo, Buckley, Byrne, Sheehan, Dick and even Plow and Weitering play like flankers. Also, he is quite small. If he plays in the guts for the rest of the year and shows that he can extract the ball and distribute we his stocks will rise in SOS's eyes.

Todd Marshall - 198cm / 87kg (KPF) seems like the next best prospect and he is a 198cm / 87kg KPF. Could be a good fit, but again, it's a position that we don't have a screaming need for. McKay, J. Silvagni, Gorringe, Jaksch, C. Curnow and Casboult indicates to me that we have KPF's shorn up. Not to mention a certain Ben Silvagni will be joining us in 2018. Then again, SOS has shown a willingness to draft talls early and without regard to other talls on the list in his time at GWS.

Ben Ainsworth - 179cm / 74kg (Small Fwd / Mid) seems to divide people, with a lot of folks saying he could be the best of this years crop, and others somewhat nonplussed by him. He's a unique prospect in that he's small, but seems to play like a KPF with an outstanding vertical leap and strong hands. He has the ability to turn matches in a matter of minutes and he'll eventually end up through the middle. He also seems a lot bigger than his 74kg. Kid is a nugget. Paul Chapman 2.0??? I'd be more than happy with him and he does also seem to fill a need as a small lead up forward, thought it must be said, it's not a pressing need.

Daniel Venables - 186cm / 81kg (Inside Mid / Fwd) I have a feeling if we have pick 5, then Venables will come our way. Explosive breakaway pace and can win his own ball, good user of the footy. Seems to tick all the boxes for us.

Jordan Gallucci - 183cm / 75kg (Outside Mid) could very well end up at the Blues. Classy outside mid who by all accounts is an outstanding user of the ball and has an explosive burst of pace.

This is by far the most interesting draft in a very long time for Carlton. This time last year pretty much everyone knew barring a massive surprise that we'd end up with Weitering. This year anything can happen. Do we keep our first pick? Do we trade it down for two bites of the cherry later on? Do we trade it to GWS for the GWS4? All I can be sure of is that I'm not sure about anything! SOS really has his work cut out for him this year. I'd love us to trade up into the first round to ensure another pick or two. This unfortunately will mean losing one or more of Casboult, Everitt or Tuohy as it's clear they have the most currency and are also somewhat expendable. If we could possibly jag 3 picks in the top 20, or two picks + the GWS4, then Jo Silvagni better watch out, coz I'll be trying to get into their bed.

You have got to worry about Ainsworth when his highlights package includes 2 bad missed at goal. The knock on him is he is not a great kick. No point being a forward if you can't score. I also worry about players that are going to develop into midfielders in time because often they don't. Like Lennon and TMenzel.
