really nervous for tonight

want SPS but fear GC might select him at 4 as they need midfield talent. could be between SPS or Brodie for the Suns.

We will all be considered racists if we do not take SPS according to some comments above. Not sure why the racists comments have come out as I think the comments I have read on here are focused on his talent and go home risk as a WA kid. This year several WA kids went home in the trade period. We almost lost Gibbs because he is from SA. We previously got Doc because he was from Vic. If we pick an interstate kid they have an additional risk attached.

That said I like SPS's skills, but would refer a bigger bodied player like Taranto or Brodie more as there skills are also very good (both all Australians this year/SPS was not) and I think Brodie is Cripps like in potential.

If drafting in hindsight lets look at 2013:

2013 draft
Pick 1: Tom Boyd (GWS)
Pick 2: Josh Kelly (GWS)
Pick 3: Jack Billings (St Kilda)
Pick 4: Marcus Bontempelli (Western Bulldogs)
Pick 5: Kade Kolodjashnij (Gold Coast)
Pick 6: Matthew Scharenberg (Collingwood)
Pick 7: James Aish (Brisbane)
Pick 8: Luke McDonald (F/S – North Melbourne)
Pick 9: Christian Salem (Melbourne)
Pick 10: Nathan Freeman (Collingwood)

Pick 13: Pat Cripps

If you were drafting this again I think Pat Cripps goes far earlier, as the experts are not perfect.

Brodie at #5 is a bargain this year. So if SPS is picked I will not be unhappy but I prefer others.

Great post, solid reasoning

Spoke to Brett Anderson, SEN Draft Expert, a little while ago who was kind enough to take my call off air.

Me: Will GWS be able to into deficit (using points from next years ND picks) to match bids on their academy players, given potential draft penalties pending for next year???

BA: It's a very good question to which I don't have a definitive answer for, but I suspect GWS were given a "heads-up" not to trade picks 15 & 37 for this year.

Me: Who will you be speaking to when you arrive in Sydney later this morning to find out???

BA: Gillon McLachlan or Mark Evans as Andrew Dillon is unlikely to be there. I'll be definitely doing some investigation when I get up there though.

Me: How many of the Academy boys do you think GWS will draft???

BA: Assuming that Essendon don't bid on Setterfield at #1, Setterfield, Perryman, Cumming & I think GWS may have made some commitment to Macreadie when they moved him to Sydney. Of course it depends where the bids come in, e.g. there's a rumour that Sydney may bid on Cumming with either #9 or #19. I think that Mutch gets to the open draft, Sproule gets to the open draft....and as do most if not all of the others. It will become very interesting though if they're unable to go into deficit and bids come early.

Me: How strong are the Phantom Drafts this year as to who you think will go where???

BA: Well for once the clubs are keeping their cards close to their chest. While Essendon will take either McGrath or McCluggage, with GWS it's much less clear. You could make a case for Taranto, Petrevski-Seton, McCluggage, McGrath, Ainsworth or even Bowes. Taranto could go as early as #2 or as late as #9. Whoever Essendon and more importantly GWS take at #2 will determine how the rest fall. Last year was easy because we had a full-blown rehearsal with the introduction of the new system so we knew who everyone was taking all the way out to #30 by the middle of the day.

Me: Know you're on the way to the airport so thanks for taking the call.

BA: Anytime and only too happy to answer peoples questions. Will definitely check out the "lay of the land" on your first question.

Good bloke Brett. Probably one of his busiest days of the year where everyone wants a piece of his time and he still found time to take my call off air on his way to the airport. Let's hope he gets a scoop on something no one else has asked about. :thumbsu:

That's a great point about them possibly losing picks next year, how that maybe affects their matching bids tonight

What time do we think SOS will shake his head and gasp audibly at another team's selection?

I don't want to miss it this time!
He should be wired up with the special effects mike allowing us to take in all the action directly

They will just trade out several deadwood players that are best 22 for every other team in the AFL to get back in.

You have a right to be.

Could go awry for us very quickly if this eventuates:

* - McGrath
GWS - Taranto
Brisbane - Luggage
GCS - SPS
Carlton - ?

I think this is the scenario where the scrimshaw rumours could eventuate. Would we want Scrimshaw or Ainsworth?

This is the question I've been thinking about. As much as I am a fan of Ainsworth I'm not sure whether we'd take him or Brodie in this scenario. If Gold Coast know we'd take Brodie, then SPS goes at 4 100%.

Dodo accidentally let slip that * would be taking McGrath at 1 on SEN this morning.

Was being asked does he pick best player, or best for their needs. He said best player. Then they were asking about McGrath. and his response was along the lines of "we certainly think he is the best player in the draft".

He tried to back track and say "the guy we have selected we believe is the best". But it was very obvious it was in reference to McGrath.

I feel Taranto being available to us hinged on * taking McLuggage.

Unless something quite unexpected happens in the next 3 picks it looks like SPS will be best available fit for us.
Yeah I thought the same thing.

Was wondering why Francis Leach didn't jump on it ...

Correct and I've been saying this for a week or so. Having said that GWS might like him as well. Apart from McGrath @1 I don't think it's the "lay down misere" everyone seems to think it is.

If Suns take SPS, I say we defer to Brodie. Go with the best midfielder available. Not sure Ainsworth - while best available at that point - is best player for us with the recent small mid/forwards acquired.

Cant see Gold Coast taking SPS as they already have Jack Martin who plays very similarly, and need grunt to replace Prestia. In addition, SPS has been pretty clear that he wants to play for a Melbourne club, so Gold Coast would be crazy to take him instead of Ainsworth after the last few years they've had of players bailing.

I think Brisbane could still take Ainsworth, as they will value players who wanna be there, even if the talent level isn't identical. Look at how many players have left the game recently because they weren't happy, or had mental illness (which can be exacerbated by your circumstances).

McGrath or McLuggage??? Maybe he'll get confused and call out McGluggath.

If the above plays out I hope we take best available at 5. I get we want midfielders but if they think Ainsworth is a better player I think we have to take him. I do not think it matters if we don't get a midfielder if he ends up like a Windgard or a Robbie Gray. I have no knowledge of the players just hope we go for who we think is the better footballer regardless of position.

Definitely could see McCluggage getting to the Suns. Lions could easily justify picking Ainsworth over him, but would be laughed at for doing so I feel. Either way, we're unlikely to get him.

Hoping for another late bolter (Taranto appears to be the Oliver of 2016) to help us out.

Not mutually exclusive in either direction.

For the most part, those who have campaigned against SPS have done so on the basis of football talent. There have, however, been a few posters who have generated an argument against on the pure basis of his ethnicity. These are the ones that have been taken to task.

1.McGrath
2.Taranto
3.Ainsworth
4.McCluggage
5.Setterfield
6.SPS

If Brisbane pass on Ainsworth who has said he wants to play there for McCluggage and McCluggage bails out in 2 years time , the AFL outta fine them and strip them of draft picks .
They of all clubs should be aware of this.

If Emma Quayle is remotely close to the draft I will bow down and call her the AFL's goddess.

If, however, she doesn't get close with all of her 'inside sources' I will laugh hard at all of her fanboys/girls.

Her phantom draft is very different to almost all of the others: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...se-in-the-2016-afl-draft-20161124-gswol9.html
Why? The big differences are an earlier bid on Cumming and a slight reshuffle of two talls in the 20s. That's it. The Cumming bid is the only twist.

restriction of trade?
He's still contracted, so it's a breach of the AFLPA CBA if he signs with another AFL club. Technically I think it's a breach of the CBA if he signs with any other football club, but he's getting a pass there.

What exactly are you trying to say here, and why exactly are you saying it?

Ainsworth yes thanks, you take X Factor with first pick
Game changers are rare

Meat N Potatoes later n hope for no spuds
They're both game changers with x-factor. One sets up the game from defence with ease and seems excellent odds to transition to a critical attacking role from the stoppage role, the other sets up the attack. Tough call.

wouldn't be unhappy with either.
Wouldn't be surprised at all if we go Marshall at 5, some good mids will still be there later on this draft
That's if ainsworth is gone already.
I think our first pick will either be
Ainsworth
Marshall
Or brodie
Based on availability
