Pick 82 and 90.. are we sure the draft is that deep?
I think these picks might move forward when GWS use all of their mid draft picks to make points to match Academy bids.

Could C.Cox be there at 43?
Highly doubt it. Wouldn't make it past the 2 2nd round picks North have in the early 30's.

Reckon that self confidence can develop in players once they get opportunity in a professional environment. Once he develops more muscle, he should build more confidence in himself being a hard nut. Composure can develop in a professional environment too - just ask CC. BTW, Berry's not allergic to shrugging off tackles either ;)

J. Jackie says hi!

Haven't we missed the cut off date for nominating rookies for promotion.
As an official upgrade (ie becoming a main list member), yes. But if we just pass a pick, we can keep them on the Rookie list and nominate them next year and have them effectively become a main list player.
I've never really understood the benefit of doing this, but teams do it all the time.

I've probably seen more of Cox than anyone here [4 games in person] and I've given my assessments after those games on here, personally on what I've seen I wouldn't use pick 13 on him. Let's not forget he's a year older than nearly every other player in this draft. What he does have are very good foot skills [dual sided] and good pace but is very outside, doesn't win much contested ball and floats in and out of games too much for my liking. I see him as a boom or bust type draft choice and one I wouldn't be comfortable with using a valuable 1st round pick on. If Hamish thinks he sees it in him I'm fine with that but there would be quite a few I'd personally place ahead of him. I'm just not comfortable in today's AFL environment with players that don't win enough of their own ball......a must have in Finals footy IMO.

Pretty good summary Bicks - I don't think the extra year in age comes into it much because it's cancelled out by lack of exposure in elite pathways

You definitely picked it early that we had some interest in him - well spotted !!

In some ways given the apparent depth of inside mid talent to be there at pick 43 it wouldn't surprise me if pick 13 had a bit more X factor to it whether they be Hayward or C Cox ( or hopefully scrimshaw )

I would also like to know this. Since Shaw retired I haven't really been reading up.
I understand this .....too emotionally choked up?

This X Factor thing that gets used a lot in the AFL, how many of the very good midfielders have it??

Unless I've got this X Factor thing wrong I'd say there are only a hand full that do currently.

I'd gleefully use a pick like that on this guy as a project player.

Mitch McCarthy
Ruckman Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country
196cm

87kg

10/10/1997

McCarthy has a background in basketball, having pursued a college scholarship in America in recent years. It means he is still a little raw in footy terms, but his leap and overhead marking gives him a point of difference in the eyes of recruiters. McCarthy is an overage prospect and can be used in the ruck or across centre half-back. He is unlikely to be seen again this season as he nurses a stress fracture in his foot, which cut short his year through the under-18 championships.

Would suit: Needs some development but has a couple of standout tricks in his jump and aerial exploits. Probably settles down as a key defender.

I haven't really seen much of him, just highlights and the All Stars game where he was pretty invisible but the fact he even played in that game after not playing footy at all last year is pretty remarkable. I like that he has elite foot skills, can't rate that highly enough in the modern game.

Actually he was on fire early in the first quarter in that game, had quite a few possessions and then hardly sighted for the rest of the game.

Hey Bicks what ever happened to Ezekiel Frank? I think I remember you being quiet interested in him early in the year, did he not have a good year?

Agree that I personally wouldn't use a first on Cox, but I can see what Haggis would see in him - a lot of upside. Has the tools to absolutely be able to break a game apart. The fact he's only entered a good footy system this year likely means he has an especially high ceiling, too. He's still a risk, though. Lot of others I'd prefer.

Kid went off the rails, chucked in his schooling here in Ballarat and went home up North...pity, quite a talented kid.

And some were saying this was just a so so draft early on.....And we don't have a 2nd round pick!:(

Curtly better shape up this pre-season..

THE AFL draft is five sleeps away and mystery still surrounds who will be crowned the No.1 pick.

It is less predictable than a coin toss, with three junior gems still on Essendon’s whiteboard.

Will the Bombers plump for the dash and drive of Andy McGrath? Is goalkicking midfielder Hugh McCluggage simply too good to overlook? Or is Greater Western Sydney academy star Will Setterfield’s potential so great that Essendon will bid, knowing the Giants want McGrath and are unlikely to match?

The dux is usually pretty clear by July — think Jacob Weitering, Tom Boyd, Jon Patton and Lachie Whitfield. That goes to the heart of how even — and deep — this year’s crop is. The same dozen or so names keep bobbing up in predicted top 10s.

Beyond that, clubs selecting from 11-30 are likely to have three or four names they would be happy to take. One chief recruiter reckons players will slip to the 20s that could command top-10 selection in other years.

It’s a draft thin for talls and flush for smalls. Ruckmen? Tim English should go top-10 because of his mobility and midfield impact, but then there is tumbleweeds.

Bicks would you say that the depth of this draft has become apparent lately, or was it pretty clear early on?

If that's in regard to Jarrod Berry just don't go there...just don't.

Not in regard to Berry himself but the claim being made. The claim makes no sense whatsoever. If any player has self doubts in the under age competition then those will be magnified in the AFL. The skill level increases significantly, the pace increases significantly and the intensity increases significantly so if the play has any self doubts coming onto the list, he will get eaten up and spat out of the system before he can blink. If there are self doubts in the underage competition, it will only get harder when the competition increases, not easier.

Again, this is not in regards to Berry. I wouldn't know if he has them or nor. Have not followed him closely so can't comment on him specifically but in general the claim being made makes no sense whatsoever.
