I am worried that the club would think the same thing. I am no expert on these kids as I haven't seen any of them play at all but I have read the opinions of a fairly wide range of people who do know what they are talking about.

Jeffcrowe, I know that you have a pretty going knowledge on the draft can you please convince me why we should pick Brodie if he is there at 13. I am sure some people are keen solely because the consensus is that he is a top 5 selection (even though if he was available at 13 he evidently isn't rated as top 5). I am concerned that for an inside mid he doesn't get a lot of the ball and i have read that his handball out of a contest isn't particularly good. I don't know what his outside game is like compared to other inside mids. To me he seems like a player with a really low ceiling.
He's a fine player and was in mix to be pick 1 about halfway through the year ... He's a big sized mid which we lack and a hard worker / exceptional clearance player with very good competitiveness

He can develop his outside game more but
that will come with getting in the system and more training

Yes he does have a lowish ceiling in terms of development compared to some others but that's also because he was ready to play AFL footy at the start of this year

He would be a bargain at 13 - don't worry about that. Straight into thommo's role and would have immediate impact

If you and Bicks think that he would be a good pick then I will trust your judgement. From what I read he sounds like a clearance player only but with questionable vision and handball skills. He looked to have a more rounded game than I expected from that highlights package.

Are you sure you're talking about Brodie? He seems to have great skill by hand. Venables is the one I'm concerned about, his handballing/vision seems very poor. I don't like his footy smarts at all. I don't understand the fuss about him.

I would be happy if we go with a solidly-built midfielder that isn't overly quick or slow, or necessary elite in any one field but is a genuine, 2-way B+ Grade player. We kind of just need a player that can fill a gap and is ready to contribute within their first season or two.

Would rather go for a 'safe option' player like this, than on a riskier player that may have a higher ceiling (or be a massive flop). What player would that be for this draft?

So Venables or Brodie if available ......IMO Venables with the higher ceiling

I'd agree with this ......but i will disagree with Venables footy smarts, they're just fine

Venables seems to have that leg power / strength to get away from opponents, whereas Brodie tends to get cramped by players and not as good at warding off opponents

Venables the higher risk higher reward pick - still some doubts on him

Brodie you know what you're getting
Don't disagree .....Brodie more advanced and the better junior player .....Venables injury interrupted, but could be the better senior player

What i like is good hands, and Venables doesn't lose his feet at all ......same can also be said with Brodie, but IMO a few more tricks, better pace, and love the better physicality he brings

I like venables ability forward ( not many of our mids have that )
I like Brodie's size ( not many of our mids have that )

As long as we draft a mid with talent and a point of difference I'll be happy

No contest between Brodie and Venables if Brodie's available...

Brodie's at about five in my power rankings. As I've said, reckon he has a higher ceiling than many think, as he's still got a decent amount of muscle to put on (189cm and only 82kg), which will allow him to gain more brute power at the contest. Very, very smart clearance player, reads the taps so well. As you said, he's competitive, quite the tackler. His outside run is pretty decent for a clearance player IMO, can run and carry but doesn't have lasting speed. First five steps from a contest are quick and explosive, though. And yes, he's ready to go from round one. Would be a dream come true if he lasts to 13, think North picks him up before us, though

I have North taking Florent...

IMO Norths first priority is speed, speed, and more speed (Wells and Harvey)......they have plenty of inside mids ....think Brodie slips thru at least to West Coast, but you'd have to back GC with 4 picks wouldn't you ?

Agree that Brodie > Venables

But I wouldn't necessarily be more excited if we got Brodie as I think if we rated Venables then he could really come on

Brodie is the safer bet no doubt and would impact straight up which is a bonus rather than the sealer

About a 10-15% chance that Brodie will be there with our pick

Yeah I think his running could be OK with some pre seasons - and could end up a reasonable link run/carry player to back up his inside stuff

That's where his main improvement lies IMO

He has more scope to do that than Matt Crouch for example and would also be a difficult match up forward with his size

Not a great kick but ok and I'm sure that can improve in system also

I'd be pretty happy with Perryman

Would be like having 2 Rory Lairds that can rotate mid/ half back

184cm - taller than he looks and another competitor

I have North taking Florent...
They definitely need an outside-leaning type, IMO Florent is the obvious choice but not sure they will pass up on Brodie.

At this stage, I have this:

1: Ess - McCluggage
2: GWS - McGrath
3: Bris - Ainsworth
4: GC - Taranto
5: GWS - Setterfield
6: GC - Bowes
7: Carl - SPS
8: Freo - English
9: GC - Hayward
10: GWS - Perryman
11: Syd - Logue
12: GC - Scrimshaw
13: North - Brodie
14: WCE - Gallucci
15: Adel - Berry/Venables
