Ok this guy is a star !! What the chance he will get to 2 though ? Surely essendon take him dont they ? Or are they into mcGarath

Robert Shaw was coaching McGrath and Shaw is working at Essendon, so putting 1&1 together makes many of us feel we will over look McCluggage.

He's from Deniliquin, and had started playing and training through our Academy, but then:

But his swift rise brought the ire of rival clubs, who questioned his involvement with the Giants' academy system.

The AFL investigated the issue and pulled him out of the academy due to a "registration issue", leaving him available to all clubs in the open draft.

Yeah it's fair enough, he was a cricketer and went to on a tour with the junior Australian team

Why does that matter?

Was he overage when he joined the academy? Isn't it dependent on the length of time you spend in the academy? Did he fail to pass eligibility criteria?

The article just talks vaguely about a registration issue.

Apparently he only signed up last year

Apparently he only signed up last year

From what I understand, he was in it as a 12/13/maybe 14 year old, then went and played cricket, then came back last year. No big deal though. Don't have a huge problem with the decision. Wasn't overly impressed with his carnival (though I didn't see all of it). It is what it is.

That sounds fair enough, I just don't quite like the fact that the AFL appeared to make the call once clubs complained about it.

Surely the rules should be clear enough such that everyone knows where they stand at all times.

Was a bit excited with him then saw him a fair bit in the Championships and in the TAC Cup.

Has some nifty skills and some X Factor but my wife has broader shoulders and she is petite!

Feels more like a Jaksch than a Patton

http://m.afl.com.au/news/2016-10-25/tomorrows-heroes-tim-english

I must admit when it was spruiked that Tim English was a possibility at pick 2 if Essendon took McGrath I panicked but check out the footage here!

I dont think I've ever seen a 200cm+ person with better skills than this...looks like a polished midfielder!!

He will be a revelation when he strengthens up and has elite AFL qualities.

Looks like Twomey has changed his tune on saying we are keen on English to now saying if we miss McGrath we would look at Ainsworth which makes a lot more sense, he is also saying Cumming is now looking like a chance to go in the second round.

But of more interest in the Twomey article is:
The AFL this year changed rules relating to the 'hidden picks' used by clubs to bank draft points, but the Giants can have an additional three picks due to an allowance given to clubs who traded in future picks in 2015 because when those deals were made the clubs didn't know the rules were set to be altered.

Which most likely means all of Downie, Mohr, Simpson have re-signed for 2017 but just not announced but should know for sure soon with the first list lodgement on Oct 31.

Yes, I must admit I'd been wondering if that might be the case in regards 3 extra picks. Therefore, we only need to delist or rookie one of the four OOC players to be able to use all 11 point-worthy picks.

Any reason why you listed Downie, Mohr and Simpson as likely to have re-signed, and not Barrett? Have you heard something definitive, or is that just your own thoughts?

Next question is what actual number on the main list is required? Kept on being said during trade period '40', but surely it should be actually 38 to 40, like all other clubs, in which case we might go to only 38. Question after that is how the mechanism for upgrading rookies to the main list occurs? Normal clubs are straightforward in nominating in advance and using the last pick(s) available to a club, but for us we want to make that decision on the night, based on how many picks get used up matching bids (i.e. we can use multiple picks for a single draftee), and if we do elect to rookie someone, we want to use expended (i.e. no points) picks rather than a live (i.e. with points) pick.

With the info in that story, we would have 32 players if only one of the OOC players is delisted, and could take as few as 4 draftees, plus upgrade Reid & Lloyd off the rookie list. I don't expect that to happen, although depending on points used, I could see possibly one of the two (presumably Reid) being upgraded after 5 draftees are picked, although more likely to see 6 draftees chosen. That would still leave 2-3 rookie spots available for academy kids.

On list size the 40 list size rather then 38-40 is base on both Craig Cameron and Wayne Campbell having both said that we would go with a list size of 40 for 2017. With Barrett nothing concrete to say he is gone rather a suspicion that will be the case but will known for sure on Monday with the list lodgements due then.

What's up with everyone wanting to go to Carlton and Collingwood anyway? Why not, say, Hawthorn or Geelong where they might actually win the premiership in the near future? (Assuming they want to go home to Victoria.)

Theyve had enough of seconds and want to play 1sts.

If it was just for a flag they would stay.

In saying that our cap and list size collapsed so we had to clear em out mostly anyway.

There's are more at Melbourne than there are at Collingwood (Bugg, Frost, Tyson, McKenna vs Treloar, Adams WHE) so it's not all Carlton and Collingwood vs Hawthorn and Geelong.

As GG said above, it's the chance to play, not just the chance to win. But there's also the 'play with mates' factor. Why is WHE at Collingwood? He's a mate of Treloar and Treloar was in his ear about coming. Why are they all piling up at Carlton? SOS is part of it, but so is the chance to play with the guys you were playing NEAFL with, only this time at senior level.

For a while there we specifically drafted players who were friends, passing over some better players, in order to have mates with them to help settle in. Didn't really work, but was interesting experiment for a new club to try.
