I understand why the Giants would make a play for him and yes he's probably worth more to the Giants than the compo pick they'll get from the Pies, but I don't think he's keen to go anywhere...

Giants won't be making a play for him don't worry. Costs a lot more for a player you trade in and we have plenty of players that are or will be every bit as good as him that already play for us which will cost us less.

and what about Adam Tomlinson?
would you give him up for the right price?
Personally no, but his best role is utility swing man and he wants to play forward. He might want to explore other opportunities.
Carlton was rumoured to be offering a high-ish pick for him last year, he's got a year on his contract, Top 10 draftee...

Parolee thinks he's SOS wanting a seventh round pick for Tommo.

He's just not any good though Ellie.

Anything near the first round for him and we are making off like thieves.

Nice to have you back Parolee, think you are a bit harsh on Tommo. He has attributes that will make him attractive to Vic clubs. I agree his time at the Giants is coming to an end.

You don't like parting with "the originals" but we have given him so many chances.

I feel we should've taken Carlton's pick 10(?) last year.

His value this year I fear will be lower than McCarthy's.

why isnt he good though?
can play multiple positions and is quick and agile
I think he's being played out of his best suited position at AFL level. The Giants would like to play him in defence but there are others ahead of him.
I call CHB...
He would be a cheep trade & would have a big upside if it works

Giants only interested in future picks

So, the end of year trade and draft discussion seems to have cranked up to fever pitch early this year ...

For GWS, we have to reduce the main squad size by 4 over the next 3 years. Then, need to reduce the list by the number of draftees taken - that's a total of 13 off the list over the next 3 years if only the minimum 3 taken each year, 16 if 4 per year are taken.

By my estimation, there are 5 likely retirements over that period, plus 2 possible: Patfull, Johnson, Mumford, Griffen, Shaw (perhaps might have another year or 2, but the cost is a younger player) and Mohr and Palmer. They will all be over 30, and therefore their benefit over a younger kid needs to be carefully assessed. That would leave a cull of players to the tune of 6 (@ 3 draftees per year) to 9 (@ 4 draftees per year). I really believe that we need to keep the departures to a minimum - continually turning over players doesn't help keep a stable team. For that reason, I hope that we only draft 3-4 each year, based on needs. However, high levels of talent competing for spots and salary cap constraints will keep some pressure on guys to leave if they feel opportunity beckons elsewhere. Hopefully we can (mostly) keep the guys we really want, and gracefully allow those on the fringes to depart and get more opportunity. Realistically, though, a major loss every other year is probably likely, and survivable. I'd like to see us get a reasonable trade for everyone though. With our 'banded' list size, we do have some flexibility on how many we carry on the list each year, which we should use to ensure we hit 2019 with the list in the shape we want.

The next two years seems to have a good crop of academy kids coming through, obviously assessments will be continuously updated until each draft time.
2016: KPD Harrison Macreadie, outside mid Will Setterfield, KPF Zach Sproule, outside mid Kobe Mutch, mid Connor Byrne are the highest rated at the moment. Others include: utility mid Harry Perryman having a good run of form recently, KPF Max Lynch & Ruck/Fwd Todd Marshall getting press recently after returning from other sports to AFL, halfback Tom Highmore, mid-sized fwd Jacob Turner.
2017: small fwd/mid Charlie Spargo, KPF Jarred Brander, ruck Nathan Richards, inside mid Jack Rolls (just for inamedthegiants, he looks like Adam Treloar, supports Collingwood & idolises Scott Pendlebury), and KPP Alex Paech are the prominent names at the moment.

We will get an assessment of the talent in the upcoming 2016 U18 National Championships:
Round 1 – NSW/ACT U18 Rams v Queensland Saturday May 8 (11am) – Blacktown International Sportspark, Sydney
Round 2 – NSW/ACT U18 Rams v Tasmania Saturday May 14 (12:15pm) – Blundstone Arena, Hobart
Round 3 – NSW/ACT U18 Rams v Northern Territory Sunday May 22 (1:30pm) – Metricon Stadium, Gold Coast

I hope we don't lose Caleb Marchbank as I rate him highly, but can't fault him if he does feel homesick and doesn't believe he can work through it. Others either under pressure or who might jump for opportunity for mine would be: Simpson, McKenna, Barrett, Stewart, Tomlinson. Perhaps WHE. Don't really want to lose originals, but pressure is on now to perform and it would help the age spread. McCarthy to leave this year or next of course. Not sure of Ahern after his wretched injury this year. 9 names here - don't actually 'want' to lose many, if any, of these, but have to lose some. And if not these, then we're losing guys we really want to keep. Unfortunately GWS is going to need to be clear-headed and hard-headed, but I hope they don't cut too heavily.

The players up for draft over the next couple of years have a good balance across roles, except perhaps KPD & rebounding defender, depending on whether those named as mids can slot back there. KPFs probably well covered - we got HH last year to cover McCarthy, and Sproule & Brander would cover if Tommo & Stewart left for opportunity. We are well-stocked in mids, so not sure where Setterfield, Mutch, Byrne, Perryman, Spargo & Rolls all fit, except at the back of the queue!

It will be interesting to see how GWS handle it in the 2016 draft - I won't be surprised if we pass on a couple of guys taken fairly high. Hopefully we'll also rookie list one or two of these guys.

Great write-up!

Might have to see if I can get a leave pass for this one.

Great write up sadly 2016 is the last year we will get Riverina in our catchment for the academy. It has not been announced yet but has been decided we can thank not only the bleating from the Vic clubs (1 be expected) but the untold story is the swans have been complaining just as loudly (behind closed doors) that we are doing nothing in western Sydney and cherry picking. I'm very disappointed (involved in some way) as the jump in young kids making it to afl clubs has undoubtedly increased since the implementation of the academy.

Terribly short sighted decision for the growth of afl.

Dislike button.

Its pathetic really. The same crybabys about the academies will now go back to complaining about the size of the talent pool being to small for 18 teams.

The 4 northern clubs are really here to be seen and not heard arent they. [emoji35]

Heh "go back".

They're going to complain about whoever the next top 10 talent any of us get now instead.
