Marchbank and OUR first and Geelong's first for their pick 5 and third/fourth rounder seems fair. They can use those 2 late first rounders to trade back up again.

IF Tomlinson wants to go to blues as well with Marchbank then pick 5 and a swap of second rounders would be fair also.

So 17, 18 and pick 6 (Marchbank) for pick 5? Could get that deal done with either ours or geelongs first but wouldn't need to throw in both.

Carlton are the ones chasing Marchbank - Giants aren't chasing pick 5

That would be a terrible trade. Giving away way too much. Never going to happen.

I love the idea of Bruest, and guess we have the currency if the desire is there. Hawks board thought Kelly and Wiĺliams a fair trade, which obviously aint gunna happen.

I suspect Hawthorn won't be looking for players but rather picks if Breust is traded to the Giants. They will likely be losing players to the suns if the O'meara trade goes through.

That kinda works, Hopefully Collingwoods first rounder. Even if I beleived Kelly and Wiĺliams were trade bait, and I dont, then I'm not sure I wouldn't be kicked of the Giants board for suggesting it would be ok.

Would you be happy with

Pick 22 & Pick 25

For

Pick 17 & WHE?

The pick 22 comes from perhaps packaging Witts and Oxley who they seem quite keen on.

Charlie Spargo looking very good in the TAC Cup grand final. (Academy boy for 2017) Small forward, puts lots of defensive pressure on. Get excited for the academy intake for this year and next year.

Do we need to trade in any mature player's to take the next step winning the premiership or should we just back in the guy's we already have?

GC have 2 firsts and 4 seconds

not like we are the only team doing it and they wont lose to majority of the picks to academy boys either so more gun victorians, south australians and west australians heading up north

So, playing year now over, time to think about trading and drafting. As I see it:
  • With the low injury toll at the end of the year, pretty much the QF team is our best 22 at this point (Cameron, Patton, Lobb, Johnson, Smith, Greene, Mumford, Ward, Coniglio, Shiel, Whifield, Scully, Davis, Haynes, Tomlinson, Shaw, Wilson, Williams, Griffen, Hopper, Kelly, Patfull).
  • Of those, 12 are contracted beyond 2017, 8 are contracted to end of 2017, and just Johnson & Patfull have contracts ending this year - those 2 have been offered another year before (presumably) retiring.
  • Spots up for future grabs IMO (leaving aside injuries) would be Tomlinson (can he hold his spot?), Patfull (likely to be replaced during the year) & Johnson (replacement by end of year).
  • Therefore, we're in pretty good shape going forward - just need to think about locking in some of those 8 (Patton, Lobb, Smith, Shiel, Williams, Kelly, Hopper & Tomlinson) with end-of-2017 contracts - the issue would of course be the TPP cap but also how they see the GWS future.
  • Of that 22, there's been some chat about teams trying to pinch Lobb primarily, Tomlinson of course, Patton & Smith. Of those, only Lobb worries me to a great extent. Thinking about the lessons from the McCarthy situation, do we hold him & try to convince him he has a flag future here, or take his pulse and if inevitably going to lose him try to cash in as hard as we can in 2016 trading year? (Personally - hold him, he's structurally important for our flag tilt in 2017, I don't see him doing a Sunshine, and I think his value will grow in 2017 even if he elects to leave then. If he went, we would be short an option for third tall and relief ruck; Stewart seemingly important to hold then but not as good.)
  • So the interest in the trade & subsequent draft field mainly revolves around the seconds (unsurprisingly).
  • Those out of contract now are: Stewart, Finlayson, Simpson, Steele, Mohr, Downie, McKenna, Barrett & of course, Marchbank has already requested trade. Add in some conjecture about WHE, and that's 10 possible departures (presuming both Johnson & Patfull remain for another year). Palmer might be the only other one - suspect he's just about making up the numbers now.
  • 42 less 10 would require 8 additions to make the required minimum 40 main list for next year, although if Reid & Lloyd were elevated, it would only be 6, and not necessarily all draftees. I would think that the likely span would be 6 to 10; if on the higher side then there would be a couple of players traded in.
  • Trade in options for mine would be a ruck (if both Simpson & Downie move or are moved on) and potentially the hard-tackling medium forward mentioned by the recruiting manager. Perhaps Breust if Hawthorn need currency and we're prepared to pay more for him than Sydney or Gold Coast as part of their likely trades.
  • Draft options would include: academy options Setterfield, Perryman (first round pick requirements) and then it appears hazy: Macreadie, Sproule & Mutch all possibilities but not IMO certainties. Non academy options seem to centre around Andrew McGrath (as a running back replacement for Shaw) and Todd Marshall (a spindly forward). I'm certainly not sold on Marshall, especially the price that would be needed for him and the length of development required and uncertainty of outcome. However, whether GWS has a go at him might depend on whether GWS retain or lose Jarrod Brander from the academy program in the 2017 draft. Either of Marshall or McGrath would need an early first round pick; both would be highly problematic and likely to result in losing one if not both of Setterfield & Perryman. But what are the club's needs from the club's perspective?
  • Presuming McCarthy and Stewart are traded this year, we're actually short on backups for Jezza and the General, with both Finlayson (himself OOC in 2016) and Himmelberg recruited as KPFs but playing as KPDs, and then really no-one. Marshall and Sproule both look likely to take some time to develop, Brander (if we even retain access) would be a further year away. So some decisions on keeping Stewart &/or Finlayson and drafting a KPF are required.
  • We're suddenly flush for KPDs, with Davis & Haynes as first team locks, then Tomlinson, Corr & Himmelberg all in the mix as the other tall - with Mohr hopefully kept on as backup. Unfortunately injuries have cruelled him and he might be put out to masture, especially if Macreadie is coming.
  • The talk about McGrath is interesting. I would have said more akin to Williams than Shaw in size/role, but certainly as the Vic Metro captain his skill level, leadership and personal qualities are highly regarded and hence perhaps seen as the replacement rebounding defence organiser. Just need to ensure he's on the GWS wavelength WRT how much NEAFL time he gets and ensuring he'll stay for the long haul. Plus, he'll cost GWS to elevate picks in the draft near the top to get him. But, looking at the GWS list, after Shaw, Patfull, Williams & Wilson there's Buntine (who may replace Patfull), Adam Kennedy and McKenna.
  • We're pretty solid for midfielders, even if Steele and Barrett both move on for more opportunity. It would allow Matt Kennedy a rails run for Griffen's spot in the longer run, with Setterfield & Perryman probably coming in to battle it out also.
All in all, and interesting trade period coming up and then draft night from there.

Excellent summary

I doubt we will lose 10 players this offseason but in terms of players to trade in I would only really want bruest as a Johnson replacement.

Of the academy boys I would say the certainties are setterfield, perryman and macreadie(club has shown its hand with moving him to Sydney and I suspect he is taking it easy given his guarantee of being taken by us). Sproule and mutch are interesting options for us and will depend on the exits. If we lose all of McCarthy, Stewart, downie and Simpson then we certainly need to add some tall timber. Mutch is another accumulating midfielder but the likely loss of Steele and Barrett would give us a need to replace the loss of depth.

Byrne, fisher, lynch, garthwaite and Owen-Auburn would be late to rookie selections and would depend on list spots but I would prefer to remain under the maximum.

No need to elevate Reid and Lloyd at this stage as they are providing cheap mature depth for us.

Palmer is solid depth but wow he was infuriating in the prelim
