We could end up with 13 for marchbank if/when the Gibbs trade goes through, close to a straight swap?

As in we swap 23 and 36 for 13? Very close to equal points I think there. Guess it depends on who we think we can get at 13. It's supposedly a very top 30-40 after the top 8 or so players. But then we would have people saying that after swapping 10 for two picks in the top 40.

NORTH Melbourne is expected to secure Greater Western Sydney midfielder Paul Ahern as early as Monday as the club begins injecting its ageing team with young talent.

The Herald Sun understands the Roos will finalise the deal for the classy ball-winner in exchange for pick No.69.

Geez, I know that Ahern is injured and out for a year (and with 2 reconstructions may never fulfil his promise), but that's a massive loss of investment. I can't see that his one year extension would create a massive need to dump his salary, and would prefer to hold onto him and see what he can do in future. I realise that there's a bunch of issues running around here - including a likely desire from him to get back to Melbourne in the circumstances - so I guess this is mainly GWS being charitable. Good luck to him anyway, I hope that he can get himself fit and crack a first grade spot in the future.

Salary dump it seems. He is on over $300k P.A good luck to him in his recovery and I hope he achieves his potential.

SOS had the worst last draft for us it seems

With hopper, Kennedy, setterfield, perryman, etc he is so far behind the pecking order. We even lost Steele to our strength in the 22. His loss hurts but in the big picture I'd rather lose him and keep Shiel, Kelly, cogs, smith, Williams, ect

Yep, I get where he sits, and the 2 years of injury effectively nullifies his first year, so it would be like starting in 2018 as a newbie. The surprising thing for me, if correct, is his salary. And if Pickett is on similar coin the TPP squeeze is partly an own goal. Of course, the sudden drop in salary cap this year rather than in 2018 (which should have been a year after they were due to come out of their first extended contract) probably hurts as well. In the end, the injuries have been the killer for Ahern - had he been injury free and cracking first grade he would have either stayed or been traded for better return.

But it still hurts, pick 7 into 69. That's 2 first round picks gone for effectively nothing; potentially 3 if Pickett goes as well. The trading team need to hold the line to get something worthwhile for Marchbank.

Pickett extended his contract just before Ahern did, completely ridiculous we are giving guys that havent played a game $300k contracts. No wonder the young players around the league are carrying on like spoilt brats and making demands like they are superstars. We need to clear out anybody on deals like that, need to instill a culture of earning your paypacket, if some walk because of it so be it, when players in the firsts are turning down better money to stay you cant have players yet to debut taking up so much cap.

Their contracts aren't loaded evenly each year... it might just be that his was back ended and this year was a little more than other years

Who knows

It's an extra year on a rookie contract, so literally the first two years are mandated by the CBA and you can only negotiate the third year and later, i.e. this $300k year.

100%, makes a mockery of the draft.
We had better not waste pick 2 this year on anyone with even the slightest hint of being a homeboy from another state

I'm not convinced this was driven by Ahern. I think this was a club-driven thing which Ahern said "sure, I get to go back to Victoria" to, which is why I'm very much not a fan. Most likely related to the list reduction I reckon, but that doesn't mean we have to run a damn fire sale.

3 years ago SOS and Gubby were geniuses, a lot of what they did has gone wrong since they left

It's pretty obvious SOS prioritised needs and ignored go home worries when drafting. I can't blame him for Pickett and Ahern, but can for JOR, Plowman and Marchbank. I think he let all those early draft picks go to his head after his early success.

Gubby is a funny one. He has a similar history with Brisbane - get a talented list, hold on to it, then jump ship right before the salary cap squeeze explodes. Three years ago we were in stage 2. Now we'll see how bad stage 3 is, and if the drastic steps we appear to be taking this offseason is enough to cauterize the damage. The Collingwood FA moves this year have his fingerprints all over it.

I'll be very interested to see how our new staff handle all of this going forward.
