As per Dlanod's post, my understanding is that GWS can take any of the GWS-academy listed kids who don't get selected in the ND in the rookie draft as Category B rookies. So, Sam Fisher a possibility there I would think - would keep a Canberra kid on the books.

ACADEMY PLAYERS – ROOKIE PRE-SELECTION

Like father-son players, under the previous AFL rules, Academy players were subject to a bidding system before the National Draft if they were nominated by an eligible club but could not be pre-selected by that club before the Rookie Draft.

Clubs with Academy programs – the Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast Suns, Sydney Swans and GWS Giants – should have the chance to pre-select local talent from the pool of players in their Academy between the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts if those players nominated for but were not selected at the most recent National or Pre-Season Drafts.

The amendment is designed to create incentives for Academy clubs to develop talent by providing opportunities for them to rookie list players for further development.

Only draft-eligible club Academy players who were nominated by their club at the designated time and played in the National Championships are eligible to be pre-selected as a Category B rookie.

We also get a dip for our rookie zone selections.

From the CBA:

Category B – includes former NSW or International Scholarship players with that Club, Academy players (only with respect to Sydney Swans, Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast Suns and GWS Giants), International Rookies (including 1 x Irish), Non-Registered or not Played for 3 Years, Sydney and Queensland Based Clubs and Alternate Talent Players.

From the AFL Rules:

10.4 NSW and Queensland Based Clubs
(a) A Club which is based in the New South Wales or Queensland area may include a Player or Players on its Rookie List during the period between the conclusion of the Pre-Season Draft Selection Meeting and the commencement of the Rookie Draft Selection Meeting, by lodging with the AFL the form prescribed in Schedule 1 as Form 34 provided that the following requirements are fulfilled:
(i) the Player must not have previously been listed on a Rookie List or Primary List;
(ii) the Player must be resident in New South Wales or the Australian Capital Territory in the case of a Club based in New South Wales or Queensland in the case of a Club based in the Queensland, and have been so resident for a continuous period of 3 years immediately prior to the date on which he is included;
(iii) by the date nominated by the AFL prior to the Pre-Season Draft Selection Meeting, the Club must provide to the AFL written evidence of the Club’s and Player’s agreement to be listed as a Rookie. That agreement must specify that the Player can and will only be listed on the Club’s Rookie List if he is not selected by any Club at the PreSeason Draft Selection Meeting; and
(iv) if the Player is ultimately included on the Club’s Rookie List, the Club and the Player must, as soon as is practicable, enter into a Contract of Service and lodge that and any other requested documents with the AFL.

By the looks of this we are going to get bitten, its just whether it happens this year or next.

Given we've given up so much to move up the order I think its imperative to us that this draft is unaffected.

If we lost pick 2 it would be a disgrace as we would effectively be losing multiple picks given what we have had to give up. If it happens next year we can at least prepare for it.

Caro still claiming losing draft picks isn't on the cards, but either way I would rather no decision until after Nov 25.

Well, that finally explains what the 'registration issue' was. Typical boy! :p
I'm not convinced he's going to make it, but best of luck to him as a NSW kid whoever he joins. Maybe not so much the team he joins though.
Happy for another club to take the punt. We can look to bring him back to NSW if he proves to be a star:D

Glad the resigning have finally been announced, and does that leave 8 list spots open?
That seems like a lot to take in the one draft unless they are looking to have the option to upgrade a rookie for the start of the season. I would guess the club would have an indication of where bids will come in for players and will have factored that into the list management but i am still surprised with the number of list spots. Although with the announcement of the re-singings of the 3 talls that could be an indication that Sproule is not a priority and that HH and Jezz#2 will be playing forward in the reserves with a resting ruck man. i will also speculate the Tiziani could be a late pick after the club chose to nominate him again and his late season form seems to have been solid

Unfortunately none of those re-signings are a key forwards butt hole. We may also lose brander for next year so I think it is far too risky to overlook a 197cm KPF

Would like to see HH get a run in the firsts playing as a tall forward for a handful of games, as I see him as having great potential and we do need to play the 2/3 year players to achieve the age spread of the list and also if we are seen to have playing opportunities it may reduce the list turnover of the last few years

The registration issue is quite technical. Nothing the Giants could have done differently.

Still as he wasn't closely connected to the academy at any point it seems like an acceptable outcome
Indeed, I'd prefer we gained access via genuine ongoing engagement and investment, not via postcode, that way the players are already inside the club embrace prior to drafting.

A bit of a discussion on this a couple of pages back. My belief is that our list size requirement is 38 to 40 - as per the standard AFL list - so that leaves 6 to 8 spots open. My view would be that we will aim for that 6 spots rather than 8, with the 11 picks we're allowed being eaten up by matching higher picks. It will depend on where other clubs' bids for academy guys come in as to what the actual makeup of those 6 is.

As I see it:
pick #2 goes on McGrath/McCluggage/Ainsworth
Setterfield gets bid on around 5 or 6 and uses picks #15 & #37 (with a residual lower pick)
Perryman gets bid on around 10 and uses picks #39, #45, #52 & #55 (with a residual lower pick)

That's three, with only picks #57, #58, #59, #60 and two lower residual picks left. (Plus some movement of picks to earlier in the order due to the academy clubs' picks getting used.) This is where the draft/recruitment team earn their keep, assessing who's the best out of Macreadie, Mutch, Sproule, Cumming & Garthwaite for GWS' needs, as I can't see all of Macreadie, Mutch & Sproule can be drafted unless bid very late. Worst case, a late first round blows most of the remaining points. You'd hope more likely, bids around #25 and #30 could be matched for two of Macreadie, Mutch & Sproule, and leave enough points to match a bid around mid 40s, which could be Cumming or Garthwaite.

That gives 6 draftees. If GWS wanted to go to a list size of 40, then it depends on points and bids for possibly also adding Tiziani & Fisher, or upgrading one or both the rookies Reid & Lloyd. Potentially a more interesting draft night for us than last year's fairly straightforward approach. (I guess we'll see how wrong I can be! :straining: )

Im still for Mcgrath or Mccluggage, matching Setterfield and not matching Perryman if he goes early and getting Macreadie Mutch Sproule and one or even two of the other guys

Why not take them all?

Seriously, though, I hope that the real ND goes similarly to the BF draft https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/big-footy-2016-phantom-draft.1151499/.
Perryman not bid until #19 & Mutch next at #31. By my very quick calculations, that would allow Perryman & Mutch for less than the price of Perryman alone in my example above - and with bidding now in the 30s, I would reckon that Sproule and Macreadie are easily gettable. Should therefore be theoretically able to get Cumming or Garthwaite too I'd think.

Just demonstrates that GWS is really at the mercy of where other clubs see our academy kids - a recruiter could take a fancy and bid out of proportion to everyone else, or otherwise everyone goes meh! because he's academy. I presume that GWS will have built some sort of calculator and do some dummy runs to get a sense of how they should play scenarios. The problem is, if your 5th rated kid is bid early before three & four - do you match? Because they could slide, and allow you to get all three, or they could be bid the two immediately next picks and blow a lot of points!
