The contract figures for band 1 & 2 at the time weren't that steep.

Well the amounts remain undisclosed due to the AFL's 11 secret herbs and spices recipe. Daisy was widely accepted as being worth band one due to believed contract worth, draft pick number, age and potential output. Eddie was a step down on this, even though he has produced more for the Crows.

If the information were freely available, clubs would be doing handshake agreements over an extra 25k per year on certain players so everyone's happier on compensation.

The best way to fix that is what the NFL do, and make the net free agency compensation minimal (third round), and rely on trades to sort things out, and player tags if anyone is low-balling significantly.

It baffles me a little, that the league introduces rule changes based largely on the American system, but then takes no notice of the evolution to those rules that have taken place over decades, such as the draft lottery and as with free agency. This picking and choosing of compensation is far too flawed.

Rookie draft pick, small forward only, no AAs(then), moderate contract. Wouldn't have got band one.

$2,000,000 over 4 years is a pretty good contract. Twice Carlton leading goal kicker and twice made the 30 man All Australian squad. 184 games for the Blues for around 280 goals, i think it would of been a close call

We weren't in the AFLs 'special needs' category for compensation, wouldn't have happened.

And to think Betts left because the club wouldn't come to the party and pay him an extra 50k a season over 3 years...

Betts was going, end of story. Decision was made barely half way through the season. The healthy contract offered by the Crows was a contributing factor, but not the main factor.

That was not the case. He wanted to stay. And extra 50k was all he wanted and the club treated him poorly.

Fact of the matter is betts tried used the contract offered to him by adelaide to leverage more money out of us. Of course he wanted to stay as long as the money was right.
The value of a player is determined by whose willing to pay the most for him. Betts didn't just wake up one day and thought to himself I'm worth 500k (or what ever the figure is) just as much as tom boydd woke up and said I'm worth a million dollars.
From a career prospective betts made the right decision on all fronts. He's playing career best footy (or at least getting noticed for it) he's endeared himself to his new fans he lives in a city that is cheaper to live in and his club is more successful than the one he used to play for.

A poor effort by the club in the end. We are crying out for goal kickers. And we were not willing to give him what he was worth.
And on top of that the club want your membership money!

I've posted this in the Injury Thread but since there's NO DISCUSSION ALLOWED in there:

Judging by the size of that jumper I am tipping the stress fracture was caused by him trying to fit the ****ing thing on!!
