Also, I wish our players would shut up about the pay dispute. In the last week I've heard Rories Atkins and Sloane make comments.

They pay a handsome sum of money to the AFLPA. I assume that Pavlich, Dangerfield and co are paid a sum for their involvement in the exec.

Let them be the ones to tarnish their name in their amateurish pursuit of "fairness". I know media will bring it up, just pad it away. That's what you pay your union for.

They are being used by their AFLPA.

Atkins was asked a question in the press conference specifically about it by a journalist and his reply is that we haven't been briefed yet, but that should happen later in the week. Until then, he said, he would wait for more information. I suspect that Sloane was asked as well.

This is what Atkins said

"Hopefully it gets done in the near future so it doesn't get to that point," Atkins said of strike action, which has been mooted for the pre-season competition rather than premiership season.

"If it does, I'm behind what all the players want to do.

"We're completely behind everything that they (the association) are doing. They are doing it for us and we're backing everything that they're doing."

Who cares if he was asked by a journalist. He's under no obligation to answer it. They're trained to fob off questions and spout cliches like they're going out of fashion.

Fair enough Sloane if he's on the board.

The players dont have a strong case at all and Thomas shows he is as dumb as he looks. Gil is on less money than high powered execs from around the world. If the public demand the execs are paid less then it will be run by Monkeys and be run likely by even more amateurish fan boys than it is now. The problem is if you want the best, you have to offer the best $$$$. The players should take the 10% and run imo. Thats above CPI increases and still acceptable in the real world. Whats to say that if the AFL caves into the 20% demand that in 5 years when the next rights deal is up the players dont demand 30%. Whats been allowed to come into the sport is the Americanisation of thinking around a players worth. Its all good when their is several $Billion in revenue generated by not just the clubs but by the league itself in TV rights. Local sport is struggling and needs cash injections. Players should be taught to invest their earnings rather then the sports cars and the huge house on the beach. Oh right, they are AFL players, they deserve to waste their money.

Wtf are you talking about?

You compare the executives to other executives but don't compare what the players make to other sports?

This is an absolutely foolish post.

Do you think the players are only 20% of the game? They ARE the game. There was a massive increase in revenue and the players deserve their share. It shouldn't just go to middle management.

Reduced crowds
Team gone rogue with supplement saga
Brisbane basket case
Couldn't get teams to relocate and bastardised competition by introducing 2 more teams
Coach done for tanking but not club
Took over a year to act on Whitfield and only then once busted
Academy picks leading to draft manipulation

The list goes on, the game is growing inspite of the AFL because Australians love Aussie rules but they would love it more if ****heads weren't running it

Reduced cross because the big sides did poorly.

Everything else is just operational fine print. Minor points that would barely matter and nothing to do with an executive board. They are there for strategic thinking.

Membership is up. Viewership is up. Profitability is up.

These are what matters. They'd be getting massive ticks.

I like this, because Geelong will hate it.

Could be bad news for Blicavs, will Geelong still play him in the midfield when he won't have his #1 trick?

Bit like how like the changes to stop ruckman marking the ball at the throw-in took away Brendan Lade's #1 trick and turned him into a very average ruckman, ending his career.

The change had to be made, it was stupid that a ruckman could hold the opposition ruckman to the ground without even attempting to go for the ball, knowing his team-mate would jump over the top unopposed and if anyone tried to block that player from jumping for the ball, they gave away a free kick.

Probably because the executives can go to other companies and get the same pay, the players can't go to other sports and expect the same pay. This means there is a market value you need to pay for the executives if you want to get and keep the right people for the job. The players are already in the best possible job they could get with their experience and talents, no one is poaching AFL players.

Can't wait to read his book...

Think we can safely say the Pies won the 3 way trade.

Hopefully he can find some inner peace in retirement & he doesn't become a spokesperson for anyone.

Helps us & Sauce, as we rarely go 3rd man up.

Difference is Gill can get a job as an executive somewhere else.

Patrick Dangerfield can't get a job in the NBA.

You can't compare them.

This is delicious.

...But how did fat Ollie have so many third man ups? Does he even get off the ground?

That goes the other way as well.

The AFL executives are highly replaceable.

AFL footballers have exclusive, elite skills.

Execs from other companies are not going to replace them if you pay under market value. If the players don't get an increase, they aren't going anywhere. Even If you dropped their average pay from $250k to $150k, they still have nowhere better to go that will pay them more.

If JJ could make the NFL or NBA he would be there in a heart beat, but he can't AFL, is the best he can do and if he was to try find another job, he would be taking a massive pay cut.

It could be the end of Hackson Trengove being any good in Ruck.

Ollie third up was a big help to him.

He might have to go back and pretend to defend with those menacing stares of his.

Think everyone will agree that when with the Crows, Dangerfield was a prolific 3rd man up .....but changes to Geelong & that aspect of his game has disappeared .....coached out of him?

Why would Dangerfield go third man up when you have Blicavs?

In most "global pro sports" the players get stratospheric amounts of money. Of course the executives aren't going to be paid like Messi or Ronaldo.

That's right they do.

So it was pretty silly for one of the usual suspects to assume it was normal for execs to earn more when it is very not normal

The players are underpaid here because some silly sausages still think their ticket prices pay for players
