I just think that it's a harsh way to announce it. 3 club greats and they get a "we're de-listing them" announcement? Surely Firrito and Petrie deserved to announce their own retirements??

And the Harvey decision is baffling considering he could go again.

This is the weird part, why announce it like this? Why now? Why not let them officially retire?
It makes sense to let the players know to expect now, and hope they perform for what could be there last games in a he final, but that information should be kept inside their club until after the season.

If available, which I doubt he will be....

Could we get Boomer?
I don't know why we'd want to but JJ was just in SEN and said that he'd have him at Adelaide. In jest I think.
It will be interesting to watch how North and Hawks go in the next few years with both clubs making opposing decisions re old players.

Because this week is highly likely to be their last game in Melbourne

There's a difference between what you need to do (ie bare minimum) and doing what is the best for the club. Adelaide made those decisions back then based on what they needed to do. Let's see if we have learnt why we haven't won a premiership for 18 years.
Once again, there is no difference. North are doing this because they have to. They have an aging list. They rolled the dice and went "all in" (apologies for the mixed metaphors) in 2016 - and they've come up well short. Now they have to cut their losses and start preparing for the future. This isn't about doing the best for the club, it's about cutting their losses and moving on - something they need to do.

Adelaide is a complete contrast. We will have one of the youngest teams in the finals this year. There is no need or imperative to cut players prematurely.

North currently have 9x players aged 30+. Adelaide have just 2 - and one of them hasn't played an AFL game in months. Huge difference in the list demographics, and thus a huge difference in priorities.

Obviously the players didn't want to retire ... And imagine the supporter outrage at not being allowed to send the 4 North Melb players off in what might be their last game

Timing was unfortunate, but correct
