Draft Review 2016 - Revisiting the 2016 AFL Draft

I still think McGrath will end up being the best player from this draft.

Incredibly happy with Taranto, but I think McGrath will win a Brownlow by the end of his career.

Hope so mate, Once we hit some form and start to play as a team McGrath will shine, I saw some good signs on Sunday even though he was sloppy by foot.

He was one of the few who busted their ass and he kept trying in the last quarter, He's our next captain no doubt.

10 coaches votes for H.Mcluggage from only 20 touches on the weekend. He certainly is creative when he gets it.

I think he can be a little inconsistent by foot though (he's not a bad kick, just occasionally misses a target he shouldn't).

I think the Nigel Lappin comparison is a good one actually.

J.Berry is an interesting one, i read some people comparing him to a Fyfe or a P.Cripps style of footballer. But i don't agree. I think he is more of a taller Joel Selwood type.

They are a great one-two combo though, as both are creative midfielders that can play on the inside and outside. With Berry better on the inside and Mcluggage better on the outside.

I'd argue Brisbane potentially have picked 3 of the top 4 players of this draft in Mcluggage (1st or 2nd), Berry (3rd) and Witherden (4th).

Jack Bowes starting to look very good from this draft now that he's finally getting time on ball rather than at half back. Was very influential against Fremantle. 24.5 touches (11.5 contested) @75% DE average from the first 2 games this year so far.

Cant see the gap getting much closer than it is now tbh. Taranto and McSuitcase are something special.

Its a hard one as a Dockers supporter since we could have had one of them but we got so many best 22 players out of dropping out of pick 3 that its a trade we would have to do again

You'd have Taranto for sure.

Geez we absolutely won this draft by a mile.

Clugga (3), Berry (17), Witherden (23), Cox (24), The Big O (Pick 37 Rookie Draft).

I get that we all toot our own team's horn in threads like this but I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out. Benny Long (pick 25), new backman Josh Battle (pick 39) and our new #1 ruck Rowan Marshall (rookie draft pick 10) have all played roles in our flying start this year.

McGrath is showing signs of becoming a really good player. Now that he's hitting the scoreboard as well, a true goalkicking mid, his value is just getting exponential.

I'm so excited by what's ahead for Pigeon
Still very much a part of the big 3 still, best is yet to come for him, Taranto and McCluggage

SPS climbing up the 2016 draft power rankings, especially with today's career best performance.

Should walk away with a few handy players when you get four picks in a top 25.
Well we did have 5 picks walk away just a few years prior.

Yep. Saints have done very well. Like battle and Marshall particularly.

Could have had parfitt and Stewart instead of long and battle

5th first round bust for us in three years. Could have drafted Taranto and Oliver and we still would have found a way to play them out of position and ruin their career. Oliver might have been our new full back.
Seeing Melbourne drafted Oliver at pick 3 and we never actually got the chance to take him anyway it seems like a rubbish comment to be honest.

Happy with how this draft has worked out for Hawthorn so far considering we entered it post pick 70.

Harry Morrison has become a regular part of the lineup.

James Cousins has stepped up this year.

Mitch Lewis has been good at Box Hill and is being rewarded by an inclusion into the side this week.

Oliver Hanrahan has showed signs of being a good footballer both in JLT and for Box Hill.

Jack Fitzpatrick was solid for us. He won us a a game against Collingwood so I’m happy with that.

The first three are all playing today against Geelong. We obviously aren’t among those with the strongest draft but for the cards we had going into the draft I’d say we did well.

they're gonna be the best top 3 from a draft since Hodge, Ball and Judd.

.

I think it will be Walsh, Lukosius and Rankine myself (and that's no slight on the 2016 kids, whom i rate highly) but Walsh is already looking like the best first year player since Jelwood in 07, and I think the Suns kids will be jets as well)

At the moment Walsh has Selwoods first year covered by a fair margin.

Selwood broke into the midfield of what was to become a triple premiership team, and was no passenger that year
Walsh has broke into the midfield of a team reliant on Cripps to win the ball and sits 1-4.

A fair margin?
