Draft Review 2016 - Revisiting the 2016 AFL Draft

While the number 1 pick is all but sewn up by Bolton unfortunately, feels like a draft where the number 2 is going to be a debate for some long careers.

After Bolton you could throw a blanket over all of Darcy, Taranto, McCluggage and Stewart as it stands IMO

No way is Bolton ahead of McLuggage or Taranto.

edit noticed that post was somehow in jest. My mistake:)

I dont think you understand, blaisee is very fair and totally not biased, I trust his opinion, the number 1 spot has been settled

Just noticed that your post was in jest.

I don't even think Bolton has gone past McGrath yet

If the RD's included, R. Marshall and Henry can lay claims to contending for the top spot too.

I'm not sure I could put them in the same group yet, but maybe I'm biased with Darcy. If you're including Henry I'd be including Luke Ryan who has an AA, but I dont think he's in that group.

Luke Ryan's quality but not quite near as good as Stewart.

FWIW, if I were to rank Freo's effort in 2016:

Darcy.
Ryan.
Cox.
Logue.

Yeah I agree, he's not in that group, just saying that I couldnt rate Henry higher than Ryan so you'd have to include him.

Yeah, your rankings spot on and funny how its basically the lowest draft picks being the best performed

Logue was an odd pick for Freo at the time, don't think it was a gamble that has worked tbh.

To be fair, Logue's had a shit run with injuries so ranking him is bloody hard.

I'm not sure, I feel like there's just one more level he needs to get to before I'd say that.

He was named to the AA team. Not sure there is any more levels that he can reach (unless winning the brownlow, which I think is definitely possible with him)

Funny thing is there is a whole heap of meh from 4 to 10 in the draft. Logue could end up being the best of that lot.

I remember hearing we were pretty keen on Simpkin as well, would have been a clearly better choice

Simpkin flies under the radar a bit because he plays for a currently struggling team

Defintlry has to be In the top 4 or 5 in this discussion.

Only 1 player from this draft has 3 AA jumpers with only injury preventing a 4th.
He's also 6 years older than most and will probably play at least 100 less games then some of his competition for top spot. It will count against him when it's all said and done

And he'll still more than likely end his career with more AA's than any player in his draft class.

I agree though I think if Darcy's body holds up he'll end up with quite a few - just the nature of handing out ruck AAs. I dont think anyone here thinks Stewart isnt part of the group that comes in behind the almighty Shai Bolton but to put the age difference in perspective, I think the majority of the draft class are just now hitting the age Stewart was when drafted.

It will hurt his general ranking when in another 6 years, he's retired and others are just getting to his current age

thanks mate,

In turn you are a terrific example as to how a moderator should interact, congratulations

Really adding to the conversations
Friend, I am having very constructive conversations with everyone else not coming in here posting bogus statements.

Additionally, the point of this sub board, per the sub board rules is to allow a bit more banter and jest then normally allowed

I wouldn't associate reaching another level with accolades.

I'm more thinking elevating himself from being one of a handful in the Lions midfield to being 'the guy' - a top 10 player in the league as opposed to 20-55.

He's capable of it, but until such a time as he does that, I find it hard to say he's the clear number 1 pick in a redraft (which isn't to say he wouldn't go 1 right now).

One thing he can do is nail his shots on goal if he continues to play the majority of his time on the wing, restricting his ability to collect 30+ possessions a game. If he does that he becomes a 1.5 goal a game player, without spending any time 'resting' forward. Quite a unique player in that regard when combined with his ability to deliver the ball into the forward line as well.
