Draft Review 2016 - Revisiting the 2016 AFL Draft

they also voted Andrew Brayshaw #1 in the comp.
Also, valuable isn't best. but we're splitting hairs now.

I have a theory on this. That you can get high end picks that just think it will happen. Or their club takes them so high that they try to make them more than they are.
Whereas a later pick had to wait. Was borderline. Or even those that miss ND, have to work that bit harder. And it sets them up.

Also, the draft is done on the basis of their performance largely against kids their own size/development profile and some are bigger/ahead of the curve.
AFL can flatten that out. Hence, Stewart had an edge in being that little bit more ready.

It's why you need to weigh up best available talent v. best for the team at picks.
Perhaps McGrath was the best bet at #1. But with Parish and Merrett in the side already, we should have looked at a bigger mid.
digressing now though.

Valuable is superior to best :)

So I expect you'll never bring up shais AA in this thread again then? Perfect

Stewart is very impressive. And another AA is very good.

That said it's hard to take it serious when richo gets 100 odd goals and not given a gig

Well done to bolton for being named first 18. (forward of the ball. Not getting soft back line touches ) but I'd argue top5 MVP has more gloss imho.

I wonder what some of the many bolton haters make of it funny it's gone a bit quiet.

fair to say, your early call he's top 3 was on the money.

I'm probably slotting him into the #2 spot as is with a view he can become the best from the draft.

Bolton haters? I've never met one

Yeah it's a hell of a draft.

I'd go something like -

1. Bolton.
2. TT.
3. Clug.
4. Stewart.

But hard to go wrong and quality everywhere. Nice to see shai getting some love by his fellow players.

if I was to project a top 10 in about 3 years time; I'd go

1-Bolton
2-Stewart
3-English
4-Taranto
5-Darcy
6-Clug
7-Ridley
8-Todd Marshall
9-Daicos
10-Draper

Nuts to think you've then got the likes of Brodie, Scrimshaw, Ainsworth, Simpkin, Florent, Rowan Marshall, Brennan Cox, Zurhaar, Ladhams, Stengle, Lewis, Larkey, Lipinksi, Perryman and Bowes as well.

Bolton didn't win it.

Do players watch every game? Like the coaches at the game?

Some would some wouldn't. They have to do match reviews..

They play against him which has extra impact. The argument he's more than his stats and the eye test is important.

More than you or me talking on the webways anyway

Behind Clayton Oliver is a pretty good result.

So Brayshaw is now the equal of Dusty - and if he wins a second one is better? MVP is the way you rank players?

Brayshaw is a solid player so I'll just praise him.

It's a good question I have not much thought about it. I'd say you have to go with the heart and if you want more; b/f (ideally in a flag winning team) , a/a, stats, MVP etc.

To me as a n00B. to be rated your peers sounds pretty good. You can just say well done bolton instead of carrying on.

The guy tried to tell you the kid was a bit special then you rudly banned him

IMO coaches vote carry much more weight and reward consistent high performance.

I didn't ban anyone - although I did find it funny - just reward for terrible posting......

Posting that was right in the long haul. I was not thinking you, just generally. I like your posts :)

I agree , coaches votes are very good sign too. I'd argue dimma being a stoner makes it hard for bolton

Wow - that's a 1st - you think his votes are not accurate? What happens when for example - he gives 5 to Lynch and 4 to Prestia V the Hawks - the exact same as Mitchell?

Suspect it would also have to do with the different things players and coaches look for. I don't play AFL but do play a sport at the highest level offered by my state short of representative teams and also coach so will speak to my personal experiences.

In the team I play in we have a previous Australian representative and a player that is quite young and was ranked as the top player in that division. As a teammate I know that in a close game that it is these two most likely to "step up" and do something special to win us a game (one did in the semi final, the other did in the grand final). These are the two players that I frequently find myself thinking WOW. These are the two players (and the type of player) that if asked to vote on an award from a player's perspective I would choose between.

The person that won our internal award (as selected by officials within the club) was neither of these two. It was the player that performed his role every week superbly, that does it without fuss and without complaint. No complaints of how he's playing better than so and so, just shuts his mouth and does his role and encourages his teammates to do the same. He was asked to play multiple roles throughout the year and always did them well. The player that won our award for best player in the Grand Final (voted on by the same people) was of a similar type (actually played outside of his usual position on Grand Final day). This is the type of player that I would vote for if asked to do so from a coaches perspective.

It is important to note that it is the combination of these two types of players that make for truly successful teams. Individual games can be won by individual brilliance but it is rare for flags to be won on that. Likewise all successful teams need match winners, players that have the ability to change games within a short space of time.

Great post!!

Great post!!
Thanks, although I can't take all the credit.

Was something that was pointed out by our club president when a teammate questioned why the role player won the award instead of the star player in my presence and using me as an example.

hahaha are you seriously bringing up the 1996 AA team over sights?

You are a fool, Richo kicked 91 goals which was 23 less than Lockett and about 15 less than Dunstall.

The even funnier part is that Richardson did make the AA team on the bench and Dunstall missed out
