Probably easier to rank this draft in tiers, could throw a blanket over a few:

Tier 1:
Stewart
McCluggage
Taranto
Bolton

Tier 2:
Simpkin
English
R. Marshall
Darcy
Ryan
Ridley

Tier 3:
Daicos
Lewis
Brodie
Draper
Henry
Larkey

Tier 4:
McGrath
Cox
Parfitt
Florent
Logue
Berry
Powell-Pepper
McInerney
Lipinski
Fisher
I think Draper will end up top of tier 2.

3/4 of our ND picks from this draft have made the AA squad. Not bad.

Pick 38 - Darcy
Pick 41 - Cox
Pick 66 - Ryan
these kind of draft hauls are what really rounds out a list, I think back to 2009 when Melbourne had 1,2,14 and 18 and our first pick was 39 but we ended up Stratton, Suckilng and Duryea.

Suckling can't be included as he was a rookie elevation of which, 2009-2013 drafts had the recruiters reading out the rookie elevation names.

Suckling belongs to the 2006 class.

AFL coaches votes.

Miller 98
Oliver 98
Neale 92
Trac 89

Bolton 57

Coaches votes rewards consistency. Its what most posters have been saying.
Also worth noting that McCluggage was on 57 equal with Bolton.

It helps when you can miss a quarter of the season with suspension and still get selected over Sicily who was statistically the best defender (key or general, take your pick) in the comp and put together one of the most impressive seasons ever by a defender.

He played 17 games and helped his team finish top of the ladder. He is a gun and deserved his spot.

Most impressive season ever is the most bias post ever.

4 weeks =/= quarter of season. But regardless he's good enough to get in despite missing a handful of games - people acting surprised that the best player in the best team two games clean on top somehow found his way in to the AA side will never not be funny.

All Australian team selection is about impact players had on the game and as such solely using statistics can be misleading. Defenders playing in lower sides will get more opportunities to rank higher in statistical areas because generally speaking if a team is losing it means the opposition are creating more scoring opportunities and thus defenders have more opportunity to accumulate stats. Sicily did have an excellent year but it terms of impact they had on matches, Stewart beats him. Statistics are useful, but they don't tell the full story.

Yes, impact a player has on the game is somewhat influenced by opportunities and the players around him, but that is the same for all team sports. In close decisions on selection, especially in attacking and defensive roles, I would expect the player that plays in the team that finishes higher to get the nod more often than not, particularly when there is such a large difference in ladder positions. This is because the role of the intercept defenders these days is more to start an attacking chain for their own team than to end the attacking chain of the opposition which Stewart does better because the players around him allow him to do it better. There is also too big a difference in 'good Sicily' to 'not so good Sicily' to include him over Stewart for mine.

Whether he should have been selected or not because of games doesn’t bother me, he was easily at an AA level this year.

He is by far and away the best player from this draft, I was on the clug and Taranto train at different stages but even taking in to consideration he is older so you will get less prime years out of him I think he has to go 1 in a redraft. Most players in the draft would struggle to catch him if he retired today.

Best defender in the league

Bolton 3rd in the MVP

Might want to hold your horses with such comments.
4x AA defender.
ill hold no horses. Stewart is the best of the bunch at the moment.

Bolton is probably 2nd for me though. Gone past the original top 3 in my estimation.
That said, I reckon a full year from English could shake things up.

It's crazy that the #1 and #2 seed for a retrospective redraft at this point were picks 42 and 25ish

3rd best in the world as voted by coworkers.

Stewart is alright but yeah
they also voted Andrew Brayshaw #1 in the comp.
Also, valuable isn't best. but we're splitting hairs now.

I have a theory on this. That you can get high end picks that just think it will happen. Or their club takes them so high that they try to make them more than they are.
Whereas a later pick had to wait. Was borderline. Or even those that miss ND, have to work that bit harder. And it sets them up.

Also, the draft is done on the basis of their performance largely against kids their own size/development profile and some are bigger/ahead of the curve.
AFL can flatten that out. Hence, Stewart had an edge in being that little bit more ready.

It's why you need to weigh up best available talent v. best for the team at picks.
Perhaps McGrath was the best bet at #1. But with Parish and Merrett in the side already, we should have looked at a bigger mid.
digressing now though.
