2016 trade hypotheticals

Depends how much of Deledio's salary Richmond are paying.

On his own, the Geelong pick would probably do it.

If they are paying a chunk of his salary going forward, then GWS' other trade currency (possibly including Steele) comes into play.

I think he was on around $700k over 5 years when he signed. Front loaded. His last year (next year) may only be worth $300-400k.

Lets talk about this involving some numbers. Lets assume he wants $1.5m over the next 3 years and the clubs agree he's worth pick 12 (1268 points).

Now, if Richmond goes 'He's worth pick 12. On the other hand, we're sign him to a 3 year deal, frontloading $800k of that, so he's paid $350k a year in year 2 and 3, but if we do that, we want your Collingwood pick, which is a #5, worth 1878 points'.

Doing that costs Richmond cap room next year, but they get a better pick. GWS pay a better pick, but they have more cap room going forward the next few years.

If Richmond did that, it means they have given up 2017, and are going into rebuild mode. It probably also means that GWS think that the other clubs dont rate their Acadamy crop as highly as certain journos.

It doesnt matter if you go 'he's worth pick 6' - its the way the deal works, of how much extra draft currency he is worth if the losing club picks up salary.

He's worth what we value him at, if GWS are interested in Deledio you aren't getting him for anything less then a spectacular deal.

Under contract with a good 3-5 years left in him, can play forward midfield or back and has proven himself to be an elite player. Pick12 isn't even in the ballpark.

Im looking at an underachieving team that has had a good hard look at where they sit and is going 'This list tops out at ninth. If we're lucky. Time to blow it up and start again'.

But if you value him that highly, answer me a question. Will he play in the next Richmond premiership side ?

Don't care about anything else.

Deledio, as a player, is worth a hell of a lot more then a single pick 12. So either get creative, or be prepared to lose a couple of draft picks if GWS are actually serious about Deledio.

Btw, for all we know, if he left for GWS, he might not win one with you guys, so it's a stupid question.

You're assuming Im that interested in him as a GWS player. Really, Im not sure who we'd drop for him - possibly Palmer.

Nope, this is going to follow the usual script of GWS dealing with Melbourne clubs. We'll package an offer. It'll involve first round picks. It'll be rejected. The player will continue along another couple of years. Their club will try and get rid of them.

It's how it works.

Deledio would walk into your team and every other team bud, probably the most embarrassing thing I've seen you say.

And this has nothing to do with GWS V Ever other Vic club.

If GWS want Deledio, you aren't getting him for anything less then a to good to refuse offer, he's contracted, a required player, and champion of our club.

but he has a much better chance at GWS than he has at Richmond

That may be true, and he probably does, but it's not a guaranteed thing, so for IanW to ask the question in the way he did was stupid.
the way i see it, he wasnt asking a question. he was putting up a hypothetical situation, hence the name of the thread.
he was saying IF Richmond said we want pick 12, this is what the clubs may have to do or will want to do.
you have completely misread what IanW has been saying IMO

No, I read his question/hypothetical properly, if we got pick 12, I'm sure it would help with the list clean out, it's just that, they aren't getting Deledio for pick 12.

he isnt offering pick 12 for Deledio.
what he is saying is that IF Richmond value him at pick 12, which they probably dont, but he is saying IF they do, then this may happen

This is going to be the worst part of GWS fans, the arrogance after being spoon-fed as many first rounders as possible.

Here's how it's going to pan out - Deledio is a champion of the club, who has stayed on through some of our darkest years. He would easily be one of your best players, but he himself would prefer not to be traded. Therefore, Richmond will not trade him for less than something that is seen as a clear win.

Beautiful.

Then he stays at Richmond, and we keep all the kids who were going to quit after two years and go to Melbourne, and everyone is happy.

He threw up pick 12 because that's all he wants to cough up.

The club would value him as untouchable, but, if GWS gave us an offer to good to refuse, and Deledio wanted to be traded, then a top10 pick is a starting point.

How the hell are GWS going to afford Deledio?
They dont have the room in the cap to fit him.

McCarthy and Tomlinson are gone, likely Caleb Marchbank too and maybe Jack Steele. That is enough money.

but how do know this?

Deledio is a good player, but lets not pretend he has had bucketloads of "elite" seasons. He hasn't in fact he has been inconsistent quite a bit. Still worth a top 10 pick, and pick 12 isn't far away (with a pick coming back to GWS in the late rounds probably).

which is probably true, if Jake Carlisle went for pick 5 last season, i would value Deledio at around the 8-12 mark, as he is a lot older and although he is a very good player, who can play multiple positions, Carlisle is a KPP who at his best, would be one of the top 5 defenders in the comp.
