I don't need reminding that we are in the bottom 4 and our first pick isn't until 35.
I still reckon that Omeara is as good or better than everyone on this list.

Pick 4 in the draft:

2000 Luke Livingston
2001 Graham Polak
2002 Tim Walsh
2003 Farren Ray
2004 Richard Tambling
2005 Josh J. Kennedy
2006 Matthew Leuenberger
2007 Cale Morton
2008 Hamish Hartlett
2009 Anthony Morabito
2010 Andrew Gaff
2011 Will Hoskin-Elliott
2012 Jimmy Toumpas
2013 Marcus Bontempelli
2014 Jarrod Pickett
2015 Clayton Oliver
2016 Ben Ainsworth

As things stand they are the players I'd rather than Jaeger at this point in time, in Kennedy's case assume he was 23.

I would rather have Kennedy, Bont & Oliver.
Also, we gave up more than Pick 4 anyway.

Except that the trade for O'Meara wasn't just the 2017 1st round pick

Is there only one premiership player picked at 4 in the last 16 years?

As things stand they are the players I'd rather than Jaeger at this point in time, in Kennedy's case assume he was 23.

So there is a 4 in 17 chance (based on that) that youd get someone as good or better than Omeara. Given that you can see why the recruiters rolled the dice.

I still think that Omeara will be better than the sum of what we gave up. People are emotional and reactive because the guy isn't out there and blitzing from the get go. Look at Burgoyne and Gibson. Both struggle in the beginning. We gave up a similar bounty for Burgoyne (which was criticised strongly at at the time) however in retrospect I don't think any of us would hesitate in redo'ing that deal. Perspective!

Though is has to be said we also gave up 2 early 2nd round picks on top of that pick 4 for Jaeger.

Yeah so lets say we finish in 10-12th spot this season ( i highly doubt that we will stay in the bottom four).

A 22yr old Omeara will have cost pick ~ pick 10 + pick 25 (Ben Long) + pick 29 (Josh Battle).

Compare that to a 27yr old Burgoyne who we gave up pick 9 + pick 40 + pick 56 and Mark Williams (who was probably worth pick 18-22 at the time).

This one has to be judged with the benefit of time. It's way to early too call.

I think we are finishing bottom 4 this season as I can't think of many teams we will finish above, but your not wrong when you say its too early to judge the trade.

Perhaps this should be viewed in the context of the 2017 draft being pretty shallow and 2018 being strong and deep.
And we do have our 2018 draft picks don't we?

Strong and deep drafts only really matter for Picks outside the top 10 I'd say, always plenty of talent available with top 10 picks in every draft.

Don't disagree with that. However, I would prefer to have an early draft pick in 2018 rather than 2017 if that is our option.

I heard last week on SEN that the top 5 in the 2018 draft could ALL be key position, but there are no top end tall players in the 2017 draft.

Wow, i knew people where questing what we paid for Omeara but i never realized people were jumping off the bandwagon as well!

O'Meara will be a VERY good player for us for a long time. Its only been 6 months.

You can tell i haven't spent much time in the Omeara threads hahaha!

Jarrod Brander (195cm key position prospect) and Sam Hayes (200 cm key position and ruck prospect) will be in the first round as things stand, Brander well and truely in top 5 calculations at this stage, Hayes could end up going early as well. Nationals this month will of course give a better indication of the talent pecking order

Brander has been in and out of the GWS academy, what's the latest on his academy status?
Swingman type with good mobility.
