I've come to this a bit late, I know the champs start this weekend but at this stage is there a commonly agreed handful of players seen to be in the running for the top two picks in the ND?
There might be. This time last year McGrath and Taranto were not really talked about in that vein.

I have absolutely no idea about this draft and for me at this time of the year and the amount of time I've had sitting at home recently with a broken leg it seems strange. I'm not sure if it's a reflection on me caring less this year, normally I have a fairly good grasp of the top end players at least, or if it's how vanilla, uninteresting and news worthy this crop is?

Besides this, I'd like us to pick up a top end 60/40 inside/outside hybrid type. Think our team needs midfield support and a player like this would balance out the Cripps' and Curnows' from the SPS', Cuningham's and Pickett's. What I mean is someone that's prepared to get very dirty; inside ball and tackling etc. but someone that's not a turnover merchant when they get the ball on the spread and is neat and creative on the outside, perhaps kick a few long goals from the midfield? Like a Mitch Robinson type that can actually kick and perhaps a little less manic with their body and actions...? Is Jack Ziebell a good example? Dayne Beams maybe is more like what I'm saying? Josh Kelly is a reasonable current example, but he is probably more outside silk, gun who's not soft and he is really the top end, like the very top talent. Maybe I just want the last three players combined who will take us to 17 and win a couple of Brownlow's and Norm Smith's along the way. Surely not asking too much?
Mmm, sounds a bit like Fogarty

Wonder whether we'd take Brander should he prove to be worth the pick #1. as it may be unlikely that Brisbane would take him, given Schache, Hipwood and their Academy pick-up in Ballenden.

Long way out and I haven't see any live action at all, but looking at profiles only;

1. Stephenson
2. Rayner
3. Davies-Uniacke
4. Darcy Fogarty
5. O'Brien

* Brander

Given the love we had for Hayward last year, would Stephenson appeal should his form continue?
If young Jaidyn Steph continues to impress and shows more some midfield potential at the carnival, could easily see him push for top billing in a Bont-esque hype. Problem is that the paddlepops will likely take best available non-KPF so he could be on their radar.

If you haven't seen any live action, why are you suggesting we take the 18th ranked player?

Really is too early to determine who will be in the top 6 this year. Stephenson has some solid attributes but at this stage I have him outside the top 12 and most likely will stay there unless he either stars up forward or shows quality through the middle at the Championships and beyond.

The 2 kids I will be looking at closely will be O'Brien and Cerra

O'Brien is elite when it comes to vision, speed, quick penetrating hands and disposal by foot. Can hurt you outside as well as in traffic and cane play inside mid too. At this stage, I believe he has no clear weakness. A mix of Zac Merret/Josh Kelly. Could be very special. Depending what he does from the Championships onward, might be in contention for top 3

Cerra is an interesting one, due to missing so much football last year. Always seems poised, whether that be his decision making or actual disposal. Reads the play very well. Liken him to a Blake Acres

I've perused the same phantoms and Stephenson seems to polarise them. He's touted as the 'best' in the draft in a Chris Yarran sort of way that has some in raptures and others, meh.

O'Brien sounds like the interesting one for me. A good outside runner with a deadly kick.

I know this isn't a draft question, but why is there all this talk about Hopper? Why would he want to come to us and how would we get him? I'm sure we could not keep our top pick this year and maybe next if we don't trade back into this years second round.
So if we traded for Hopper then i think this thread is void, either take our top pick or trade it, not sure we can do both and win.

Maybe SOS's thinking might be trade in Hopper to replace Gibbs. Draft Stephenson to add forward x factor and onball speed rotation.

Just spitballin'
That being the case, if GWS end up with #5ish perhaps there may be opportunity to swap our #2, if we think Stephenson will still be available there.

Depending how highly GWS may rate the top few, it potentially makes a large dent in a trade for Hopper.

We could use a possible first round we get for Gibbs to obtain Hopper, while keeping our current 1st

Perhaps not the right forum and apologies to the Mods if not, but what're people's thoughts on us getting a PP assuming we finish this low?

If it happened, we could potentially all of a sudden have 2 x 2nd round picks: 1 x 3rd tier FA compo (Casboult) and 1 x PP e.g. Pick 20, 21

Then we could look at trading that to GWS if they do let go of Kelly to North (pick ~8 and then some).

Picks 21, 22 = 1723 points for Pick 8 = 1551 points.

We hit the draft with another 2 x Top 10 picks = SOS happy.

Or am I just dreaming?

The pick we get for Gibbs will have something to do with it

LDU, Stephenson or Fogerty. Would be pretty thrilled with either one of them. That being said, there's still a lot of water to go under the bridge. Be interesting to see who the bolter or bolters are closer to draft day.

O'Brien appears to be very much like Josh Kelly. If we can trade in Hopper, and O'Brien is still a top prospect come the end of the year it very much seems like he'd be a Bolts/SOS pick based on his attributes. Pretty sure he was training with us last pre-season too.

Might take a little longer to fully blossom at the top level though, compared to Fogarty, Rayner etc.
