If only it were an exact science hey.
I'm the opposite is take the 2nd best best player if he was 99% to stay vs the best who is 50% but it's pretty hard to predict a player mindset 2 years into the future as well

Yeah, it's definitely not an exact science but I think ability and performance is easier to gauge than whether or not they'll stay so I'd just take whoever projects to be the best player unless they're outright saying in interviews "don't draft me, I'll go home."

Seems like we are starting to sort out the strategy now. At least we have one anyway think we were slow to adapt to the increase & ease of player movement. I'm assuming our screening process would be one of the more thorough ones of all the clubs.

I don't know if there is a psych / resilience testing as part of the combine. The AFL should drive it anyway cos it effects all clubs. Depression is now a growing concern in the game surely any info clubs can get on their players would be a good thing.

Have read he has breakaway speed, but he's not athletic. Bit weird.

Darcy Fogarty is tanking.
Knightmares player comparison for LDU is Michael Barlow, has him ranked 2. At 1, Rayner is Dusty and at 3, Fogarty is Jake Stringer. o_O

I don't enter this thread all that often, but this being in the first post I hadn't unread seems auspicious!

On Brett Anderson's first draft/trade on the clock podcast today he was saying this time last year he had around 70 players on his draft board as AFL potential players and as of now he has 25-30 for this year.

On the Schache situation he said he will not be at Brisbane next year and the Lions are resigned to that being the case.

Strange post from that guy. Why wouldn't we want another young midfielder? What the hell else would we be targeting?
Isn't he the guy who's always claiming to be 'in the know'/making shit up on the st kilda board?

Davies-Uniacke dominates in Vic Country opening win
June 11, 2017 by Matt Balmer

POSSIBLE number one draft selection Luke Davies-Uniacke stamped his authority as one of the best players in the 2017 draft pool, starring in Vic Country’s 12-point win over the Allies at Blacktown on Sunday.

In what was a high quality game and had a seesawing second half, 187cm and 85kg midfielder Davies-Uniacke used his strong frame in the contest to gather a game-high 34 disposals, 10 marks, five inside 50s and four clearances.

The AFL Academy member was a standout in their loss to the Northern Blues back in April and has continue to show his ball winning abilities at school football level for Haileybury College.

Fellow AFL Academy midfielders Paddy Dow (21 disposals, six clearances and one goal) and Hunter Clark (21 disposals) were also among Country’s best players in the second game of the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships.

Dow showed his burst from the stoppages, with his goal just before half time vital in giving Country the lead going into the main break. James Worpel had a game-high 11 tackles working hard on the inside.

Bendigo Pioneer Kane Farrell returned to form with 21 disposals after a quiet few weeks at TAC Cup level, while Murray Bushranger Ben Paton rebounded the ball well out of defence finishing with 22 disposals.

Geelong Falcons bottom-agers Ed McHenry (23 disposals and eight tackles) and Sam Walsh (22 disposals) were impressive through the midfield and up forward.

Tasmanian Hugh Dixon booted three third-quarter goals to kick start the Allies’ third term, seeing them boot four goals to one, to take the lead at three quarter time. But it was all Vic Country in the final quarter, where they booted four goals to none.

Likely top five selection Jarrod Brander shone at centre half back relishing in the new role compiling 20 disposals, rebounding it well out of defensive 50 on nine occasions.

GWS Academy midfielder Nicholas Shipley was the Allies highest disposal winner with 21 disposals, impacting the game through the midfield.

Tasmanian bottom ager and North Melbourne Next Generation Academy member Tarryn Thomas showed his class with 18 disposals and looms as an early pick in 2018.

Small midfielder Charlie Spargo finished the day with 18 disposals and six tackles, while small forward Jack Hardmanwas impressive early booting a goal in the first quarter for the Allies.

Sydney Swans Academy member Luke Robertson suffered a nasty broken leg in the opening quarter, with the game being halted while he was carried from the field.

The Allies will travel to play South Australia next Saturday in a televised match on Fox Footy at 10.10am, while Vic Country have the bye.

U18: No.1 pick fancy guides Vic Country home
Giulio Di Giorgio June 11, 2017 6:42 PM

POTENTIAL No.1 draft pick Luke Davies-Uniacke has played a starring midfield role in Vic Country's 12-point win over the Allies in the first round of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships on Sunday.

The 187cm Rye product amassed 34 disposals and took 10 marks – both game-highs – to go with his five inside 50s, four clearances and three tackles in the 10.8 (68) to 8.8 (56) win at Blacktown International Sportspark.

Davies-Uniacke proved the X-factor courtesy of his ability to execute efficiently by hand and foot, and make an impact all over the ground.

The Allies went one man down early after Sydney academy member Luke Robertson, 19, suffered a broken leg in the opening minutes and was taken to hospital.

Potential top-10 prospect, midfielder Paddy Dow, worked his way into the game and stood up under pressure when the game was in the balance, finishing with 21 touches, six clearances and a goal.

Small forward Brent Daniels was lively for his 18 touches and one goal, while 185cm rebounding defender Ben Paton provided quick counter-attacks at the opposite end.

Bottom-aged players Sam Walsh – who was a late inclusion for the match – and Jye Caldwell dominated the match early for Vic Country before finishing with 22 and 17 disposals respectively.

Strong-bodied inside midfielder Nick Shipley led the stats sheet for the Allies with 21 possessions, seven clearances, six tackles and three marks, displaying his strong work ethic and smooth kicking action.

Half-back Jarrod Brander controlled the air and read the ball well, collecting 20 possessions, a match-high nine rebound 50s and four marks.

Small forward Jack Hardman showed a strong burst of speed for his 15 touches, seven inside 50s and one goal.

After trailing by 12 points at three-quarter time, Vic Country kicked four unanswered goals to secure the win, while each of the Allies' three shots at goal in the last quarter hit the post.

Meanwhile, Tasmania secured a comfortable 14.8 (98) to 4.4 (28) win over NSW/ACT in the Under-17 Future Series curtain raiser.

Miller Hodge took out best-on-ground honours for Tasmania and Harrison Gunther bagged five goals, while Matt Walker led the way for NSW/ACT with three majors.

From early reports Fogarty was pretty average in the first game of the U18 Carnival against WA today. Finished with 12 disposals and 2 goals playing in the midfield.

Stats/Selected teams Sheets don't always tell the full story.

I wasn't there, but from the report below, played mostly forward, before being moved back to defence in the last quarter to try and negate W.A. forwards.

(Interestingly, although not unusual for AFL website reporting, photo caption says Raynor was "one of SA's best", but not named in the best)

Sounds like any of the top 4 are excellent , which one would kill to play for Brisbane would be my pick

I'm aware of that. I was referring to comments made from people in attendance on the draft and trading board. FWIW the posters who saw the game said he played his best footy in the defensive role.

Darcy Fogarty is tanking.

Are people trying to see something that simply not there with Fogarty, haven't heard him dominating in the midfield at any level yet.

I get a very Aaron Francis type of vibe about him, seems to get bounced back and forward and looks great at times, but hasn't got that midfield game yet.

Being his size if he doesn't develop a tank to go through the middle, or have the explosiveness to play successfully upforward, he may be considered an Undersized KPP prospect, which can be a hard transition to AFL.

Hopefully it's a slow start to the year and we see the best of him over the next couple of months

If Hawthorn get pick 1 after all the years up there, then they have tanked. They still have quality players

Bad time to tank. Saints get their first pick this year.

Francis could still come good and you there was concerns on Stringer pre-draft that he was advantaged at junior by having a developed body and question marks over whether or not he could play midfield.

I don't think you'd draft Fogarty as a midfielder.

I find it very interesting, As just a regular footy watcher I've no idea what the scouts look for clearly they are good at identifying the upside of players & the positions they are capable of playing obviously effects their rankings.

Cos I've watched Fogarty a handful of times & if you just pick who's the best player there are guys in the same team that are clearly playing better - Martini (projected 3rd - 4th round) & J scarenberg & I Milera ( both last year's draft) but Forgerty still has the big wraps on him.

But at the same time you can hardly expect him to put up regular big numbers all the time playing against Men as an inside mid.

Hopefully we will see him put in some big games in the Carnival or the SANFL seniors that shows what everyone sees in him

Cos I think he'd be a good fit at Bris - but we wanna still be taking a top rated talent

I get the impression that the talk about Fogarty being a contender for pick 1 is on the back of midfield potential, which he simply hasn't shown yet. If he doesn't show that, I see him potentially sliding outside of that top drafting tier because of that. With that, his size, having no clear defined position yet and playing for SA makes me draw the connection between them. I wasn't discrediting Francis in my post, just pointing out the similarities.

Darling and Stringer are recent examples of similar size players to have a real impact, but I haven't read or seen that Fogarty possess that real explosiveness they have. Players of their size can find it hard to transition, but if they can get another string to their bow it often comes together in a big way. I'm certainly not writing Francis or Fogarty off by any stretch.
