There will more than likely be live pick trading on draft night next year. I would move heaven and earth to draft Rankine. I know what you are saying, though. I just believe he will be a game changer and match winner, and would round out our future starting midfield. I will cry when don't draft him because of ladder position.

Have to remember, that is just Rankine's highlights from this years U18 Champs. There's much more footage online. I do not have any concern of Rankine carrying his form in to next year, barring injury. He's been playing like this in the SANFL for the past two seasons.

My one knock on Paddy Dow is that I haven't seen depth in his kicking. Does he have the ability to kick from outside 50, or hit a target inside 50 from the centre square. I don't have that concern with Rankine.

Other recruiters and teams will have all seen Rankine and will probably want him just as much as you. If we are too high up on the ladder for Rankine, then there is nothin we could do to offer up trade value l reckon

I saw him send a set shot home from just on 50 at the champs.His kicking didn't concern me,but I've only seen him twice.Leon Harris, who is a strong advocate of him,and makes no secret of that,thinks he ticks all the boxes.Looking at Saturday's game,my template, is Pendlebury-Bont,a line breaker,who wins clearances, and is a prime mover, with acceleration, and stamina...Superman! I think Constable could develop this way,big,powerful and mobile,with much scope for development.

Scouting notes: Speedy inside midfielder who can push forward and hit the scoreboard. Right footed midfielder who was superb for the AFL Academy in their game against the Northern Blues – not looking out of place at the centre bounces. Runs a sub three second 20m sprint and has very good agility. Not afraid to take on opposition midfielders in the contest, attempting to speed out of the stoppages.

Last month: Did not play for Bendigo against Sandringham as he was up in Queensland watching his brother play for Vic Country in the Under 16 Championships. His games at Geelong Grammar have been exceptional and he made it three Best & Fairest’s in a row from Year 10 to Year 12 on the weekend. His clearance work was very good against APS premiers Haileybury.

Its a really strange one actually. When you look at the list of SA mids especially, its a long list of guys who just didn't kick on from junior football. The record is even worse when you start to look at those that played early or regular SANFL footy. Its a really strange set of circumstances which i'm struggling to find an explanation for atm.

As for Rankine hes certainly elusive and has a really easy looking kicking style. Geez he really needs to do some work on his handballing though, looks pretty poor in those clips

They still haven't beaten a team who was top 8 at the time - all season. They'll have to learn quick.

Former Demon on the verge of an AFL lifeline

FORMER Demon Dom Barry could be on the verge of an AFL lifeline, having scored an invite to South Australia's State Combine.

The 23-year-old played five games for Melbourne in 2014 before quitting to return to the APY Lands, along with spending time in Darwin and Alice Springs, to devote more time to his indigenous culture.

Barry, who won a NEAFL premiership with NT Thunder in 2015, relocated to Adelaide last year to start a teaching degree and play for SANFL club Glenelg to try to revive his AFL dream.

He is one of 96 players set to test at State Combines in Victoria (55), South Australia (21), and Western Australia (20). Recruiters will run their eyes over a further 23 footballers at the Rookie Me Combine, created due to number restrictions at Etihad Stadium.

Glenelg coach Matthew Lokan, who played 46 games for Collingwood, said Barry had the attributes to be a success in the AFL. "Dom's been outstanding, and his ability to run – both his endurance and speed – is AFL standard," Lokan told AFL.com.au.

"Part of his decision to come down to Adelaide was to get back into the system. He lived at a boarding school in Ballarat when he was growing up (from 14 years of age), so he hadn't spent much time at home, but now he's done that. "He's had a really consistent year. Early on, he wasn't getting a lot of attention from the opposition, but they're starting to run tags now."

The Tigers already had Darcy Fogarty and Alex Martini heading to the NAB AFL Draft Combine. Clubmates Barry, father-son prospect Jackson Edwards, Sam Davis, Liam Denton, Tobin Cox and Curtis McCarthy are going to the State Combine.

Among the other highlights are 10 VFL-listed footballers across the Victorian State and Rookie Me combines.

Casey's Bayley Fritsch, Richmond's Derrick Smith, Essendon's Alex Boyse and Nick Hind and Williamstown's Brett Bewley are the State invitees. Bombers James Ferry and Kieran Strachan, Collingwood's Marty Hore, Seagull Josh Newman – brother of Sydney's Nic – and Box Hill's Sam Switkowski are off to the Rookie Me Combine.

Subiaco's Liam Ryan, who leads the WAFL with 60 goals in 18 games this year, headlines the West Australian list after also being on the AFL radar last year.

East Perth ruckman Scott Jones and Ryan's teammates Haiden Schloithe – an ex-Docker – and Liam Baker are others to watch.

I've been trying to decide if we need inside or outside mids more, but after putting names down it's clear we just need talent/depth at both spots. Inside we have Mathieson, maybe Keays and likely Berry though they both play outside a bit as well, while outside I see only McGluggage as that true receiver/link man. All our other younger players are more half back/wing/half forward types (Allison, Witherden, Cutler, Cox, Taylor).
So select the best midfielders available at each of our selections this year and we can worry next year about inside or outside.

My belief is that Dow will start his AFL career up forward as a defensive forward and outside on the wing and will begin to transition to an inside mid in his third season.

Cerra and LDU more likely begin their careers as inside mids.

I haven't seen any of Lochie O'Brien this year, but may as well repeat last years draft and draft two kids from the same school and TAC cup team. Guess I better hope we keep our third pick and get to use it as a live pick on Worpel.

Anybody know the criteria for selection for the Rookie Me Combine? As far as I know it's the first time they've had two types of State combine. Suggestion on the AFL website that it was just due to excess numbers for one combine to be held at Etihad but I get the feeling there might be some ranking involved as well. Apparently the venue for it is TBC.

Apparently dermy thought Lachlan was one of the best kids he has ever seen a few years ago but reported on SEN today that Harris hasn't grown since he was 14 and is only likely to be a rookie chance now. I wonder if he is a similar height to Caleb Daniel

I know what that is like. I grew 1cm after year 8. Was a tall kid when young, then watched everyone grow past me in high school.
