I don’t think that the majority of small forwards in lower leagues/u 18 really tackle all that much. Just to add the majority of small forwards in the AFL were mids as juniors. With all the talk of wanting to get more pressure forwards, I don't really understand the obsession with picking up Sambono in the draft. I've seen him play enough NEAFL games to know that he's probably the last bloke you'll see giving you forward pressure. I don't think he has much burst and he's got no physicality; don't think he even laid many tackles in the NEAFL.
Matt Guelfi looks even more impressive. Faster over 20m, has a kick like a mule and can take mark. Played seniors for Claremont.Liam Baker could be worth a look at with a late draft selection or rookie, the highlight package is one of the better ones I have seen, this years highlights have been rather uninspiring on the whole.

Even though we have Charlie Cameron coming in I feel we still need a decent pressure small forward and Baker could fit the bill, would be all for one of Adam Sambono, Sam Switkowski, Gryan Miers or Liam Baker.
Contracts would need to be negotiated after the first 2 years to be fairly compensated to their abilities.I'm all for longer contracts for first round draftees, but what about their wages after the first two years of their contract?Would they have to be set by a tribunal or something? It would be completely messy if a breakout star comes from a lower round with a shorter initial contract and then can be signed for huge money while a 1st round pick who is showing as much is stuck on a lower rate for two more years.

I'm also in the Campbell Walker camp, as he played that pressure forward role brilliantly, laying 8 tackles in one game from memory. Also took some memorable contested marks, one a real screamer. He is a good mark for his size. Perfect as a Queensland zone selection.I'd like to see us rookie list Campbell Walker. He was impressive this year as a fill in. He has a great work ethic, good skills and can mark the footy. Definitely something to work with. He was pivotal in the neafl finals as well.
The player would have no leverage in that negotiation to prevent being lowballed since there is no competition.

Managers are pretty good at their jobs these days. They know the going rates for these guys at similar progression and potential. The player would have no leverage in that negotiation to prevent being lowballed since there is no competition.
I wonder if there is any further interest in the 2 Irish fellas that were training with the group during the year.I read yesterday that Matt Eagles is being retained as a Cat B rookie.
William is gone, so that’s one Zone Rookie spot available.
But what happens if they can’t agree?Managers are pretty good at their jobs these days. They know the going rates for these guys at similar progression and potential.
There would still be a negotiation process until both camps are happy.
The first 2 yr contract are games based contracts with a base. Which is set by the draft position. But what happens if they can’t agree?
It is a fundamental element of a contract that it has to be certain. You can’t have a four year deal and say “we’ll work out payment later”. You can stipulate contract values like happens with first and second year players or you can have a mechanism for calculating the contract (eg based on # of senior games, Best and Fairest results, 90% of avg value of 5th year contracts etc). But a contract without a sufficiently certain payment clause will be unenforceable.
