More magic set for Westfield FFA Cup 2017

The Magic of the Cup will spring to life for its fourth year following confirmation of the match schedule and format for the 2017 Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds, the stage when the Hyundai A-League clubs enter the national knockout competition.

This year saw a new record of Westfield FFA Cup entrants, with 721 clubs around the country competing in the Preliminary Rounds as Australia’s national knockout competition continues to grow in popularity.

This total will increase to 732 clubs with the inclusion of the ten Hyundai A-League clubs and New South Wales side Sydney United 58 FC, who received automatic entry to the Round of 32 as the PlayStation 4 NPL 2016 Champions of Australia.

The match days for this year’s Final Rounds (which encompasses the Round of 32 up to the Final) remain predominantly similar to last year with the Round of 32 to commence in the last week of July, while the Westfield FFA Cup Final 2017 will again be played midweek with the date set for Wednesday 22 November.

To view the Final Rounds match schedule and draw process click here

The draw for the Round of 32 will be conducted at 3pm (AEST) on Thursday 29 June 2017 LIVE on FOX SPORTS.

The Round of 32 draw will see the ten Hyundai A-League clubs placed into one pot meaning any of the 10 professional clubs could face a knock-out tie in the suburbs against a semi-pro or amateur Member Federation club. Further details regarding the draw will be announced closer to the date.

“The excitement and interest in the Westfield FFA Cup continues to rise in all parts of the country as Australia’s only true grassroots to professional competition moves into its fourth year,” said FFA CEO David Gallop.

“There have already been a plethora of magical moments and memorable scenes in the short history of the competition including Green Gully and Redlands United beating the Central Coast Mariners and Adelaide United respectively last year as Australia’s army of grassroots clubs and players look to take it up to the elite professionals.

“This year is certain to see more of those wonderful moments and atmospheres that only knockout Cup football can provide as semi professional and grassroots clubs dream of hosting Hyundai A-League teams in their own suburban backyards.”

On the announcement of the schedule and details for the Westfield FFA Cup 2017 Final Rounds, Peter Allen, Chief Executive Officer, Scentre Group, confirmed the Group’s pleasure in being the competition’s naming rights partner via its Westfield shopping centre portfolio.

“We are extremely proud to once again be the Major Sponsor of the Westfield FFA Cup,” said Allen.

“Just like the local clubs that participate in this competition, our Westfield shopping centres are very much part of their communities, and we look forward to showing our continued support to all the teams taking part in the Cup’s fourth season.”

FOX SPORTS will again provide comprehensive coverage from the Round of 32 onwards. The Westfield FFA Cup’s official broadcaster will show 11 matches LIVE (one match per match night) while providing coverage and updates, as well as LIVE streaming, of all non-broadcast matches. Details regarding the FOX SPORTS broadcast and streaming will be announced closer to the start of the Round of 32.

The first Round of 32 entrants from Member Federations will be decided tonight in Victoria with 2015 semi finalists Hume City taking on Moreland City, and 2014 semi finalists Bentleigh Greens hosting Green Gully, who made it to the final eight last year.

The countdown is on | Westfield FFA Cup

Get the lowdown on which stage each of the States/Territories are at as the prized 21 Member Federation spots in this year’s Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 edges closer to being finalised.

Queensland
What stage are they at?

Things are heating up in the race to secure one of the Sunshine State’s four Round of 32 spots. The makeup of two Round 7 Cup ties are already determined, while in the Brisbane Zone two of the Round 6 matches have been completed with the other two being played on 30/31 May.

Who’s still in?

Redlands United (PS4 NPL), Olympic FC (PS4 NPL), Peninsula Power (Brisbane Premier League), Logan Lightning (Brisbane Premier League), Grange Thistle (Brisbane Premier League), Moreton Bay United (PS4 NPL), Gold Coast City (PS4 NPL), Caloundra FC (Sunshine Coast McDonald’s Premier League), FNQ Heat (PS4 NPL), Mackay Magpies (Mackay & Regional Football Zone Division 1)

Upcoming fixtures

Grange Thistle, who currently languish at the bottom of their league table but have saved their best for the Westfield FFA Cup, will host the winner of the match between fellow Flight Centre Premier League sides Peninsula Power and Logan Lightning.

Moreton Bay United, the other Brisbane Zone winner already through to a Round of 32 decider after eliminating Albany Creek and Holland Park Hawks, awaits the victor of Redlands United and Olympic FC in what will be an all PS4 NPL Round 7 match up.

In the other regions, Gold Coast City (formerly Palm Beach SC) will be aiming to make it a hat-trick of appearances in the Final Rounds when they host Caloundra FC, while up north FNQ Heat are gunning to reach the Round of 32 for the fourth straight year when they take on Mackay Magpies. Both of these matches are scheduled for 10 June.

Northern NSW
What stage are they at?

We are up to Round 6 time in Northern NSW with the draw for the penultimate Preliminary Round of matches conducted earlier today.

Who’s still in?

Byron Bay Rams (Football Far North Coast Premier Division), Maitland FC (PS4 NPL), Coffs City United (North Coast Football Premier League), Cardiff City (Z F Premier League), Lambton Jaffas (PS4 NPL), Edgeworth FC (PS4 NPL), Valentine FC (PS4 NPL), Broadmeadow Magic (PS4 NPL)

Upcoming fixtures

Coffs City United v Cardiff City

Lambton Jaffas v Edgeworth FC

Valentine FC v Broadmeadow Magic

Can one or both North Zone clubs (Byron Bay Rams and Coffs City United) win their way through to a Round of 32 decider? Byron Bay face a tough task against Maitland FC while Coffs City come up against Cardiff City in a match that could go either way.

Arguably the pick of the Round 6 matches in Lambton Jaffas against Edgeworth FC, the two clubs who were the Northern NSW Round of 32 representatives last year.

All four matches will be played on Saturday 10 June at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility. CLICK HERE for full details.

New South Wales
What stage are they at?

Round 6 is done and dusted – bring on Round 7 and the showdowns to determine who will join Sydney United 58 FC (who have already qualified for the Round of 32 as the PS4 NPL Champions of Australia) in the Final Rounds.

Who’s still in?

Bulli FC, Blacktown City (PS4 NPL), Rockdale City Suns (PS4 NPL), Hakoah Sydney City East (PS4 NPL), Bankstown Berries (PS4 NPL 2), Sydney Olympic (PS4 NPL), APIA Leichhardt (PS4 NPL), SD Raiders (PS4 NPL 3), Hills Brumbies (PS4 NPL 2), Kemblawarra Fury (Illawarra Premier League)

There will be at least one non PS4 NPL NSW club making it into the Final Rounds after Hills Brumbies and Kemblawarra Fury both won through to a Round of 32 decider against each other.

Blacktown City, Rockdale City Suns, Sydney Olympic and Hakoah Sydney City East all remain in contention to have another crack on the national stage, while the other remaining PS4 NPL club, APIA Leichhardt will be aiming for a maiden appearance in the Round of 32.

Bulli FC, Bankstown Berries and SD Raiders have all been impressive in their Cup runs to date and will be dreaming of causing a significant ‘Cupset’ as they prepare to come up against PS4 NPL opposition.

Bulli FC v Blacktown City (31 May)

Bankstown Berries v Sydney Olympic (31 May)

Canberra FC v Tigers FC

Victoria
What stage are they at?

It’s a case of done, done all done with Victoria the first State/Territory to have its Round of 32 entrants determined after Football Federation Victoria held its final Preliminary Round matches on May 23 and 24.

Who’s still in?

Football Federation Victoria’s four entrants in this year’s Round of 32 are Bentleigh Greens, Hume City, Heidelberg United and South Melbourne FC, all clubs who have featured in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds before.

Bentleigh Greens have qualified for the Round of 32 for the third time, their best finish being a semi final appearance in the competition’s inaugural year where they were beaten by Perth Glory.

Hume City are also previous semi finalists having reached the last four in 2015 and will be making their third straight appearance in the Round of 32 after they accounted for Moreland City in Round 7.

Heidelberg United qualified after ending the Cup run of Northcote City, while South Melbourne’s Houdini act to beat Dandenong City after being 4-1 down with just over 10 minutes to go has been well publicised and regarded by many as the greatest Westfield FFA Cup match of all time.

Upcoming fixtures

Victoria’s four entrants in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds will know their next opponents following the draw for the Round of 32 which will be conducted at 3pm AEST on Thursday 29 June LIVE on FOX SPORTS.

Tasmania
What stage are they at?

It all comes down to this with two clubs left vying for Tasmania’s one Round of 32 spot.

Who’s still in?

Olympia Warriors (PS4 NPL), Glenorchy Knights

Can Glenorchy Knights cap off a fairytale Cup run by claiming a fourth straight PS4 NPL Tasmania scalp and represent the Apple Isle on the national stage? The Knights have eliminated Kingborough Lions, last year’s Round of 32 entrant Devonport Strikers, and Launceston City on their way to the big dance.

But standing in their way is an Olympia Warriors outfit that has scored 21 goals and is yet to concede in their three matches so far. It sets up an intriguing finale to Tasmania’s Preliminary Rounds.

Upcoming fixtures

The Round of 32 decider, which doubles as the Lakoseljac Cup Final, is set down for Monday 12 June. CLICK HERE for details.

South Australia
What stage are they at?

Four PS4 NPL clubs remain in the running for SA’s one Round of 32 spot as Round 6 of their Preliminary Round looms.

Who’s still in?

Two previous Round of 32 entrants (Adelaide City and MetroStars) and two sides attempting to reach the national stage for the first time (Adelaide Blue Eagles and West Torrens Birkalla).

All bar Adelaide City have had to endure either extra time or penalties on their way to this stage of the competition, and it promises to be a thrilling finale as all four clubs will fancy their chances of being the ones to feature in the Final Rounds.

Upcoming fixtures

WT Birkalla will face MetroStars while Adelaide Blue Eagles take on Adelaide City. The matches will be played on 13/14 June. CLICK HERE for details of the two Round 6 encounters.

Western Australia
What stage are they at?

After 58 clubs started their 2017 Westfield FFA Cup journey, it has reached crunch time in the west with four clubs left in the running for Football West’s two Round of 32 entrants.

Who’s still in?

Bayswater City (PS4 NPL), Dianella White Eagles, Western Knights, Sorrento FC (PS4 NPL)

Upcoming fixtures

The two PS4 NPL WA clubs managed to avoid each other when the Round 7 draw was conducted, and both will fancy their chances to progress with Bayswater pitted against Western Knights and Sorrento FC to host Dianella White Eagles. But stranger things have happened and after the Knights and Eagles both toppled PS4 NPL opposition in their last matches, who says they could not do it again.

Really hope this competition keeps growing and gets more coverage. Would love to see non HAL clashes get more looks on TV too.

Went down to watch MetroStars last year which was fantastic.

I was pretty sad that Northcote City went down the other night. They're flying this season, albeit in NPL2 - but more than that, they're the closest team to my place. Since moving here I've long held this crazy dream of an Northcote City hosting an A-League club a 10 minute walk from my house.

Seven newcomers for FFA Cup draw

Seven clubs, including four from leagues below the National Premier Leagues, will make their maiden appearance in the FFA Cup Final Rounds as the competition enters the stage when the 10 A-League clubs join the fold.

The seven new clubs are New South Wales trio APIA Leichhardt Tigers, Bankstown Berries and Hills United, Queensland’s Moreton Bay United and Peninsula Power, Olympia FC Warriors from Tasmania and WA side Western Knights.

Notably, three clubs (Queensland’s FNQ Heat and New South Wales pair Blacktown City and Sydney United 58 FC) have become the only Member Federation sides to qualify for the Round of 32 every year since the Westfield FFA Cup began in 2014.

The match ups for the Round of 32 will be determined at a draw to be conducted at 3pm (AEST) this Thursday 29 June at FOX SPORTS studios in Sydney.

The draw will be hosted by FOX SPORTS football personality Tara Rushton and conducted by former Socceroos captains Peter Raskopoulos and Charlie Yankos. The draw will be LIVE on Fox Sports News (Channel 500).

The Round of 32 draw will see the A-League clubs placed into one pot (Pot A), with the Member Federation clubs placed into another pot (Pot B).

The order of the draw will see balls pulled out of the pots in order to firstly determine the three (3) all A-League club matches and nine (9) all Member Federation club parings before the intriguing four (4) Member Federation club v A-League club fixtures.

The 16 matches in the Round of 32 will be held over three weeks with four matches per night across four match nights (either Tuesdays or Wednesdays) beginning in the last week of July.

FOX SPORTS will show 11 matches LIVE (one match per match night) while providing coverage and updates as well as LIVE streaming of all non-broadcast matches. Details around the FOX SPORTS broadcast and streaming will be announced closer to the start of the Round of 32.

Qualified clubs and numbering for the draw

3 HAL clashes which whilst bad for us, is good for the comp as it ensures some of the state league sides get through.

The draw is fixed like that. An npl team always gets one of the semi final spots.

Wish it was an open draw

1) more chance of npl clubs getting a big pay day
2) more chance of an upset in round of 32 as a league teams are in pre season and npl teams are in full stride.

By the time the semi final comes around the npl seasons are finished and the A league has started, meaning the npl semi finalist has zilch chance.

Just leave it open and whoever gets who so be it.
