If the rumours are true then it will be too hard too pass up that offered it will be interesting how it plays out during the year.
Massive coin and even if it is 6 mill for 6 years it would change the way player managers look at contracts, any reports on what Treloars contract is? I vaguely recall 700-800pa but could be wrong
I still feel at least 1 of the OOC players will leave the club but just not sure who and I am always skeptical of the AFL media and some of the reporting is just click bait and I can see any thread on it reaching 200 pages with North posters frothing and several s*%t slinging contests between North and any of the 9 Vic clubs supporters, should be fun

About Devon Smith, as a Geelong supporter and the link I saw to him maybe joing a few things I might ask
Don't know much about him, what is he like as a player?
What's his best position?
What does he bring to the Giants in terms of pace, etc?

What would you give up for him? You don't have a 1st rounder available. He might go but it won't be there unless you find some proper currency.

My take on the Kelly offer is there must be a lack of interest on moving there so they are now throwing up stupid numbers. Their offer may have been relayed back to StKilda to match by his manager which would explain how Waldron got wind of it.

If the offer is true then I think he's gone. I'd love him to stay but our offer would've probably be five years at 650000 ish. We just couldn't get near it. Good luck to him if he can get that coin. If he doesn't re-sign with us by about Rd 8 I'll be cheering every north loss for the remainder of the season.

If they rate him at $9 mil (and he accepts) then they better be ready to give up 2 first rounders and possibly more

I dont think we'll get that much. Our option will be to try and play off North against another club and start a bidding war. That will work if that club or clubs can interest him, or send him to the PSD where everyone loses.
Most likely we settle for a first rounder and a second IMO, but we should definitely try.
If the offer is genuine and if he chooses to accept it over what we can offer.

There's a big difference between 9 mil for 9 years and 7 mil for 9 years - both of which have been reported. I don't think we can get close to the first, and if it really is that, then I wouldn't blame him for taking the money - but we might be able to get close enough to the second to keep him, if that's the offer - not the 9 years, that's just stupid, but the 777k per year over the journey, might be matched with something like 750k pa over a four or five year deal. Puts him close to what Jezza would be on.

We've signed a couple of five year deals recently, so that length is not unheard of - think of it as a 3.5 to 3.75 mil over five, coupled with the leadership group he's in and the mates he's playing with and the lifestyle he enjoys might be enough to stave off North.

Does that make sense?

Its not like you guys weren't expecting this sought of thing......media has said for years that other teams will start to poach your side and eventually your club would have to live with some stars leaving.......for the sheer fact you can't fit all of them into the salary cap.

Hmmm, we were rather hoping that no-one would notice and just let us go about our business without interfering too much. ;)

Thank you Captain Obvious! For a moment there we were all losing our minds over this. Let's have some value add comments please.

If we can prize him free (which I still don't think will happen), Id be hoping for something like the following:

North get Kelly

GWS get Norths 2018 first rounder and a 2017 mid to late first rounder secured via a third party trade.

Seem fair?

Personal view is that GWS would open the bidding at 2 first round picks, including North's 2017 pick, which would be expected to be earlier than 2018's. Norths would counter with one pick, and the argy-bargy will be about whether the 'plus' is a second rounder, a player, a traded pick from another club etc. I think that with GWS's draft penalty in 2017 they will want the 2017 first rounder. Now that Brander & Spargo have been removed from the academy, there are no prospective early academy picks, and we would want to replace Josh with someone as highly rated as possible. I thought I also read from a Norths poster that you had a likely F/S or academy kid in 2018 so would want to keep 2018 picks?

Plenty more to play out on this, it will keep BigFooty posters amused for most of the year I daresay.

I look at it another way.

Next year the tassie academy is up and running plus there are some potential father sons. If next year we could add a fit ahern, kelly, a low 2017 pick, and Thomas plus a father son next year, we'd be well on the way with our rebuild.

Getting rid of next years first rounder seems like we can get the best value.

There's also the possibility that North have another agenda here. The tin foil hat wearer in me thinks it could also just be a ploy for GWS to pay more than we otherwise would have for Kelly, forcing us to make tough decisions on other players that could be their real target like Shiel, Smith or Hopper.

Either that or they just really want Josho_O

Kelly is a player that North could use to sell the rebuild - former player's son, coming home etc. Smith and Hopper aren't nearly as important for that and much cheaper too.

Shiel is not talking to Victorian clubs so can't see it being used that way.

If I was the coaches and management I'd get Josh in and have a chat with him as well as Cogs and Dyl and ask how much money they've turned down, and why they did.
