It would be regrettable to lose Dev Smith, but in ranking the two players' importance to GWS going forward there's no contest that Josh Kelly is higher and if extra $ are required to hold him then so be it. Hopefully Dev would look at the $ as being swings and roundabouts, and that staying would improve his likelihood of a flag. Can only hope. Thanks Raymann for the inside info, always appreciated, and at least there's a positive to this news.

Some mail.
Club confident in retaining Kelly but will have to up the offer 100k per year.
Resigned to losing Smith unless he accepts the reduced offer on his current contract.
Club paid overs last time to help get the Cameron contract over the line. Now want to pay unders because of the Kelly contact offer.
did your source give a timeframe on how many weeks it'll take Kelly to sign? within 2 weeks?

Also, where is Devon Smith going if he is to leave
Geelong was reported to want him, and he's a Geelong junior. However, they have a problem with coming up with sufficient trade value, given that they need a first round pick to use on a draftee to satisfy trading rules - and I should think GWS would think him worth a first round pick. They may look to trade out players to get a pick, and I suppose we might take a couple of second round picks that added up to first round points, or future pick(s). Difficult to judge exactly as this year is difficult for GWS with the draft penalty, removal of academy kids & the revised rules. Otherwise, St Kilda might be next most likely.

Midfielder Dylan Shiel has added his name to the long list of GIANTS who’ve re-signed with the club early in 2017.

Shiel was due to come out of contact at the end of this season but has today inked a new two-year deal that will see the 24-year old contracted to the GIANTS until the end of 2019.

Shiel was one of the first players to sign with the GIANTS, moving to Western Sydney as a 17-year old in 2010.

Known for his explosive pace through the midfield, Shiel has become a fan favourite in his first 90 games as well as an important member of the GIANTS’ player leadership group.

Shiel said he’s excited about the future at the GIANTS.

“I’ve been here from the start and have seen this club develop over the years,” Shiel said.

“We’re a close playing group and Sydney is home for me. We’ve built a strong culture and a loyal fan base and I’m really looking forward to helping the GIANTS continue to grow.”

Such a good lad...love him.

I'm always concerned about how quiet he is about re-signing but then just re-signs with no fuss!

Dylan is the sort of kid we would all love to have as a son or the boy you'd wish your daughter married.

He is honest, hard working, loyal and an absolute credit to his parents. We are lucky to have him.

Danny88 - Dylan Shiel probably in your camp in regards contract negotiations:

“Josh’s decision is in a league of its own,” Shiel said of his mate’s possible move to the Kangaroos. “I’m really close to him and have a lot to do with him outside the footy club. I know Josh wants to remain at this footy club and I hope he stays and continues to buy into the footy club. He has to consider his life as well and life after footy. It’s an enormous amount of money he has been offered and puts him in a really difficult situation.”

As much as Shiel and his teammates want Kelly to stay, they won’t be twisting his arm every time they see him. “We won’t be applying any pressure to him,” Shiel said. “It’s a career decision and a life decision for him. In a way it was an easy decision to stay because we are in a position to achieve something. I know Josh sees that and I hope, we all hope, he makes a decision in favour of the Giants.”

Just makes me like Dylan even more. Come on Josh, you know it makes sense!

No surprise that something has to give here. It is a real shame that Smith is at risk. He is showing his versatility as he matures. I hope he stays. Kelly is definitely worth the extra. Any idea of length of the offer to Kelly?
Would I be alone in saying I would person prefer Smith over Kelly if I had to choose ?

You're not completely alone. Admire Devon Smith's football muchly.

Say we could choose 2 out of 3. Smith, Kelly, Whitfield. Looks like we might have to get used to only 2 of those 3 remaining.

Small forwards are a decent dime a dozen- players with that tank and disposal, who can play inside and out are not. Easy decision for mine

I'd rate Devon as better than a dime a dozen, but I agree with the point - I'd take a very good all-round midfielder over any small forward, even Betts.

Nah mate, his folks would be with you:p. Kidding!

So hard to choose in a head to head, but I keep coming down on the Kelly side of this equation. I actually think Smith is more versatile than punters give him credit for. His future come remain as a small forward, but I see him moving more and more into the mid-field. One thing that he hasn't developed as much as Tobes up forward is contested marking. Not essential, but it is one thing that I think impacts how I see him stacking up agaist his peers. Josh the better alround mid, Toby the better small forward. All very marginal though.

We don't want to lose Toby, that's for sure.

Devon is an attacking, goal kicking midfielder rather than a small forward.

Would keep Kelly over pretty much everyone on our list, sorry Devon.
