Our offer is not a problem 2 years x $800. It is consistent with what we pay our best players. This offer will squeeze one out say Smith, Hopper or Bam Bam
Bye Bye Devon.

Thank you so much for being a part of our club, and for all the hard work you have done through the hard times. You will always have a special place in history as one of our foundation players.

If Kelly and Smith go we finish up with 3 first rounders and about 1.3 cap space. Take Fyfe as a free agent and still keep the 3 first round picks.
The tears would be momentous.

How would we have that much cap space?

We would get a trade ban or lose our Academies due to vflers exploding.

Still. Almost worth the melts. Almost.

Only that they offered him nine mil, he supported the club growing up, his dad played for them.

We can't match the money, but he likes it here.
St Kilda might match the money but can't match the sentiment.

St Kilda makes absolutely no sense. North at least makes sense.

If he's leaving for money, surely 9 mil gets it done. Whatever St Kilda can offer, they can't offer him his dad's old jumper number.

I played competitive sport at senior level in 3 different sports in the city I grew up in with 1xsport being over 500 games and another over 250 games.
My son followed those teams growing up ,but when he got to High School he just wanted to play with his mates and didn't play not even one game for a team I played for.
Of course AFL is of a much higher standard than any level I played at,but my point is my son played in a different era to me and was not influenced by my past
I have no idea who Josh Kellys best mates are ,but he grew up in in Brighton and played at Sandringham Dragons.

If he wants to play with his mates, he'll stay here then.

Either way it goes, St Kilda, for mine, has nothing to offer other than money. It's not like they have a strong history (bar a few years a few years ago) of playing finals. It's not like they have a strong history of standing by a coach when things get a little dodgy. Where are you even based these days (Moorabbin or Casey, I can't keep track)?

He'd have a couple of friends there, no doubt, but it's not like he wasn't holidaying with Bontempeli last year or anything (is he secretly off to the dogs??!!??) or is the Bont coming here to be with his good mate Josh?

Doesn't work that way I wouldn't have thought.

I also don't really buy the Sandi Dragons argument because the players recruited from there are spread far and wide, we've got a couple on our list, we've traded away a few to other clubs. No offence but what is playing for Sandi have to do with St Kilda - there's no natural progression or affiliation there.

But, you know, money money money. Anything is possible if someone comes bearing a comically large cardboard cheque with an obscene amount of zeros on it.

I just think that all other things being equal, it's us or north.

It is great news. Tim is showing similar potential to Kelly. Let's hope that if he follows that trajectory, he stays yhe course with the Giants. Will hasn't had the same opportunity to show his wares at AFL level, but one hopes he will be a key plank in our next gen midfield. Harry may not have the out and out class, but he isn't embarrassing himself at this stage. Will be facinating to watch how these three progress.

Behind the paywall ...

GREATER Western Sydney continues to secure its star kids, on Tuesday signing up first-round picks Tim Taranto, Will Setterfield and Harry Perryman. The Herald Sun understands all three first-year players have signed two-year extensions that will see them locked away until 2020. Taranto is the No. 2 pick of last year’s draft, Setterfield the No. 5 selection and Perryman the No. 14 selection. AFL players sign initial two-season deals, with the deals a show of faith in the club’s direction given they were secured so early in their GWS careers. All three have looked accomplished when on display this year, with Taranto filling in as a key small forward as the club battles key injuries.

The Giants continue to give Josh Kelly room to consider his future, unwilling to distract him admit as he roars up the AFL’s midfield charts. If he decides he wants to stay the Giants do not have room to match $1 million a year offers but would hand him a lucrative two-year deal. Small forward Devon Smith wants to stay at the club, with the Geelong local and GWS moving closer to terms on a contract. Victorian Taranto has averaged 16 disposals in his 10 games for the Giants this year, while Setterfield was rated by some AFL clubs as the best kid in last year’s draft. Setterfield is yet to make his debut after an ankle injury suffered in the NEAFL but kicked three goals and had 33 possessions in his first NEAFL clash.

Heh apparently Hopper's gone because he didn't align his signings with this year's draftees. :D

He might be or might not be but that logic seems silly.
Most our non signed players are gone because they didnt sign in feb according to most.

Usual flogs looking for anything to brighten the dreary VFLer lives.

Hopper, kennedy devon would all be waiting on the outcome of the kelly deal i assume. Its no new news they havent' signed but there is a clear reason. I suppose its something to write and gets clicks tho

I read the signings thinking they are guys on rookie contracts who needed a salary rise. I assume the new payment takes effect from the time the deal is done.
The not paupers but it must hurt a little running out for the one on a lot less than their teamates. It seems Setterfield would have played bar injury and still likely this year. Just keeping the faith with them. Unless I've misread the way it works?

I don't think it works that way. Even when Boyd signed for a mil a year, his first at the Dogs was still on a rookie wage, which is in place for two years regardless.

What it does is give them security going forward. They know they're going to get the coin, that's what is locked in.

Tks
That I did not know.

What Ichabod Noodle said - the first two years of all draftees are mandated in contract length and total. These guys are getting pay rises in 2019 and 2020.
