even levi's strongest attribute - his marking - has suffered recently
Goes up and down with his mood.

Confidence player, with just so many ways to lose confidence. It's a pity, both for him and that we haven't found a way to get him over it, but we haven't.

I've never been a huge critic of the Bolt. We'd have killed for a player like him in 2009-11, just as he is right now. I do agree, though, that we need another key forward, but not because he's inaccurate or prone to giving away dumb frees. The key forward game is not just marks and goals and tackles anymore; nowdays, you've got to be smart even when you don't have a chance to get the ball, making sure it lands in the right spots, drawing the defenders in to tackle whilst the smalls wait outside, and altogether playing as both a dummy full forward and the genuine threat. All that, as well as needing to be transition when there's no other option downfield.

Used to be said that CHF was the hardest position to play on the ground. It never got any easier, and with current trends it just got even harder. We're lucky in a way; we've got a NUMBER of young talented potential key forwards, all of them with different attributes that could see them doing all of the above. Better to be us instead of someone like West Coast, who despite having one of the best traditional key forwards around are no closer than we are to winning a flag.

I like what you are saying but I agree with BluStreak here.

In a perfect world Levi would not be number 1 forward. I suspect round 1 he won't be.. And that weiters or H McKay will be.

What you say about Earl is true, I think the situation we face at present is that Levi is our number one forward not the number three forward.
This is why I believe we need to have another tall like Harry or Weiters to work with Charlie as our main forwards and leave Levi to be the relieving ruck option.
I think that having Levi and Harry in the same forward line would allow Levi (with his rep as a contested mark beast) to only compete against 2 players and Harry would ease into the game rather than being under pressure of being the target.

I'm not suggesting Levi should continue to carry the number 1 forward mantle, and I agree that we would be a much better team if our young talls stepped up and relegated him to our 2nd or 3rd best option up forward. But I would rather still have him in the side as a physical contested forward that can relieve ruck, rather than sending someone like McKay into the ruck as cannon fodder.

I really struggle with this logic. Going into the ruck is the best thing that could happen to McKay. It's worked wonders for Daniher Boyd Moore Patton Wright etc. It's no harder than playing key forward. If anything it's less physical pressure. Running around on the ball as oppsed to being the big target with big defenders jumping all over you.

Having 5-10 minutes a quarter on the ball running around getting some touches would be best for his development IMO.

Cannon fodder?

That there is a howitzer.

Nobody is asking him to ruck entire games off the bat - if he needs to contest 10 stoppages a game, he'll survive.

He seems like the kind of guy who would sign this photo and put it up in his brothers room.

Reckon Ben might do the same...

Jeez it'd be good to see these two line up on each other!

Looks like he has been putting in some serious time at the gym.

I can't agree with this post enough. It's much easier getting some touches in the ruck than as a target in a forward line against a well-drilled defence. You mention less physical pressure but there is also less mental pressure of having to kick goals. Stints in the ruck will be good for his development.

Maybe I’m one eyed but I think he has star potential. He is still very young, anything can happen.

He's shown glimpses where you think he could become a very good player. This year he needs to get a more consistency into this game.

Has the tools, needs to feel like he has the ability to use them.

Some people just can't shift that self-doubt, though. I think he may be one of those. And with the volume of talented youngsters we've brought in over the last three years, he may simply be overtaken by those with both the ability and the self-confidence that is required of an AFL footballer.

I'm still hopeful, and quietly confident, that if anyone can get him firing on all cylinders it's Bolton.
