It's a reasonable theory to consider trading this years pick 3 for a pick in next years stronger draft, but given the practical difficulty in selling the idea to members/sponsors I'm not sure any list manager would have the nerve.

We still lack in a heap of areas. Need to bring in more talent this year. Come next years trade period we can always trade 2019 picks or other options if we need to. We simply can't stagnate and do little this year in the hope that next year may be better and I don't believe SOS will. He will be aggressive as ever

Josh Clayton. He has definitely got something about him.

I wouldn't say no to picking him up as a DFA.

If we wasted a senior list spot on Josh Clayton that's almost enough for me, I'm certain we won't but why? Can honestly say following the 2014 draft this guy was only on a list because of his father, he didn't stand out at school level in Brighton's premiership that year. His two AFL games were uninspiring and in reality should've been gone at the end of '16. We are better off taking a guy that hasn't been on an AFL list from the state league at the same age who hasn't been in a professional environment in hope of recruiting the next Ben Brown.

Wouldn't have a problem picking up Spencer on our rookie list. Gorringe likely to go and Korcheck done we need a R3 who has to be accomplished enough to step up and play AFL in 2018. It does raise, with Kreuzer (28) and Phillips (26) we'd probably be looking at drafting a 20-ish year-old developing ruck in either this year's or next years draft. Being a weak draft, if we can't land one this year Spencer would be a suitable filler for next season.

To get the opinions of more the patient draft watchers as opposed to the more impatient week to week type fans.

Would it be interesting to try to take the big bust/reward gamble this year with our Pick 3?

Take a team with big ambition and immediate NEED/HOPE for a good year next year and try to take advantage of them. I've always thought that has been a Hawthorn blueprint (to identify Clubs to take advantage of at the right time). Let's say we identify that Club as Collingwood.

I'm usually not a buyer of the oft used "wow, look at next years draft crop" spiel, but it seems patently obvious that next years top end picks look absolutely outstanding compared to most years and especially this years. So Pick 3 next year is worth a lot more than Pick 3 this year.

Sooooo.....what would we think about trading Pick 3 to Collingwood( or North) for their 1st rounder next year. It is a risk/reward type deal for both sides of the deal, but it might be a chance to take advantage of a "needy" Club who might think they can finish higher than they might.

The grand plan (for a hopefully patient club that has built a beautiful base so far...us) is to trade Gibbs for some draft presence this year, absorb another year of a lowish ladder position next year and hopefully hit the 2018 draft with 2 Top 5'ish picks who project to be really elite.

Say we trade Pick 3 to a Collingwood or a North who NEED and THINK they will finish higher but are a big chance not to, for their 2018 first. If the gamble pays big divs we swap Pick 3 this year for a Top 5 Pick next year. If it pays medium divs we swap Pick 3 this year for Pick 5-8 next year. If Pies or North do a Richmond like recovery we are stuffed lol.

But my theory is that a Pick 8 next year looks equivalent to a Pick 3 this year. So we wouldn't lose much there. But if the Pies or North fail and we get 2 Top 5'ers next year....it could be Premiership making.

That ended up a longer thought bubble than i envisaged. Anyone think it makes sense?

Certainly worth some thought

I would wait for the last few days of the trade period to see what other sides had acquired in terms of picks and players. The targets would be picks from the Saints or lower. If we held onto Gibbs, while adding the like of Kennedy, Smith, Balic etc, you could possible project a better than average rise, so it would be worthwhile.

Personally, unless Kelly nominated us, I would take pick 3 to the draft, which will get you a potential 250+ game player. If the plan was to trade players such as Gibbs, I would be looking to add as many picks in the top 20 next year as I could. Unless it was more picks in the top 10 this year
