How many games does Simpson need to reach 300 ?
Reckon they'll get him there next year and that's about all she wrote ...
14, but I think he'll play 18-20 games next year and then they'll make a call as to whether he goes around again.

I think he was super for us this year and last.

Just catching up with list changes now.
So read on Carlton site 3 more changes made yesterday.
So 7 gone from primary list of 40 and 3 gone from rookie list of 6 we had this season.
Add Lang, Kennedy and Lobbe to primary list brings us at 36 on primary list and 3 on rookie list.

We have picks 3, 10 , 30 and 73 for primary list in National Draft

Alex Silvagni, Kym LeBois and Glass-McCasker on rookie list.
I guess Alex Silvagni could be promoted to senior list too.

Nick Graham, Simon White and Boekhorst hold their spots.
Nick Graham probably held his spot based on fact Gibbs traded left us with not much midfield depth. Certainly increases his chances of time in actual engine room rather than pushed out to flanks and wings. At this stage though he is probably looked on as depth player and behind the likes of new guys Lang and Kennedy.

So getting my head back to now 3 more gone since last week. It now is 33 on primary list and 3 on rookie list at present.
Starting to think we might run with 38 on primary list and 6 or more on rookie list which gives room for at least 2 rookie list players to play in seniors during 2018 quite easily before any long term injury listings.
LeBois getting senior game into him would be nice to see at some point and if Alex Silvagni not upgraded to primary list he would be the other regular rookie list guy able to play seniors when needed.
Not sure we going to fill primary list up to 40 just for hell of it. Probably keep the space open for more draftees and possibly a big free agent sign up at end of 2018 rather than give new contracts out now just because we can.

Last 2-3 years some of the delistings have really shocked me .. but in a good way. I was so used to players who had the odd good game being re-signed to new 2 year deals, I just thought it was standard fare.

I love that we now make the hard calls rather than just giving 'em more time in the hope they show something we haven't seen yet. Sure, it might mean you miss out on a late bloomer or a Jones-freakish turnaround every now and then, but the overall benefit will blow that away.

Wow have we raised the minimum standard expected to stay at this footy club. I love it.

SOS and Co have raised the bar even further .... though .. you shouldn't have stopped where you did.

SOS ... OK Smedts you didn't work out ... grab ya paycheck on the way out ... you too Palmer ... you are not staying for another two years and taking development time from a kid. Gave you boys a shot, didn't work out. Good luck with your futures.

Games played in 2017 for players no longer on list:

Dennis Armfield: 5
Blaine Boekhorst: 7
Dylan Buckley: 1
Andrew Gallucci: 0
Billie Smedts: 9
Bryce Gibbs: 22
Ciaran Sheehan: 2
Daniel Gorringe: 0
Kristian Jaksch: 0
Liam Sumner: 4
Matthew Korcheck: 0
Rhys Palmer: 1
Simon White: 11

Or to put it another way, only two players played half or more of the potential games.

Gibbs and White.

Most of the players on this list are essentially unable to produce at AFL level, if they once could, it seems the match committee has no faith anymore.

HARKER and some other people re why delist someone before contract end knowing you will still pay for the cost of their salary in the cap?

I reckon it is as simple as the Club not allowed to go lower in salary cap spend next year - even if it wanted to - obviously there was a bit of war chest on display this year - with rumoured interest in all of Rockliff/Saad/Smith and Kelly....points to salary cap % available ..no?

It just gets bigger next year - Club almost forced to make pretty big spend(s).

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but there are now only 12 players remaining on our list from our wooden spoon year only two years ago before SOS took over.

Murphy, Kreuzer, Cripps, Docherty, Casboult, Jones, Graham, Simpson, Rowe, Byrne, Thomas and Curnow.

SOS has truly gutted this list to its bare foundations in order to create his masterpiece, a remarkable job from the great man.

The other standout there is that most of them are older guys.

Just goes to show how bad our youth and drafting/development was that only Cripps, Docherty, Graham & Byrne remain. And Graham only just survived this years cut.

Excellent point. Makes perfect sense now. Well thought out..........wish I could have done it. :)

Just re watching the Mullett replays .... I reckon he won't be playing in defence. Wing/HFF. Great disposal efficiency and that's what we need to improve on ... accurate delivery to advantage into the F50. Or take the shot.

His long kicking enables to penetrate defensive zone pushes too. Could be a good win win here.

Happy with this if it eventuates.

Club knew they wouldn't see much if any senior action, so effectively we'd be paying them to train and play VFL. That's fine for younger players, but makes no sense for two players with a combined 17 years on an AFL list.

Bit of a sunk cost, but allows the coaching group 2 more players who might turned into good additions to the club/team.

Pretty clear from their limited gametime this year neither Smedts or Palmer were ever going to be long-term players for us.

Highlights do not show much of a defender.
Looks like a long kick though.

I don't reckon that's what Bolts/SOS has in mind. I reckon they will smash his tank out and try for Winger/HFF, Defensive line breaker.

Without looking back through the drafts I’d say Cripps is probably the only national draft pick we got right from 2008 to 2014. I think it was Parkin that said in 2015 that we had the worst list he’d ever seen, probably seemed harsh at the time but now I would say it was probably a fair call. Amazing how far we’ve come in only two years.

Ive heard from a good source that sos really likes young mason blakey. Huge rapts from everyone at NB including coach. Broke his hand at start of season and missed chunk of games but finished season strong. Even played in vfl side ontaining young promising types v u18 side and did really well.
Is an absolute smashing kid. Nephew of John.
Word is he mite b a smokey to be rookied.

Mullet has pace to burn and excellent left foot. Hff was rotating through the mid.
If memory serves me well, his defensive effort as a junior was outstanding. Chased tackled etc.
not so much for nmfc
Hoping he won’t be butter soft at CFC

Norf played him as a HBF..... much conjecture on the board as to his best position .....

Rebound 50 numbers were good but apparently his defensive contested game, especially aerial were poor.

Well done Simon White on getting the most out of yourself. Not the most skilled player and you had a bad run of injuries including a broken neck.

Boekhorst was much maligned and much of this resulted from the trades and the draft selection which brought him to our club. Simply not hard enough. Sometimes just didn’t know what to do with the footy when he had it.

Smedts just didn’t come off but was worth a try.

Apart from Gibbs, most of the players that have left Carlton as retired or delisted since the end of Season 2017 were in the bottom 10 or so players on our list: Armfield, Gorringe, Jaksch, Sumner, Palmer, Buckley, Smedts, White, Boekhorst (Senior List) and Gallucci, Sheehan and Korcheck (Rookie List).

Of the 3 Ins so far, I think Kennedy and Lang are in our best 22 and Lobbe serves as a handy backup (along with Phillips) if Kreuzer is injured.

We bring in Picks 3, 10, 30, 73 ... 113 (next pick after 95 which we traded) ...

And maybe a DFA or 2, Mullett is reported to be coming to us.

Next year we finish with the retirements and delist the rest of the bottom few ... Thomas and Rowe to retire, Kerridge and Graham delisted. Lamb I think holds his spot but we’ll see. Simpson I think will retire as well.

Where does that leave us after Season 2018 ... we have competition for spots in the Best 22, we have a group of 5-7 players who are stiff to miss out on the best 22 and we get draft picks for trading players who are not in our best 22 and go to other clubs.

My best 22 before DFA / Draft:

Plowman. Jones. Marchbank.
Docherty. Weitering. Williamson.
SPS. Ed Curnow. Cuningham.
Pickett. Casboult. Jack.
Charlie. McKay. Wright.

Kreuzer. Cripps. Murphy.

I. Kennedy. Simpson. Fisher. Lang.

Stiff not to be in the 22 (3): Byrne. Lamb. Macreadie.

So Thomas is no longer an automatic selection.

Every chance that Casboult, Simpson and and Wright will also get pushed out of the Best 22 by the end of Season 2018.

Opportunities for Polson, Kerr and our draftees if they take them.
