If we pick up two good mids and the Club has an ok run with injuries I can see a move up the ladder with 9- 10 wins not being a huge surprise. What will be missing is class in the forward lines - against better sides- you have to be able to kick around 15 goals to win. Carlton will lack the firepower to do so - Levi or not. Sure the occasional win can be manufactured without the forward line firepower required - but to ask a side to do this week in week out is unrealistic.

I dont think Charlie / Jack and Harry can carry the tall ask of a forward line at this stage of their development - they don't have 10 goals between them week in week out - really doesn't make any difference whether Levi is factored into this mix or not - or whether Weitering is asked to become 'THAT' CHF - the kids are too young and too small to do it week in week out.

A couple of years of drafting and trading to go and I think the FA big catch will be required to make the Club a genuine contender.

I think you will find even with adelaide, that their big 3 forwards do no average 10 goals per game or anything like it. Their goal kicking was spread over a lot of players. This was the case with the Hawks in their hey day as well.

Francis looks like he will be very very good.

I think I recall goreds saying he would be the best midfielder in that draft and could well have gone pick 1if it weren't for weiterings maturity.

Injuries are cruelling him at the moment and he is being made to earn his place through the VFL.

Langford reminds me of everitt in a few ways.. Skill is there.. But is the application?

Back to the Saints... Unless they do something special I think we will be ahead of them in two years.

More to it with Francis, hearing he could apply himself more to the cause! Character being called into question...

Definitely has the talent but...

I agree with you there.

You don't hold a guy back like that without reason

See what you're saying, but add Wright to that list and ten goals a game is not unrealistic. Also this season we seem to have a decent spread of mids kicking goals consistently. So I agree not quite there with the forward line but probably pretty close. I wonder if a Devon Smith might help?

Gibbs Cripps Murphy Charlie all spending time forward will make a massive difference. Improvement in SPS Pickett & Cuningham (maybe Raynor) will help a lot as well. Macreadie may become a realistic tall mobile option. Along with Weitering Jones and Marchbank there is a lot of flexibility and these days it can be invaluable.

Talent is talent and Yarran has more than most .
In a reported shallow draft , someone might roll the rookie draft dice and at only 26yo , if he puts in the work on the training track they might strike gold for very little outlay .

Talk is cheap - sadly I can't see it happening.

He struggled when he was well - ain't going to happen with all these land mines in his personal life.

Agree :thumbsu:. I still think 2019 is a bit early based on what other clubs have done and what it usually takes but it wouldn't surprise me for this group to be ahead of the curve. Also agree that the draft/trade period could make a big difference. SOS has a big few weeks ahead.

What really excites me is their ability to work hard defensively, do the basics and work to a game plan already. When Bolton thinks they are ready and releases the shackles watch out. There are some extremely exciting players amongst that lot.

Exciting times ahead ;)

Re "working to a game plan".

Not sure if this is due to SOS recruiting "footy smart" players or the coaching team or a combination of both.

Either way I am surprised these young guys have been able to implement a game plan so effectively in such a short period of time.

I see simpson and murphy dropping off a fraction. Murphy should be transitioned into the forward line with spells in the midfield. He has the ability to be a very damaging half forward and in an area of our weakness at the moment. Simpson could stay on a wing rather than HB with Byrne taking his place.
your comment about the quality of our kids is probably true. But the longer one observes AFL, the more one realizes that pure talent on its own is rarely enough. Even Judd was admired for his attitude, training, fitness and preparation. Cripps has taken it upon himself to excel in this regard as well before the arrival of BB. The elite players are elite because they were internally motivated as youngster ie habits learned really young have allowed them to fully capitalize on their innate talent which make them elite. Good to very good players can cruise along . Rarely do you get an elite talent transition like GAJ . I really believe that even if our players arent the most talented youngsters, what is far more important is their development under the coaches and how they are motivated, and that has completely turned 180 degrees since BB. We have gone from probably the worse to arguably the best with BB IMO. Our players are going to go past many young groups on the basis that we have a really good coaching team
Yeah. I would love to see Murphy transition into being a front and centre rover in the forward line. Its definitely an area we are lacking.

I am not at all surprised by this - you can't just bring in players like Lynch at the last minute because you think it's a good idea. A lot of ducks need to be lined up for this to happen.

And SOS is very good at lining up ducks!!!

SOS is ducking good!

He was very popular with the players and staff at the club, I for one would love to see him back in the fold, he was/is an exceptional talent...

I think the club is a very different place now.

Expectations and professionalism are at a much higher level - that's why Yarran was traded.

If Chris came back IMHO he would not cope with the demands.

Murphy still has a year or two in the midfield . Simpson just needs to be managed . People in here have been saying he is done . He has played fir years on end in a bottom team, week after week, rarely rotated off the bench . He needs the occasional game off and more breaks during the game but can still be a valuable HBF for a year or two yet .

He walked out on us and requested a trade.
Would he cope with the demands of an AFL footballer? I have no idea because I'm not close enough to him or the situation but I do doubt it

Even at this early stage and with the 'limited' knowledge we have of what teams may look like in March '18, what are your current expectations against the following teams, next year:

Brisbane:
North Melbourne:
West Coast:
St.Kilda:
Essendon:
Richmond:
Fremantle:
Collingwood:
Melbourne:
Gold Coast:

Beat those teams alone even once and we're already looking at tenth or better.
Of course it's impossible to project how much better our squad will be after the trade period, as much as it is for any other team but here are my reasons for confidence next year;

1. Many of the games we could have/should have won, slipped away from us in the last quarter. Too many young guys tiring.
2. We seem to have a cohesive group that genuinely play as a team.
3. I feel we have a better coaching group than many of the aforementioned teams.
4. The extra year should see growth in many of our young players. Which do you see going backwards? I see the step-up far higher than for any fall.

We'll need some injury 'luck' as Port Adelaide and Richmond have had this year, but I think our finishing range is far broader than a bottom three.
HARKER

We beat Richmond round 1.

I predict we beat all of those sides (which means we learn to win interstate) except Melbourne, unless:
- Other sides have a longer break before playing us (a feature of our draw this year since the bye), or
- We have successive 6 day breaks.

Couple of goes at our Best 22 for 2018 in last day or so, here's mine without trading and drafting ...

B. Docherty. Jones. Marchbank.

HB. Byrne. Weitering. Plowman.

C. Williamson. Cripps. SPS.

HF. Lamb. Charlie. Jack.

F. Pickett. Harry. Wright

R. Kreuzer. Gibbs. Murphy.

I. Ed. Macreadie. Fisher. Cuningham.

Stiff to miss: Simmo, Polson, Thomas, Kerr, Casboult
,
Back up: Phillips, Rowe, ASOS, White, Kerridge, Graham, Smedts, Palmer

Issues for me are the lack of midfield depth and class, ruck depth after Kreuzer and Phillips, who plays second ruck if we lose Casboult or if he is pushed out of the 22. and if Plowman will hold his place in the 22.
