Rubbish. Curnow has been taking 10+ marks a game. Hipwood struggles to get 5 touches. Not even in the same conversation. Hipwood has potential but come on...Curnow has actually performed hipwood has shown exciting signs

Thats impressive; had no idea he was racking up that many

A second year tall on track to kick 35 goals has done nothing? He would have won your goal kicking by round 15 last year.

Curnow is great but Hipwood is looking like something pretty special as well.

Come on you obviously haven't watched Curnow play this year. Hipwood will be an incredible footballer but based on performance this year Curnow will finish above him in the rising star. Curnow plays further up the ground than hipwood and is currently taking around 4 contested marks a game. From memory he is ranked 8th in the league for contested marks. An absolute freak in the air and on the ground. Has an enormous tank...He basically sprints up and down the wings. Finally his disposal efficiency is over 70...rarely wastes a touch.

Has he even been nominated?

I don't think he has, but that's probably as much about how other players are performing round-by-round and having that one big "standout" game as anything else.

Across the season, just feels like people are talking McGrath up as a star already, without even mentioning Houston, despite having similar outputs in similar roles.

Is it a bit of projection or prediction of the future, as in, McGrath is "supposed to be good', because he was the #1 pick, so people focus on him and pump him up more, ahead of untouted 19-year-old Rookie Draftee Houston?

Houston has been a very solid find and a brilliant rookie pick.

Don't undersell McGrath though just because of him being a number 1 pick though.

Of course I mustn't watch Curnow because I think he isn't that far infront of Hipwood. I'm stoked to see Curnow performing well as I wanted him and Francis in the draft, so him performing well validates my rating of him nicely. I just think in order to promote your boy you're vastly under selling Hipwood's year, he's performed galantly with less support than practically any forward in the competition. He's currently 26th in the competition for goals, he isn't only potential, he is delivering already.

Burton has played a large part of this season as our 2nd key defender along side Frawley early in the season and Brand more recently so any mention of cheap possessions as a halfback flanker is crap. Occasionally gets outmarked/ outsized against bigger forwards like Sinclair in the 1st minute last Friday but has generally held his own against these guys (e.g Taylor Walker twice) and loves to run off them at every opportunity. FWIW Curnow, Hipwood, McGrath and Burton (all potential A Graders) have far greater upside than SPP.

He's done it twice, and it was 10 & 11, I don't think you need "10+" in the convo, don't convey it like he does it every week.

He averages 6 marks a game which is still excellent for his age.

More worrying though is he's averaging under a goal a game.

At the end of the day, goals are what counts for a KPF, Hipwood is kicking them.

Averaging less than a goal only because he didn't kick one in his first 4 games this season.

He's then gone on to kick goals in 11 of the next 13 games, including 10 goals in the last 7 games, so goal kicking isn't really a concern. This despite him spending most of his time as a high half forward, racking up contested marks on the flanks and wings.

At least everyone is in agreement.

It's Burtons award. ;)

I think Burton's biggest advantage is that his two main competitors McGrath & SPP may be fighting each other for the 4 votes so his slight edge should get him over the line.

(Subject to remaining four games of course)

McGrath is slowing down (which is to be expected) SPP only had 10 possies on the weekend while Burton was once again in the top half a dozen players on the ground against Sydney.

Like I said weeks ago Burton wins the RS from Curnow and McGrath. The better players in time will be Curnow and Hipwood. They will be stars of the game.

How i see it

5 Burton

4 SPP (within chasing distance, something like a showdown medal would be great)
3 Mcgrath (can see him taking the 4 votes but not stealing it from Burton

2 Hipwood (will be tough on the Queenslander but i have him 4th best out of the eligble)

1 Caleb Marchbank (games will be tough, always better to finish strong rather than start strong and fade too)

Others than i think can possibly poll up to the 2 votes (in order)

Curnow, SPS, Witherden, Taranto, Houston, Milera, Hardwick

What an incredibly simplistic was too look at it. You're comparing stats for two guys playing very different roles against very different opposition. How many times has Curnow played the whole game on the oppositions best KPF? How many times has Hipwood played a high half forward role up the ground? How many times has Curnow played a full forward role? Honestly its a ridiculous post to make. I'm not saying one is better than the other, they clearly play different team roles, and their stats reflect that. One gets up the ground more and takes marks, has 57% of their possessions uncontested and averages less shots per game (not a real surprise). The other plays more KPF, has more shots on goal, gets 51% of his possessions in the contest, but gets less of the ball.

I haven't seen a lot of Carlton this year TBH so its hard for me to comment on who's had a more impressive season. Of course I'm a lions supporter so I will have my bias towards Hipwood built in despite my best efforts not to. I do tend to rate the ability to score that many goals as a second year KPF in a bottom side pretty highly, maybe a bit higher than having the tank to get up and down the ground and do the work Curnow does, but that's just my opinion. I certainly don't think they're that far apart in what they've shown this season in different roles and both have some traits you can't help get excited about.

Each of them have strengths and weaknesses in their games when compared to each other, and you could argue one over the other depending on how you rate the difficulty of each of their respective roles but to say that they're not close to each other as far as performance this year based on a few stats is crap and a lazy position to take.

Yeah no issue with Burton winning it, kid was a gun before the leg injury and he had a full year off and in the HFC program to get up to speed with the AFL, it's not like it's "shocking".

Props to him and for Hawthorn drafting him as it was a boom/bust pick.

Still massively happy with McGrath as he will be a gun and i'm sure everyone knows that. Love the young guys we are building up.

The AFL Coaches seem to think Powell-Pepper is the pretty clear standout.

Reckon the sheeplike ex leather chasers who vote on this thing will be happy to pretty much fall into line.

Given an evenish last 4 rounds, i reckon SPP can get ready to wipe his hair as he reads his prepared speech.
