Considering we're not required to use a future traded pick to match academy players and can use the next pick down, I tend to think they're not as linked as you may believe.
I really hope so. Just find it hard to believe that this is allowed.

Not even going to put any time into thinking about where Ballenden will get a bid on at this state. If we've learnt anything from past academy players it is that they tend to slip as the year goes on. At this same stage in their respective draft years Keays and Allison were rated as top 10 prospects. Ballenden hasn't exactly set the world on fire so far in the Div 2 champs from all reports.

Purely speculation, but after all the hype and success Hipwood has experienced as a KPF product from our academy to date (and you bet your life other clubs are watching), I wonder if Ballenden, as another highly rated tall from our academy, may generate some interest also, which may mean rival clubs may throw a bid at him earlier rather than later?

My unsolicited opinion.

All clubs will watch the U18 Championships, possibly with a closer eye on the Allies team, to rate the talent.

As others have mentioned, including Luke Power the national academy coach, Ballenden has been played down the back a bit early in the season for both the Lions and National academy, and by all reports he really hasn't performed well in defence.

If a Club bids early on Ballenden it will be because they rate him at that pick. Brisbane will then have to make a choice whether to match a bid or not. It will be an interesting test for Brisbane, that is for sure.

One guy that in hindsight we probably should have thrown a lifeline to, instead of Frost, is Alex Silvagni.

He has impressed the hell out of me in games this year. I honestly thought he may have been a chance to join the Lions this year once Freo chopped, but obviously we went Frost. Silvagni has that nasty streak a lot like Robertson and would have been great for our young defence.

As for Frost; what a mistake that trade is shaping up to be.

What are our trade options this year?

Unfortunately players that we would like to move on via trade have virtually zero trade currency ie. Bastinac, Bewick, Bell, C.Beams, Harwood. The players with trade value are our relatively older players eg. Rich or our younger brigade none of which I would be comfortable trading out.

I would be willing to trade out Stefan Martin, maybe a club in a flag window would be open to it. Then go into next season with Smith, McInerney, Ballenden (most likely) and then late draft, rookie or trade for a mature ruck from another club or the state leagues.

The other option is to trade our likely pick 1 for a couple of lower top 10-12 picks or how about our pick 1 + ports, say pick 12.

picks 1 and 12 for picks 4 and 7. Unless there is a clear standout number 1 I would be seriously considering it. Most drafts the best player is not the player selected at number 1 but is highly likely to be in the 1-10 range.

I had not considered Steph Martin as a trade option. I believe it is highly unlikely we are active during the trade period, unless it is to acquire draft picks, or a player asks to be traded out of Brisbane or a good player for some inexplicable reason asks to be traded to Brisbane. But Steph or McInerney could certainly be on the table if we're after draft picks.

As I mentioned in the draft thread, if we were to trade pick 1 or 1 & 12 for two top 10 picks, we're likely going to have to trade with multiple teams and probably include other draft picks as well (our second round pick and Collingwood's 3rd round pick).

Really depends on what types of players other teams are after at the top end of the draft. If teams are after a genuine KPF/Ruck option, or a scoring general forward type, or a genuine top class third tall type. If one of LDU, Fogarty or Rayner was guaranteed to be there at 4 and if O'Brien was guaranteed to be there at 7, I'd do it in a heart beat. As long as if we have to carry a first round draft debt in to 2018 it is only a maximum 300 points.

If the AFL bring in on the night trading of live draft picks and players drafted on the night, I could actually see us trading for two specific top 10 players as being possible. Especially if we're happy to walk away from the draft with players X, Y from the top 10, and academy players Ballenden and Jack Payne.

Dodongo wanted to trade Stef Martin and Daniel Rich a few years back when they had higher currency. Dodongo knows they are not part of our next premiership team so we should trade for something that will be. Dodongo thinks Stef will still be of good value though, but not what he was 2 years ago.

Yeah we missed our chance to trade out Stef when we pushed Leuey out instead. Not sure we'd get a second rounder for him. Definitely shouldn't push him out after he showed faith in us and signed for 4 years.

Dodongo is [was] correct.

Definitely don't think we should trade Stef or Rich.

Of our senior players, the only one who'd go is Rockliff. Assuming we sign up Schache on a big contract, I wouldn't be surprised to see Rock offered more by someone in a flag window. We'd net a first rounder for him which would need to be top 10 to make it viable. If he keeps his form up I wouldn't be surprised if he did. AA form easily. Could even be top 15 in the Brownlow.

I wouldn't be surprised if we net a pick after our first for Rockliff as a disguised PP if say a decent trade can't be met.

Of course that's not to say Rock should go - his form and attitude on and off the field has improved dramatically.

Trading Stef still an option - he's still got the girlfriend who wants to work in melbourne (I assume), so we could do a Sam Mitchell-esque trade for the player's post footy life. Stef's pretty old after all.

Partially agree with you Nunez. Rocky shouldn't have to go, definitely picked up this year. Only problem is, he's closer to 30 than 20. Raises queries for me as to whether he's worth letting go for FA compo just because he's not likely to be a finals player for us.

If you go back and look at what the Hawks did after Clarkos first year I wouldn't be surprised to see a few senior players put on the trade table.

Assuming that we keep our kids. Also, what senior players would we get decent picks for? Rocky? Zorko? Bundy? Rich?

We can't afford to lose too many.

I'd be putting Rich up for trade and I think Rocky will probably leave. Stef also an option if he wants to head back to Melbourne.

Rich would get us an end of first round pick, Stef early second round and Rocky could potentially get us a pick straight after our first.

Would the Rich and Stef picks make much of a difference?

Could use one of them to get someone like Himmelberg.

Who? Our biggest issue isn't getting young talent, it's keeping it and this should play a big role in any trades. Will trading out half of our experienced A/B graders help keep our young group together?

I'm not sure trading Rich for Himmelberg will really help.
