I dunno that many of our fringe players will get a go at another club. Even someone like Green, who had been a fairly regular senior performer until his last year with us, was only picked up on a one year contract as a delisted free agent. It isn't as though Close has had a breakthrough game that would allow a recruiter to see what he's capable of. In the main, his best performances have been solid rather than spectacular.

Combine all that with the likelihood that we'll see a few tall forwards on the market this year and I think Close might end up outside the AFL system.

Look at Xavier Richards going from playing in a grand final to losing his place on an AFL list.

I'd say it was unlikely Close or Harwood got a second chance.

I would keep both.

Close has value, he is only 22 his best is still 3-4 years away. I thought he went ok today and played his role.

Harzy can become a goal kicking defensive small fwd. His skill level is streets ahead of Barrett and Harzy is only 25. If he has some luck with injury he still has plenty to offer.

I would think Beams, Jansen, Freeman, Clayton would be the likely delistings, with a couple of players contracted for next year unloaded if possible. The rookie list will be cleaned out with Hammer getting listed, Hanley if he can be rookied again and the others going.

I'd keep Close. Not sure about Harwood or Hammelmann.

One thing people should be looking at is the depth of this years draft when discussing how many list spots the Lions look to open up.

Also potential playing time for all our current youngsters and new draftees.

Is there likely to be any delistings from other clubs we might look to pick up.

Hammer could turn into a very good player, his body is a little immature but he still has a lot of upside.

Guys the size of Hammer, Close and Schache with the running ability they have don't grow on trees. I think we would discard any of them prematurely at our own peril.

Freeman on the other hand...

We will be looking to go with our top 20 picks (at least 3), trade in Cameron with the next pick and upgrade Hammer with a late pick.

There might be a Savage or Whitecross type come in, but that will have to be on our terms.

We need at least 5 spots on the main list, the rookie list gets cleared imo bar Hanley, if we can keep him there.

I just dont think we've seen enough improvement in Hammer over 3 years. He's still way too small and a long way off becoming an AFL footballer with younger guys overtaking him.

Disagree. Some guys are men at 14-15 (especially islanders) and some take a while to fill out. He will be fine and is worth persisting with.

He's only 21 he might not fill out until 23-24.

12 games off the rookie list also suggest the club rates him also.

He was the lowest B & F vote getter per game last year and I'd suggest he will be this year. 12 bad games at AFL level doesn't count for much.

We'll add Ballenden and Payne this off season and we're already top heavy. There just isn't a spot for him going forward unless we lose a few.

Yeah I think Hammer will be gone by years end too.

Close and Freeman would net us something at the trade table. We are stocked for KPP for the next 10 years after this draft. Some have to be moved on and I think Hammer, Close and Freeman will all go.

Jake Barrett will be the first player upgraded from the rookie list given the number of games he's played this season. I'm also in favour of Hammer being upgraded, if we can find a spot. Close is ahead of him in my opinion to be retained or at least offered a rookie spot if he doesn't get an offer elsewhere. We need Close for depth. Given the relative strength of this year's draft at the bottom end, we'd be mad to clear out the rookie list. Need to keep Big O, Hinge, William, Hanley (if the AFL will let us because of injury) and Grewar. Eagles is an interesting case, he could be another Podsiadly if given the opportunity and seems to offer a fair bit more than Frost.

I agree with your probable delsitings, but would add Frost to that list if there was a way of paying out his contract. But I also think that decisions won't be made until after the NEAFL finals and that all these players still have time to save their careers, if they play superb team football.

I forgot about the big O , he stays.

Not sure about Payne. Looks too slow from what I've seen at the NEAFL. Maybe a rookie spot if no one else takes him. I'd prefer upgrading Hammer with a late pick rather than taking Payne there. The game is now too fast for lumbering key position players. Hammer can run off half back and also lead well. Worth another year at least.

Next year Cat A rookies can play without being upgraded due to injury etc (they just get paid less). Wouldn't be opposed to Barrett staying on the rookie list for another year but getting similar game time to this year. I'd also keep Hinge, Grewar and McInerney as you can never have too much midfield/ruck depth and having continuity in our NEAFL team can only be good for the club overall. Hanley stays if we can invoke some kind of clause with the AFL due how much of his time as a rookie he spent injured, otherwise I think he (unfortunately) goes because we can't afford a list spot for someone so speculative this year.

William I think is a possibility to be delisted which is a shame since I'd love him to succeed but his off-field attitude has been lacking and he still hasn't developed a defensive mindset based on his efforts in the NEAFL. I also think Hammelmann will be gone since he's realistically behind Schache/Hipwood/Close as well as guys like Walker, McStay and Skinner who can play forward and back and generally offer more around the ground, plus we're likely to pick up Ballenden. He's shown enough that he may get re-rookied elsewhere by a club desperate for tall forward depth, although that would depend obviously on his willingness to move interstate.

I really don't know about Barrett, he is a trier, but I don't think he warrants a spot on the full list at this point.

If christensen or robbo were fit or Harzy had continuity, would Barrett be getting a game as a defensive forward?

One thing people should be looking at is the depth of this years draft when discussing how many list spots the Lions look to open up.

The depth of any draft is misleading. Let's say the consensus is that the draft falls away after the first 30 players. Does that mean that picks after #30 aren't worth much? No, because while every recruiter or "expert" might have a group of 30 draftable players, that group of 30 will differ between different people. If 10 players are selected that the Lions don't rate or don't want, that instantly makes the draft 10 deeper from our perspective. Given we have very clearly defined draft needs this year, plus at least one Academy prospect, I believe picks in the late second and third rounds have increased value to us. With the openness of trading these days compared to in the past, it is fairly easy to trade your way into the draft position you want.

Furthermore, as a club, we don't always march to the same beat as the "consensus". It is dangerous to assume that our club buys into the majority view.

Think you guys need a few experienced players to balance the list. I’m sure you don’t want to settle for other teams discards but gonna throw out Jeremy Laidler as a name I think could be a good fit for the Lions. Can’t seem to make his way into the Swans line up this year in defence and is a solid no nonsense back man doing very well in the NEAFL. He lacks pace but reads the game very well and is a good intercept mark. You have the making of a very good defence but think you need an old head and he comes from a team with statistically speaking a very good defence over the last number of years.

I don't think the players in our defence are the problem. Andrews and McStay are 2 very good young KPD's and we have some [retty good running half backers, still need a lock down small defender tho. The issue is up the field imo. They aren't pushing back hard enough and leaving their opponents with no pressure to kick. I don't know much about Laidler but imo, l would prefer to continue to develop our players and back them in. If we had someone like Hodge, maybe but he is retiring.

If you look at stats (Not that they are everything) you guys can usually kick a score but you can't always defend one. Laidler is aggressive and most of all good to have around younger blokes who feel a bit more at ease if they know someone is there to push and shove when required. You may be right though, come next year you may show enough improvement where the defence isn’t so under the pump and another off season for Harris Andrews in the gym. Watching right now as it is I would call him a good fit. But you would know your list better than I even though I watch every Brisbane game. I don’t look at the twos or anything beyond game day.

Always rated Laidler. His Dad worked at my local driving range and said if he won a flag with Sydney he was going to take a picture of Jeremy holding the cup and send it to Malthouse.

Think he would be a good fit, certainly a better option than playing Walker in defence.

Given Barrett can automatically play next year as a category A rookie, we might just keep him as a rookie. He's in a different age bracket from Christensen, Robbo and Harwood and can still develop. Would be very surprised to see him delisted after 13+ games in 2017.

4 new players on the senior list and one or two new rookies is enough change. There's no need to turn over 10 or more players every year... better not to in my view, though I'm happy to back whatever Fagan and co want to do.

Looking at our contracted players not getting a game, I wouldn't at all be surprised if we looked on moving guys such as Paparone and Bewick (both contracted next year) if anyone showed interest. Whilst I consider it unlikely anyone would come knocking for Bewick; Paparone may be an interesting proposition for a club such as Fremantle (the obvious one) and someone that I think the club may move on cheaply to free up list space.

Our midfield is more to blame for scores conceded than our defence.

Noble will know what he wants, a little depends on Rocky and who may fall our way.
