Denham also said Cameron will get done for a futures pick...........not stipulating which round.

I really don't see why we'd do that when we have 18 (and potentially 19 too) which we could trade directly or downgrade to GC for two picks in the twenties if we were really keen to get it done this year.

Having four rucks is/was usually viewed as pretty standard:
  1. Senior ruck
  2. Backup ruck
  3. Developmental ruck
  4. Rookie lottery ticket ruck
Funnily enough a Lobbe-style player would fit that to a tee - Martin; Lobbe; Smith; McInernary. Not too long ago we had Leuenberger; West & Martin; Smith. We're actually running fewer rucks than normal at the moment.

I'd dispute that given we've already seen Lever confirming pay rates on his offer from Melbourne, Geelong and Ablett both confirming they're interested in a trade, Kennedy nominating Carlton, and so on.
Could we get Lobbe on the Monday and trade him on the Friday say to gws for Kennedy or Sydney for Daniels?

No one has mentioned Eagles in this discussion or Ballenden. I would argue that the game is changing with both grand final sides playing one dominant ruck. (I realise Jenkins can ruck, but I can't recall him at the centre bounces). I don't think we need any more than 3 pure rucks, plus a number of ruck forwards. If drafting goes as everyone assumes, then we'd have Eagles, Ballenden and Walker as potential forward/rucks, plus the other 3 (Martin, Big O and Archie). I realise Eagles played most of the year in defence, but he did go into the ruck in the prelim or one of the last games of the season. His great contested marking, and aggressive attack on the ball, which was on display in the grand final, would work really well in the forward line.

I'm not in favour of Lobbe, though I can't really remember his form, so maybe? It's been evident that the twos play the same game style as the ones, except that for many games this year we had 4 talls in the forward line (Hammer, Close, Freeman and Archie/Big O). Not good for development. Time to develop some decent small crumbing forwards and pressure in the forward half. I wouldn't be adding another ruck until Martin retires, or is traded (which sounds unlikely.) And I've read your well researched posts about other AFL teams, but I think versatility is now more important than pure rucks.

Can't re-trade a player in the one trade period.

As you note, one played KPD the whole year and the other isn't on our list. Neither address the position of "mature backup ruck".

The club has been looking for a mature backup ruck since Leuenberger left and have been knocked back repeatedly. Lobbe is probably yet another attempt to address that, and if it does happen to involve effectively trading picks 18 and something else (in the Lobbe trade) for pick 2, because of the suggested increase in Rocky's contract, well that's a nice touch.

Yeah it seems to be going against all the current trends of speed, agility and pressure. For these reasons I would be moving on or out Close, Hammelman and Archie or Oscar if we are going to bring in Ballenden n Lobbe. I think someone like Bonar is the perfect size to come in and add a bit of athleticism, strength n pressure to our team. He could be our 2nd ruck at our next premiership. Give Eagles 1 more year to examine x factor.

Sure if Lobbe is a way of nabbing pick 2 compensation then it's probably worth it. And I can see the difference between a ruck with AFL experience and one without. And currently Big Oscar and Eagles are not confirmed on our list either, though I hope we retain them. But I would still prefer to not have so many rucks and KPFs on the list... I think their importance is dimishing as demonstrated by the mobility of the last 2 premiership sides.

Melbourne News reported PA Trengrove will be announced a doggie next week.

Surprisingly on ch9 Fagan was the lead story talking about Hodge coming.

If it nets us pick 2 then l am all for it. However, this all sounds like pure gobbledey goop. 1 article says a "northern club" might be interested in Lobbe and then someone sprouts at a conspiracy where we pay his salary and this increases their money for a higher pick. How often would this happen?

The one thing that will never cease to amaze me is how much analysis we put into every single move. None/most of us aren’t privy to the trade and draft strategy of the club and there’s a consistent message from every AFL club including our own - Judge the club by the whole body of work across the period, not each single trade/draft selection.

It's a discussion board about the Lions. If we could all just say nothing on anything until it's happened than this place would be empty and dull. I enjoy reading people's opinions and analysis on footy matters even if I personally think it's hogwash.

Totally agree! There are just a few posts here and there that are all doom and gloom about a specific trade or potential trade that are a bit over the top. At the end of the day we don’t know right now that a small move may lead to a bigger move. Hyperbole like “the club is off their heads for trading X for X pick” is tiring. Discussion about the merits of the players we could potentially bring in and the mechanisms to get us them are very interesting.

we don't need to get a pick for close for him to earn us points. Could do it for a pick upgrade say Close + 70 for 60. (forgetting the pick numbers and which team has them as so many will change hands this trade period)

I had been thinking about 'salary dumps' in AFL more with respect to Tippett than Lobbe recently. Its common in the NBA.

Something like we take Tippet and Pick 31 for our pick 41. (valuing tippet and his contract at -200 draft points (pick 55ish). North Melbourne could potentially do similar with a 1 year salary this year given they've missed out on every man and his dog.

The Lobbe situation is interesting and sounds good to me. Although I can't see the AFL signing off on it to give us Pick 2.

With Rocky going and getting band 2 could probably justify an end of first round PP though. They will give us band 1 if they deny us a PP and we take Lobbe/Rocky gets offered a good amount.

that annoying time of year when tweets are really worth reading but some of us are on work computers where social media is blocked. can people over the next couple of weeks please remember to copy these tweets so those of us who are on computers with tweets blocked

a few people are now coming out and blasting Lever for leaving and choosing his preferred club... wish we had that when we lost the GH5 + Aish. At least it would have made me appreciate the AFL world at least cared enough about the Lions to give a shit.
Only when it happens to one of the bigger clubs! Does it become a problem.
