If people haven't twigged by now, the evidence that we're instigating a real moneyball approach is mounting. Players will not be paid above what they're worth from this point on and $50K of salary cap money is viewed as a big deal. This is what it looks like as a professionals in charge. So we're going after an experienced mid and yet we just let one walk out the door without matching an offer, netting us a bullshit pick that didn't reflect the player's worth.

Free agency compensation was never intended to give the club back equal value to the players worth. It's very dependent on your finishing position i.e band 1 compo can range from pick 2 to pick 19. There has been the odd occasion where it works in a clubs favour (Frawley) but generally it doesn't (Franklin).

Seriously, do you not read some of the first hand information posted in the Schache thread. Forcing Schache to honour his contract at the Lions might just be about worst thing the club could do.

We're not letting him walk out the door. We're looking out for the kids best interests.

There are other options I.e. putting him on the rookie list and allowing him the opportunity to spend greater periods at home or let him sit out a year and see if he wants to return the following year. Simply flicking him out the door isn’t the only option.

Problem is how many list spots are we going to have available to bank picks for ballenden. Can only take as many picks as list spots available to the draft.

Yep, this will have to be managed. I'm expecting us to take 5 picks into the draft ... 2 live picks to use before Ballenden, 2 picks to use on the Ballenden bid (as insurance to cover any higher than expected bid) 1 additional draft pick after the Ballenden bid. Means we need to have 5 list spots available come daft day.

We currently have 5 senior spots available including Rockliff but with Hodge and possibly Cameron coming in means we need to free up at least another 2 more spots on the senior list. One will probably be Schache and the other possibly C Beams or Close.

Assuming 18 or 19 is accepted for Cameron this means we need to do a swap of some remaining draft pick(s) to gain an extra pick to use on the Ballenden bid.
