My view on Gaff is it all comes down to what he wants to do long term. If he wants to leave at some stage, then trading him now is the best option. If he is keen to stay then we should try and sign him up long term now. But if we trade Gaff, it has to be a fair deal and St Kilda would seem the best option. As good as Gaff is, he is replaceable given his style of play and a more rounded mid may improve our team dynamics (although any draft could of course be a bust).

A view on Gaff that some on here share (and others don't).

I'm in that camp. As Keys says:
Gaff is a complimentary midfielder- very damaging as an outlet option getting into space and can hurt sides through weight of possession. He isn't the type of mid that can change the course of a game though
He's quite one dimensional in that he isn't used a rebounder, goal-kicker, or inside mid either. So for teams chasing that link man, the club should be listening to offers and should be looking for a first round pick and best 22 player. If another team is prepared to meat that then conversations with Gaff about moving have to start.

Carlton’s second pick is 38, isn’t it? Fremantle does not have a second round pick. NM with pick 21 is a problem otherwise use pick 30 on Kelly?

Normally you wouldn't do that pick 30 but our midfield is in average shape ....I think we will have a couple of players ie Hayden Schloithe also and take best available between Kelly and Schloithe at pick 48 or 67 .
Likely to be sliders in the draft at pick 30 that will be too good to not draft anyway .

Kelly looks good but been six years in the making before being drafted we will take Schloithe if Kelly is gone later in the draft at a guess .

Is it me or are we all starting to feel a cloud of despair fall over us.

It's getting a bit depressing seeing all these talented players head back to Victoria but any of ours dont want to touch us with a metre pole. Not to mention thst the squad is already in a precarious situation. Relying on the draft isnt a safe option either due to our recent history with ******* vozzo and obrien

Really hope we pull some magic but this whole reliance on the draft has me very uneasy.

Yes, it's just you, oh and probably most of this board, so no, it won't just be you. Rather unfortunately we have another couple of weeks of the sky is falling ahead of us.....

Was thinking - does a player missing the various Combines effect the Draft price paid to get him?
Maybe for younger, unproven players - to some extent; for Kelly, however, I doubt it. His class was on show for all to see throughout the season proper.

Combine is an over hyped event used mainly as another avenue for the AFL to get more sponsorship $$$ from gulible corporate cheifs. Other than player meetings most good recruiting teams take little out of the combine.

Teams that were interested would be highly likely to have already done their homework. But those that weren't that keen originally - I assume a good performance at a Combine. .. surely that would get them looking back at him.

What's the view on Callan England? I've seen his name pop up but haven't seen much of him. He seems to divide some posters, some suggest he's a reasonable talent while others don't think he will get drafted. What's his skill set?

Read an article of him this morning apparently he is very athletic and fit... Nothing about his skills though..

Sumich was on trade radio yesterday and spoke about him as a bit of a draft smokey. Thought at his best he could become a player much like Gaff.

Funny he says that because in my mind I had compared him to Gaff, not overly damaging, not in bursts anyway. Swans tagged him out of the game I watched but they still beat us.

I have seen a bit of him at Claremont and U18. His point of difference is his pace. Smallish frame but he gets separation from the contest. His kicking is OK - improved during the carnival once he got the faster pace of the game.

Draft wise - I see him as a late pick or rookie.

You're not talking about the Qualifying Final are you? He dominated that game in the first half and in his only other game against Swans he got 32 touches.

He is a much better option than his team mate Patmore who gets all the attention.

I would love to see us come out and publicly headhunt someone for once. I know a lot of things must be going on behind closed boardroom doors, but i can never remember a situation where a guy has come available and we have made a public play for them

I'm in the trade Gaff camp. Really want Saints 8 and Acres ( dreaming? maybe a late pick back to Saints ) Pick up Ah Chee. Two big fellas in the midfield with good skills and can take a mark in the forward line. Go to the draft with 2 first round picks, Pick up Kelly for 30 ? Venables to come in. Rebuild fast tracked with younger players . Then I woke up.

We tried to move him on last year and he refused
But that was when he thought he was a starting 22. Given how much WAFL he played, it is worth another go. Problem is his missus wears the pants so she is quite a socialite around Perth and probably holding back any move.
