He is a HBF. He is a Saints player already. He probably needs at least 700k to leave if we offer 600K. We don't want to overpay our own players. 700k is at least 100k to much for him. We have plenty in the cap but that doesn't mean we need to give every good player more than they deserve.

He's not just a half back flanker. Hes a bloody good half back flanker! AA form. I put him in the top 5 or 6 in the league. Why do people think he's getting chased?

But surely the idea of list management is to improve the quality of your list. Kelly is player who has had around 20 to 30 games as an elite outside mid. Roberson is an elite running back. I don't think Dal is very realistic on salaries, he often says that certain players are only worth about half of what the media suggest. Backs traditionally don't get forward or mid money but Scott Lucas said Rance would be worth over $1 million PA and he's an actual player manager. Guys like Roberton are more like mids than those stodgy Jamie Shannahan style plodders.

I can't see how paying huge money to get in a quality kid on huge money while jettisoning one of your best players over $100,000 extra would be sensible.

You basically lose a top 5 player who took $700,000 a year for a guy on $1.4 million -means we really are break even or very slightly ahead but paying heaps more. Much more likely to lose quality players later on too.

We should just pay Robbo $1.5 in his first contract year then a pittance later.

Don't agree but Bains will do the right thing by the club with both Kelly and Roberton. If that's paying 700k then so be it. If its not then so be it. And I don't agree about this top 5 players thing. Is Carlisle a top 5 player. Is Brown a top 5 player. Is Geary a top 5 player?

But you'd pay $1.4 per year for Kelly who would walk up be a top 5 player at the club......just like Roberton. Seems like bad management to lose him over $50 grand or something but then go all in on someone else gun. I'm not a genius but can you tell me why that is a good idea?

The thing is though half back flankers are only able to be that good because of the key position defenders. While they are important they are not in the top 5 most important players in the team.

No denying that Robbo is an excellent player but he not a key player and he isn't as versatile as other players. Lets not go too overboard with payment here.

Robbo wouldn't be playing so well if it wasn't for Jake and Browny taking the talls this year.
700k is top money for a floating HBF. He is an interceptor more than a running HB too

I was listened to Dal on SEN a couple of weeks back and he said Rance was the best back and he would pay him around 800k. Sounded slightly low to me but around the mark. Based on that and what people believe JJ just signed for I reckon Robbo is at best a 600K player. That would be my limit. If we lose him with that huge wage then That's life. He cant earn more than Steven who is our best player in a really vital position.

See you do know the impact of overpaying and having structure in relation to your list management.

JJ is a norm smith medalist and premiership player. Deserves more cash than Robbo, hope we keep him but maybe 550 a year for Robbo

You don't build premiership lists by leaking AA players like Dylan Roberton. He'll re-sign it's just the usual song and dance in what is his most important contract of his career

I hope we play the game here but I also hope we look after him. I think he's a genuine good bloke and I think he should retire a saint with financial security

So there is plenty of love for Roberton at 600 thousand and some change but not much more.

That means the Hawks would need to stump up around 700 thousand to get him to move, agents fees and taxes not much left for robbo if it's less.

Now we have all assumed it's the cash, Roberton is 26 and maybe this is his last chance at a big payday.

Maybe it's the number of years that is the sticking point, maybe we want three and he wants five. Who knows it could just as easily be something like that. Do we want a 31 year old halfback on 600 thousand.

Remember what happened the last time we re-contracted a previously solid player during their first elite year? They crashed hard the next year and are now burning an injury-induced hole in the salary cap, to the tune of well over $500K. And that player was near on brownlow form in a position which we severely lack and is difficult to play; not an easy position where we are stacked.

Roberton is a HBF with a history of problematic ankle injuries. If this was his second or third year of playing at this level, then it would absolutely be worth the money we can assume he is asking. But he isn't some young gun that has been showing signs of building up to this point - probability would tell you that this year is a statistical outlier; not some miraculous skyrocket in his 'expected form'. So, not only is it likely that he will not continue to play like this, but you have the old ACME anvil dangling over the list management team's head, ready to drop as soon as his ankle flares up.

If the rumours are true about the club and the Roberton camp being some ways apart, then I would suggest that the club are probably offering a fair value. Let another club overpay, take the solid trade value, and then either fill his absence with one of our plethora of HBF options, or bring in the like of Lever via trade, or Pittard via FA.

Roberton for $600k per year is a no brainer. 2015 he was very good and not far off his output this year. 2016 wasn't exactly terrible either.

He's an incredibly crucial cog in our ever improving team and it would be criminal to let him walk. We just simply have to sign him up.

It's impossible to truly pass judgement without knowing our exact salary cap position, but imo Robbo is in our top 10 important players, and should be paid accordingly.
