2018 Best 22

That backline has so much potential to be so good for a long time. Need to get them playing together as much as possible so they gel, learn each others games and develop together.
Getting 20-30 games into that unit will reap reward.

Only play Spurr and Johnson when their are injuries.

I see it more like this:

Logue, Hamling Hughes
Wilson Pearce Ryan
Hill Blakely Hill
Bennell Cox Fyfe
Matera Taberner Walters

Darcy Mundy Neale

Cerra, Brayshaw, Crowden McCarthy/Kersten/Dixon/Switkowski/Ballantyne

Reds rotating midfield

Logue, Hamling Hughes
Wilson A Pearce Ryan
Hill Blakely Hill
Banfield Taberner Mundy
Matera McCarthy Walters

Sandilands Fyfe Neale

Brayshaw, Tucker, Langdon, Darcy

Can't really justify Cerra, but soon enough he should be fast-tracked.

Not ideal having Darcy and Sandilands together, but it is more about the transition of our list.

Blakely midfield makes it much more comfortable to consider Fyfe and Mundy rolling forward, and Hughes can handle the defense i think.

Not considering Bennell for now.

I like most of it but I don't think (based on pre-season) that Tucker or Langdon should be in. Tucker can't find it and Langdon can't hit a target by foot.

I'd go the exact same if I was picking the team, but realistically I think that Ballantyne and Johnson (and possibly Spurr) will play round 1, and Darcy will be left out for either Cox or Kersten. Don't expect to see Bennell until round 3 at the earliest.

I'm not really fussed about round 1, and I think some posters on here are way to eager to see change.

A good return for any first year player is 5-10 games, but a decent wafl season is also a positive step. For second year players perhaps double that. And I also think it is far better for those games to come after the first half a dozen games, with the old heads taking some of the heat out of the first part of the season, while filtering the new boys in. The most important thing is that when they do get an opportunity they are actually ready for it and can have a positive impact.

The only older player I don't want to see is D Pearce, but I don't see much value in Ballantyne either. The others can play a role as required, and provide a bit of stability in the short-term.

We're not gonna go with Kersten/MCCarth/Tabs are we ?

Unless Cam is used more in the Mayne role and goes up to ground. Kersten on the opposite wing? Tabs' strength is also leading up the ground using his tank, strength to grab the mark.

I would, its not like the flanker who plays instead of one of them is gun. At least all three of them can kick goals.

Tabs had time in the ruck today

What we will likely see is only one of Sandi / Darcy this season with our key forward (tabs / Apeness?) playing that second ruck.

Leaving Kersten / McCarthy playing those 2/3 talls

The problem with McCarthy, Kersten and Taberner is that both Fyfe and Mundy look great forward, and we have some emerging midfield depth. We probably get better value only playing two of those guys and selecting an extra midfielder.

As purplerunsdeep points out though, Taberner did spend time in the ruck, and was ok. A few options available.

Next JLT I wonder if Sandilands will be rested, and we bring in either Meek or Jones. Not much point watching Sandilands pantsing the WC rucks again.

Good lineup, but I also don't get the feeling that we are going into round one with both Sandi and Darcy. Unfortunately one of the old "favourites" will probably get the gig.

Watching our last two games, I’m working more on “if you can’t kick, no play”
Pearce, Sheridan etc wouldn’t play unless needed through injury. As in North and Crowden would play every time they were fit before these two got a game

The problem is though, when he went in the ruck we were left with no marking targets forward. It really needs to be simultaneous with Fyfe going forward if that's going to be the plan.

Cerra and Kersten both played?

Cerra barely played, and certainly not enough to say he should be picked. He hasn't shown that he has the game plan down, has not displayed full game fitness, and he had almost the least impact of any of our players out there. A scratch match against a weak opposition, not even a legit pre-season game. No issues with any of that, but why would would you chuck him into an AFL game, let alone best 22, with that kind of preparation?

I think Kersten is a legitimate option for someone's best 22. No issues with him.

I don't think that is an issue. The resting ruck can roll forward, or as you say Fufe (or Mundy). It is for a pretty minimal period of game time in the end. Helps to be less predictable.

Clearly assume he plays next week, which I think he will. Also don't expect him to play anymore than 60% game time in the season proper.

Also if we are going to rule blokes out for lack of fitness/gametime, how does Logue get in the team having missed training and playing no preseason? FTR I definitely want Logue in.

It isn't meant to be a round 1 team. Logue is our best player for the position he plays. There is nothing to say Cerra is, apart from his draft position, but so far he has zero runs on the board, Logue has a few games under his belt, an extra pre-season, and isn't competing with more established midfielders for a spot.

It is obviously quite a big deal for you that I don't have him in my best 22. If Logue is ready for round 1, he is a definite starter for me, Cerra wouldn't be. Brayshaw and Banfield have forced their way in with persuasive pre-seasons. Cerra is a little behind that having come off injuries, but he'll put his case soon enough. But there's no hurry. I think our best 22 is fluid at this point in time.
