If they want to stop out this sort of thing, they can't just go hard when the outcome is bad. They need to go hard at general out of play actions, regardless of how severe the final impact is.

Absolutely this. If they really want to stamp this out they have to remove any incentive to rough house even if there is no serious bodily harm caused.

Andrew Gaff has been referred directly to the AFL Tribunal. The Match Review Officer has graded Gaff's off-the-ball strike on Andrew Brayshaw as intentional conduct with severe impact to the head.

Ugh now I have to agree with Damien Barrett, who thinks that the AFL hold some responsibility for not going harder on punches in general. Players are swinging knowing that they'll probably get a fine. Regardless of Gaff's intentions in this particular instance, the system will inevitably lead to a player copping serious injury.

I agree with this 100%. I got a chance to watch the footy all day Saturday, and it was bloody annoying to see players constantly getting into those who had missed goals, had goals kicked on them, had seen the ball over the line first, etc. No need for it from any club.
