Fair play

My criticism of shiel (even in his prime) was he turned it over too much and was a big fan of bombing it long. They seem to have the same of sheed.

I wouldn’t be interested personally
It's all opinion. He struggled early in the year.

I think the clubs priority at the moment is nailing the draft picks and trying to win next year so a lot can happen in that time so although the Coniglio/Kelly situation is a concern I am sure the club will work out the best contracts for them and I am sure that as well as the retirements at the end of next season a couple of players will leave and the Kelly thread will reach 500 pages. I hope the club resigns the two of them on long term deals but I feel Kelly will be 2 if he re-signs but I would take that

Hopefully its just a rumour and the cap space we have cleared actually goes towards keeping cogs and kelly. Would be pretty shattering losing them after this offseason.

But sheesh, if they add cogs and tim kelly to their midfield at the end of 2019, they look quite formiddable with shuey, gaff, yeo and redden.

I just don't see how WCE could afford Cogs next year after Gaff and McGov getting new deals. Maybe once a few others finish up but it seems next year doesn't fit.

As am I. I think if that happens we will likely lose a few more than just him.

Look, if the pies can get to the big dance surely we can too with our current list
I'm not happy about him going under any circumstances but we have to expect the WA clubs to target an elite player from WA reaching FA.

You'd think they're more likely to interest him than Vic clubs, but I couldn't see any club hanging up on his manager if he called. He's an important leader but I dont see a vacancy for the captaincy opening up anytime soon. Unless Davis or Ward decide they'd like to step down for any reason.

I expect he'll re-sign, I believe by inference if he didn't go this year he's expected to.

The WA clubs dont seem to ever bid competitively and all the talk is about WC, it could be Freo who make the offer though.

Just watched it on Reddit so no doubt over who it is and just needs to be when it was filmed but no doubt it is curtains for any comeback and I would say probably his time at the club

Thinking about this draft I am comfortable if we try to advance our position or sit where we are as I think something nice could fall to us.

If we were to somehow trade up into the top 5 Rankine or Rozee make the most sense. These are two fast impactful players who can play round 1 next year. It would appear exceedingly unlikely we can do this or outmanoeuvre the Adelaide clubs as they desperately want them. Bailey Smith would be the other guy although he may not be that keen to move.

If we sit where we are Jye Caldwell could be a guy that falls in our lap. Everyone I speak today loves him and reckon if he gets his hamstrings right he is as good as anyone. Off course we have seen guys like Nathan Freeman really struggle and closer to home Jonathon O’Rourke so a lot of research will need to be done but he has good speed and skill and can be a point of difference.

Collier-Dawkins would be a nice replacement for Setterfield. He is tall and has some real tricks but perhaps hasn’t yet found absolute consistency.

I’m really keen on bringing in a young indigenous boy with speed. This hasn’t worked previously on Pickett and Ahern but that was just bad luck. Ian Hill intrigues me as he has traits we don’t have, also for a lower pick maybe Sydney Stack. These guys have magic touch and could compliment our grunt guys.

Going to be an intriguing draft, looking forward to it.

Mate why does the kid need to b indigenous? Why not say a fast player? How does his race come into a selection?

Certainly don’t mean it to be offensive, the two kids of interest to me (Hill and Stack) are indigenous as is Rankine.

That said, and I have to be delicate in this climate (because of responses like yours) the indigenous afl boys often have unique skills, it’s not a knock on non-indigenous players it’s just a fact.

We definitely need speed which is why Bailey Smith and Collier-Dawkins could be good and perhaps not so much Hateley even though he looks a fine player.

We have been made to look one paced by the likes of Collingwood, West Coast and Richmond and just lost two of our speed men in Scully and Shiel. If we don’t address this and ruck position it could be a long year.

I can't say I find it offensive, though I'm not indigenous so that may play a part, but I find it weird to look at a collection of attributes that you feel the list can benefit from and rule out others who may display them because of the colour of their skin.

Ian Hill

Sydney Stack

Stack is not as consistent perhaps but both have the ability to get the ball and distribute at speed and both have breakaway speed. I sometime feel we are a bit vanilla with our squad with the loss of Treloar, WHE and now Shiel taking away our speed.

These blokes are lightly built but have some nice specs to make a difference.

It’s really hard to explain without being seen to generalise and perhaps I am guilty of doing that but there are some intangible things which I feel are unique. Guys like Cyril Rioli, Mick O’Loughlin, Michael Long and many others just had some unique traits.

Apologise if anyone sees that as anything other than an observation and compliment.

I agree with what you are saying in terms of a needs basis. And of course I know no malice was intended.

Speed and a ruck are my identified needs as well. Mumford was potentially a solution but the media reports are concerning and might rule him out if true

Not too sure. It does look to have legs.
He's not currently a listed player, so basically he's an employee who's taken drugs on his holiday.

My guess is the club sticks by him.

I'd actually be less concerned about listing him as a player than retaining him as a coach though.

I'd be a bit concerned about that influence formally on a young Flynn or a Briggs if he's in a position of authority.
