I'd say endurance and speed are his main attributes. I think Freo played him out of position in the past in the back line. This year reminded us he has a good goal sense and a nice kick.
Speed? We can use some of that.

SHANE Mumford could rejoin the GWS Giants as a player without nominating for the national AFL draft later this month.
But Mumford won’t be able to make an immediate impact, with his 2019 comeback reportedly set to be delayed due to a likely two-match suspension over three-year-old footage of him snorting a large quantity of white powder.

Despite an AFL investigation into the widely-circulated footage of Mumford casting doubt on his comeback, the Herald Sun reports that the ruckman is almost certain to resume his career at the Giants in 2019.

And the 32-year-old could join the Giants’ list as a rookie without the risk of rival clubs, who’ve shown interest in Mumford, swooping in the draft due to new AFL list rules.

“After speaking with the AFL, our understanding is that Shane has the ability to walk directly to the club of his choice as of the 1st of December without having to nominate for the draft,” Mumford’s manager Anthony McConville told the Herald Sun.

Most posters thought the club would pick up a DFA and Sheridan will add depth to an area lacking mature bodies and with a good pre season I can see him playing significant game time in 2019, I still see Whitfield, Tomlinson and Kelly as the main wingers in 2019 but another option will be good
With the Sheridan pick up and upgrade for Lloyd it makes 33 on the main list so 5 spots available and 6 on the rookie including Brown meaning 3 spots and 1 likely to be Mumford so an opportunity to pick up a mature player (Townsend) and an Academy prospect, the Swans may pick up Townsend with the pick before in the rookie draft.
I will admit to misunderstanding the rookie rules regarding Sam Reid as I did read in an article which confirms what coniglio_number1 was saying about when a rookie is redrafted the 3 years starts again so he can stay on the rookie list. Confusing for me but not surprising with the way AFL house makes the rules to allow loopholes:p

This confused me but I think I might understand why now. GUMBLETRON on the trades board suggested it might be to do with lifetime free agency.

Armed with the links kindly provided to docs I found a clause to be implemented by now that names two changes.

1. Free agency is defined by service as an AFL player which Mummy meets easily. Rather than service to a particular club which he dies not with 4 years with us, 4 years with the Swans and less with the Cats.

2. Once qualified as a free agent a player remains one permanently.

This seems to mean that Mummy can simply sign with club of choice.

Of course I could be wrong so feel free to critique.

Looking at the list, the best 22 seems strong, but there are many holes in the reserves.

Best 22
Shaw Davis Haynes
Williams Corr Kennedy
Sheridan Hopper Whitfield
De Boer Cameron Langdon
Greene Himmelberg Lloyd
Simpson/Mumford Kelly Coniglio

Tomlinson Ward Taranto Perryman

Reserve
Finlayson Keefe Buntine
... Taylor Cumming
... Bonar Reid
Daniels Sproule ...
... ... D.Buckley
Flynn Shipley ...
J. Buckley Stein Brown ...

In terms of mature players, would like to see Townsend/Bugg picked up to fill a mature body forward pocket/resting mid role. Bugg has the added versatility of playing a tagging role like Reid if we are up against a team that needs a player shut out. Think both still have something to offer.

In the draft, if we can add Duursma, Clarke/Jones/Butters/Stocker/RCD, Hill and Cameron/Stack/McHenry along with Briggs and maybe Walker, I think we will have taken big step to fixing the depth issue.

After watching replays, very keen on Duursma with our first pick and I would see him slot in with Shipley as a rover - has the tenacity, burst acceleration and leadership we would be looking for.

With our second pick, I think there are many players we would be interested in. Clarke looks like a Kade Simpson type player to me and would take the HB role - very reliable by foot without being very fast. Would look to eventually take Shaw's role if Perryman/Cumming dont step up. Butters I feel has the qualities to be a line-breaking HB player and is another I would consider if Clarke were passed on. Can push into the midfield as a wingman too which is a bonus. If Stocker, Jones or RCD were picked, I see them developing as predominant midfielders. Stocker looks like a safe pick - nice acceleration, lack some endurance but is a good kick from both sides. Also mentioned on an interview he wants to be a one club player so sounds like a level-headed guy. Jones is a small body but feel like he has the weapons to play inside/outside. RCD is a big unit with acceleration and great ball use and could wreak havoc with Bonar and Shipley in the NEAFL, but like Bonar will need to work on his tank. Would be a project player at this stage and may need to wait a while before he can debut. High potential but big risk.

I think in terms a silky outside mid, Hill is up there as one of the best in this draft and if still on the board would love to take him with our last 1st round pick. According to Captain in the post above, seems he might be one to fall if he is not invited to the draft. I personally rate him highly and would consider taking him with pick 11 if he has no flight risk and fremantle look to pluck him at 14. Can see one of Jones, Butters, Stocker or RCD falling as well so might still be able to pick one up at pick 19. Hill's recent form may have been down and had a shoulder injury, but his speed and ball use is still sublime and what we need more of. Has the flexibility to play forward and kick goals as well. If Hill can perform at NEAFL level, I dont think his size will be a major detriment to his chances for a debut next year. Also sounds like a quality person - very calm and composed on his Tomorrow Heroes interview.

I think if Briggs has yet to attract a bid, we should make a play for a small forward like Cameron/Stack/McHenry with pick 25. McHenry likely to be taken earlier and Cameron likely to have a bid matched. Cameron would be the ideal pick since he seems to be close with Hill and would be an unpredictable player with X-factor up front. If we can rotate Langdon, Hill, Cameron and Daniels as small forwards into our forward line over the next couple of years together with Jezza, HH and Greene, think it makes for a frightening proposition. Out of the 3 Stack seems most likely. I think he plays mostly midfield but can see him holding down a HF position with frenetic tackling pressure as well as a rotating through the midfield (like DeBoer but with more speed and less endurance).

Briggs would take the temporary full-forward role until at least the General returns from his injury. Depending on list spots available, we may not get to draft Walker.

Would also like to see Kelly resume an inside/outside role where he excelled in 2017.

Fairly expected outcome (perhaps not the specific people, but certainly one rookie upgrade and one DFA). I don't think we'll see anything else happen before draft night; we'll plan to take 5 picks to the ND to fill 5 holes on the list to end up with 38 main list players.

We'll probably keep an ear to the ground on moving earlier in the draft order, but I honestly can't see that happening. Saints and Suns need early picks and massive talent to 'sell' hope to their supporters for next season, and our first pick at 9 is outside the range of the best. Even if someone slid, I can't see Bulldogs or Adelaide really selling to us because they'll want that slider too. But you never know.

So, we should get 3 decent talents with 9, 11 & 19 on draft night. Worst case would be an early bid on Briggs, but I'd think we'd match anything from mid-teens (though I wouldn't expect a bid until 20s at least). Depending on what happens there, the last selection could be interesting. Who we end up with might also throw up a question of whether we grab an extra on the rookie list (to fill a specific perceived need for example). We'll already have 1 more rookie than last year presuming Mummy is picked up, so I can see no-one else being added; although if we've freed up some cash with all the departures, perhaps we'll thrown a Hail Mary out to someone.
